dragonflies

This was already getting bad.

Her first time making a friend here, and already she had messed it up for herself. Every other week, Eliza would mention her parents being proud of her in her daily lunch notes. How was she supposed to know that day would be today? She refused to move as Amelia pointed it out. Amelia's brow furrowed, but she shrugged it off.

"Whatever. Oh, hey, what kind of stuff do you like to do as a pastime?" Amelia asked with a smile. But Sophie knew the subject change was too sudden. She smiled weakly.

'Writing.' she signed with jittery hands. Amelia grinned. "Really? Me too!" She responded happily. Sophie smiled slightly. Looks like Amelia was over it already. That was good. She didn't want that being something Amelia caught onto.

Sophia realized, then, that Amelia was rambling on about writing. She tuned back into the conversation, listening intently.

"...but I never write anything negative, because that makes me feel bad. Especially if I write about other people like that. But fiction is nice, right?" Sophie nodded silently, taking a forkful of her egg salad. Amelia continued to talk, and her voice became melodic and mesmerizing. Very beautiful. It was little things like that that Sophie notice.

She knew now to pay attention to the little things.

Amelia saw how uncomfortable Sophie had suddenly become, and changed the subject. When she mentioned liking writing, she was ecstatic, droning on and on about what she liked to write. Sophie didn't zone out for an instant, and Amelia could tell she was truly being listened to. it was calming, being concentrated on so intently. Amelia had never had this happen before. Why not? She had no idea.

At one point, she mentioned something about dragonflies. Probably about how they can fly upside down, sideways, and backwards. At the mention of the insect, Sophie lit up. She moved the collar of her shirt of her shoulder, and Amelia could see the careful black outline of a dragonfly on her oddly rough, uneven skin. Sophie was beaming.

"Is that real?" Amelia asked, star eyed and in awe. Sophie sheepily shook her head, pulling a black fine-liner from her pocket. Amelia got even closer to her shoulder. And face.

"You did it yourself? That is so cool! She said with extreme passion. Out of nowhere, Sophie looked extremely uncomfortable, breath hitching as she edged away from Amelia. The red-head realized she was too lose to her, and backed away.

"Oh, um sorry." She said, kind of embarrassed as a slight blush covered her cheeks. Sophia smiled kindly, to show she didn't mind too much. But it was obvious she did.

"Well, either way, you tattoo is super cool. Think you could something like that on me?" Amelia asked. Sophie nodded with a smile. This was so fun!
