Ash and Serena have been traveling for almost a week to the city of Sevilla for Serena's next performance, and Ash's next gym battle. As they traveled they couldn't help but admit, they truly appreciated how Palermo worked out Serena's performance schedule as it made thing very easy for them both to work towards their goals together without conflict.
They were currently entering into a small city called Villanueva del Rio-y-Minas, for additional supplies and just rest in a Pokémon Center for a change. So far the biggest issue they had with the Torrent region was its lack of Pokémon Centers. As the looked at the map they had realized that there weren't many Pokémon Centers outside of the cities. Only when the gaps between cities appeared to take more than a week to travel did they have them, and only at the halfway point.
As they walked into the city they noticed a stage near the city center, not too far from the Pokémon Center.
"I wonder what's going on over there?" Ash asked.
"Well let's ask Nurse Joy after we give her our Pokémon to be checked on, I'm sure she knows," Serena replied.
They proceeded into the Pokémon Center and right to Nurse Joy's desk.
"Hello and welcome to the Pokémon Center. How can I help you today," Nurse Joy greeted.
"Hello, we Need our Pokémon checked out and a room for the night," Serena replied.
Nurse Joy placed two trays on the counter and Ash and Serena placed their pokeballs in trays, as Pikachu jumped off of Ash's shoulder, and they also placed the two eggs inside the incubators also on the counter. Nurse Joy handed Ash two keys to their room, then helped Audino put the pokeballs and eggs onto a cart, Pikachu just jumped on all by himself.
"Alright your all set, I'll call for you when they are ready. Is there anything else I can do for you?" Asked Nurse Joy.
"Yes, we were wondering what's going on with the stage and crowd out there?" Asked Ash.
"Oh, that's the annual Tapas competition. The details are on that poster over there," replied Nurse Joy pointing to one of the walls.
Ash and Serena walked over to the poster and began to read it. The poster, as Nurse Joy stated, was for a Tapas competition that was being held that day. It was hosted by a famous chef who owned a restaurant in Sevilla. The winner was to have a Tapas of their own making to be featured in his restaurant during Feria de Abril, a fiesta held in Sevilla in a week. There as also another prize for the winner, a Pokémon egg. A picture of a blue and white Pokémon egg was shown on the poster sitting a silver plater being held by the chef.
"Hey Serena what do you thing? Want to enter?" Ash asked.
"Sure why not, this could be fun," Serena said confidently.
Serena then saw the entry time, specifically when it closed.
"Ahhh, entry closes in thirty minutes," Serena said in a panic.
"Go enter. I'll stay here and get your Pokémon when our names are called," Ash said.
"Thank you," Serena leaned in and gave Ash a quick kiss. "I'll be back as soon as I can," Serena said, then ran out of the Pokémon center.
————————————————————————
Ash waited in the Pokémon Center lobby patiently, although it felt like an eternity to him as it was so boring. Soon his and Serena's names were called. He walked up to the desk to and reattached his pokeballs to his belt and then started to throw Serena's in her backpack that she left, but then he remembered the eggs.
He looked at them as he tried to figure out how to carry them. He looked over at Pikachu, who wasn't much bigger than the eggs, definitely smaller than the incubator, and realized he wasn't going to be any help. Ash then decided there was only one Pokémon who could help right now. Ash grabbed Sylveon's pokeball and released her.
"Hey Sylveon, Serena is entering into a cooking competition. But I could use a hand, or should I say feelers, to carry one of your eggs," Ash explained.
Sylveon smiled and happily extended her feelers to take the egg from Ash's hands. Ash then picked up the other and turned around. When he did that he faced the exit and saw a trainer walking in. They both froze in place as their eyes locked. A smirk formed on both of their faces, as they both knew what was going to happen next.
———————————————————————
Serena from the Pokémon center and got in line to register for the contest. Luckily there was still a line, and it was short, but not moving very quickly. Serena waited patiently for her turn to register until she heard her name.
"Hey Serena," said feminine voice from behind Serena.
"Ahh!" Serena said surprised as she jumped up and spun around.
"Miette?!" Serena said in shock upon seeing her old rival.
"Hey there Serena, fancy running into you here. Are you by yourself, or did you bring a certain someone from Kanto with you?" Miette asked in a teasing manner.
"How did you know I went to Kanto?" Serena asked.
"When Shauna and I accepted Palermo's deal to come out here we asked her assistant why you weren't there and she let it slip you were there. So is Ash here? I'd just love to tell him how I feel," Miette replied using a teasing tone at the end.
Serena stood tall and confidently as she knew she had nothing to fear.
"Actually yes he is, he's at the Pokémon Center waiting on our Pokémon. And for your information, he's no longer available. We're dating now," Serena replied.
