friends

Hopelessly in love.

Sophie decided, ultimately, that she was hopelessly in love with this freckled, red-headed, bubbly girl. The thought crossed her mind and was easily confirmed while she was drawing a dragonfly identical to her own on Amelia's shoulder, careful not to touch her. Amelia was smiling the whole time, with her adorable, tiny dimples showing.

'Pull yourself together.' she thought as she drew. 'Why would she ever want to date you? She probably doesn't even like girls.'

But she couldn't help it. Every other thought now had the word 'Amelia' somewhere in it. When she had finished the dragonfly, Amelia admired it, hands hovering over it. But even she knew better than to touch wet ink.

Sophie smiled at her work, remembering what Amelia said when she had asked to get the identical dragonfly.

'This way, we'll always, always be friends! No matter what!'

Such an innocent request. But those words burned a hole into her memories. However, the thoughts were shattered as the lunch bell rang, summoning the kids back inside. Amelia pouted, and Sophie was forlorn.

"Oh, well. I'll see you tomorrow, right, Sophie?" Said Amelia, getting up and dusting of her yellow sundress. Sophie nodded, and Amelia smiled happily.

"Great! See you soon!" she chimed, walking in the opposite direction of Sophie's class. Sophie watched her disappear into the sea of teens and children for a moment, before walking absent-mindedly back into the building with her own class. How she would get through the school day, she had no idea.

Amelia admired her dragonfly, as she walked back into the school. How awesome! She was finally friends with Sophie! And she had found out a few more things about Sophie that she could write into her notebook.

1. Sophie loves dragonflies

2. Sophie likes to write

3. Sophie is an amazing artist!

4. Sophie doesn't like being touched

Amelia was simmering in joy when she finally got back to her classroom. She jotted down the entire exchange, recalling any and all memories from what had happened. She carefully avoided anything negative or awkward, and actually got in trouble at one point because of how furiously she was writing, instead of paying attention. She refused to let what had happened fade away, like memories tend to do. And now, of course, she had a job. A quest to fulfill.

To get Sophie to talk to her.