"Well it's about time! That whole shy girl thing was getting old fast. I was actually considering telling Ash for you," Miette replies sounding relieved.
"Wait, I thought you had a crush on Ash?" Serena asked.
"I did at first. But then after I saw how dense he was when he missed all the obvious hint you left him, and let's not forget the dance party. My feet and head are hurting just thinking about it. Anyway, I realized he wasn't not worth me pursuing. I just kept teasing you to try and get you to confess to him," Miette replied.
"Well that's a relief," Serena sighed.
"Besides, I've got my own man now," Miette added.
"Congratulations," Serena said as she gave Miette a little hug.
"Thanks, his name is Paul and I met him here in Torrent. But before I talk about my man tell me about yours. So, did you two do it yet?" Miette teased again.
"Miette!" Serena yelled as she blushed a bright red.
"I take that as a no, kind of surprising though. I would have figured you would have just thrown yourself at him," Miette concluded.
"Well what about you and Paul, have you?" Serena asked, ignoring most of Miette's last statement while sounding a little uncomfortable at the end.
"Not yet. Don't get me wrong, I want to. But I'm not putting out until after another date or two. He decided to finally officially ask me out on a date about a week ago. It was nice and so was he, but I want to make sure he's not just trying to sleep with me first," Miette replied.
The girls both registered for the competition and then started walking together to the Pokémon center.
"You know I'm actually happy I ran into you," Serena commented.
"Same here. You know Paul's a really strong trainer, I bet him and Ash could have a battle and just hang out while we're competing," Miette added.
"That would be great. I was actually feeling a little bad leaving Ash alone with nothing to do. Ash is so friendly with people I'm sure they'll become great friends in no time," Serena replies.
Miette and Serena walked into the Pokémon Center and began to look around.
"Where's Ash?" Serena thought out loud.
"And Paul, I don't see them anywhere," Miette added.
"Hurry up, they're both down to there last Pokémon," a trainer yelled to another trainer.
Serena and Miette followed the voice to see it belonging to another trainer at the door that lead to the battlefields. Serena and Miette looked at each other, both with the same thought.
"You don't think," Miette started.
"I think so. Come on let's check it out," Serena said.
The two girls walked outside where there was a crowd surrounding the battlefield, or at least what was left of it. The battle field was severely broken apart with many craters. On the trainer sides of the battlefield was Ash and Paul, with Riolu and Larvesta in the middle of the very badly damaged battlefield.
"Riolu brick break!"
Riolu started charging at Larvesta with his right hand glowing white.
"Use string shot to protect yourself," Paul commanded.
Larvesta quickly started shooting the white string from its mouth up into the air. The string started to cover Larvesta appearing to be a cocoon. Riolu brought his right hand down in a chopping form and hit the cocoon, but instead bounced off causing Riolu to stumble back as he lost his footing.
"Now use flamethrower to propel yourself into the air, then use it on Riolu," said Paul.
The string shot cocoon burst into flames with explosive force, causing Riolu to fall on his back as Larvesta shot up into the air. Flames were shooting out of Larvesta's five horns, keeping it up in the air as it lined up its shot. A red-yellow flame then shoots from its mouth and hits Riolu, who cries out in pain. Riolu jumps back, out of the flame, his body smoking from the flames.
"Are you alright," Ash asked Riolu, who nods that he is.
"Larvesta flame wheel!"
Larvesta starts spinning as flames start shooting out of its horns. It then hits the ground in the form of a wheel and starts spinning towards Riolu.
"Riolu dodge with Agility!"
Riolu starts running and disappears just as Larvesta is about to hit.
"Now hit it with aura sphere!"
This command caught everyone by surprise as they thought Ash was crazy, but Paul knew better and was only surprised Ash hand a Riolu that was able to learn that move. They all soon joined Paul as they were even more surprised when they saw Riolu put both hands together and form the blue sphere. Riolu fired the aura sphere at Larvesta causing an explosion sending it flying, however the flame wheel provided some protection as the fire and bug type landed on his feet ready to continue.
"Riolu it's time to end this and test out your Z move."
Riolu nodded and joined Ash in performing the synchronized moves. Paul, having heard of Z moves, was curious to see its power but also knew he had to act quickly if he was to have any chance of beating Ash.
"Quick use flare blitz to dodge and attack!"
Flames fired out of Larvesta's horns and it became engulfed in red-yellow flames, then fires its self at Riolu. At the same time Riolu throws punch after punch, each sending an orange fist shaped energy at Larvesta. As Larvesta charges at Riolu he is dodging the attacks, resulting in them causing heavy damage to the already rough looking battlefield. However as it is beginning to look like Larvesta is going to be able to hit Riolu, it's left side is clipped by one orange fists, causing it to slow down enough that it is unable to dodge the next fist. Larvesta is slammed into the battlefield, and as the dust clears Larvesta is seen with swirly eyes.
"Larvesta is unable to battle, the winner is Ash Ketchum," announced another trainer who was acting as the referee.
Almost everyone is in a silent state of shock as they see the battlefield. Many of these trainers had seen some pretty badly damaged battlefields before, some had even caused it themselves, but they knew it could be repaired. This battlefield however wasn't badly damaged, it was destroyed, leaving it questionable whether it could even be repaired or a new battlefield was going to need to be made.
Ash walked up to Riolu, who was breathing very heavily, and patted him on the head.
"You did great out there," Ash praised.
"Thank you master, but I am feeling extremely tired from using the Z move," Riolu said in Pokémon speech.
"Well that was the first time you've used a Z move in a battle. It's going to take some more practice for you to get more used to using those. But don't worry too much about that, all of my Pokémon felt the same after the first time using a Z move, they take a lot out of you. Also, how many more times do I need to tell you to stop calling me Master?" said Ash.
Riolu looked up to Ash and smirked. "At least one more time Master."
Ash sighed as he smiled and shook his head, as he returned Riolu to his pokeball.
"You just weren't fast enough. Well work on your speed next training," Paul said to Larvesta as he returned it to its pokeball.
Ash heard this and smiled. "Atleast he's not calling it pathetic," Ash thought to himself.
Ash turned to walk off of the battlefield, as it was too broken to walk across, and saw Serena and Miette. As Ash walked over he saw Miette walking over to Paul.
As he arrived at Serena he leaned in and gave her a kiss.
"Congratulations on your win," Serena commented as they broke the kiss.
"Thanks. Oh and incase you were wondering, I put our stuff in our room. And Sylveon is there too with the eggs and your other Pokémon," Ash replied. He then looked over to see Paul with an arm around Miette's shoulder as they walked over.
"Ash, Serena, I'd like to introduce you to my boyfriend, Paul Shiji. Paul, Serena is my biggest rival to become Kalos Queen, and Ash is her boyfriend," Miette introduced.
"It's nice to meet you Paul," Serena said as she extended her hand.
"Same," Paul replied as he shook her hand.
"I guess it was pointless to introduce you two," Miette commented after Paul shook Serena's hand.
"Yeah, we've meet," Ash replied.
"That was a good battle, you caught me off guard with that aura sphere. But next time bring out some of your older Pokémon like Infernape, my older Pokémon could use a challenge too," Paul commented.
"Wait? How do you know about Ash's older Pokémon?" Serena asked Ash and Paul.
"Like I said, Paul and I have met. We met in Sinnoh a couple of years ago," Ash replied.
"Well that's great, your already friends," Miette commented.
"I wouldn't go that far," Ash replied.
"Miette, Ash is the trainer I told you about with the opposite philosophy," Paul explained to Miette.
"We weren't friendly rivals in Sinnoh," Ash explained to Serena.
"Well, will you two be able to be civil together while Serena and I compete in this cooking competition?" Asked Miette.
"I think we can manage that much. What do you think Paul?" Ash replied.
"We'll manage," Paul replied.
"Good, and don't just battle the whole time. I have a feeling Nurse Joy isn't going to be very happy when she sees this, and will be even less happy if you two destroy another battlefield," Serena added.
Both Ash and Paul look back at the battlefield and shrugged.
————————————————————————
A little while later, after Ash and Paul were banned from using the remaining battlefields by Nurse Joy, Serena and Miette we're standing on stage. There were over a dozen participants, and all of them looked serious about winning
"Hello ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this years Tapas competition. I am your host and Mayor, Mario Lopez," a young man said into a microphone. "Now this is how this competition will work, in the first round you will be recreating one of Chef Antonio's Tapas recipes. The recipes were randomly selected and are already at the work station in the black envelopes. The three chefs who do the best at recreating the Tapas will move on to the final round, where they shall create a Tapa of their own creation. These will be judged by Chef Antonio himself, and the winner will not only have their Tapa featured at his restaurant, but they will also receive this Pokémon egg," said the mayor as he gestured to Chef Antonio, a tall, middle aged man, with long black hair held up in a ponyta tail, and was holding up the blue and white Pokémon egg in an incubator.
"The rules will be simple. You will have thirty minutes to complete the first round, and will be allowed to use up to thee Pokémon to assist you. Behind you is a fully stocked pantry for you to use for your ingredients. You may only use the ingredients and cookware from here, and are not allowed to use anything we did not provide. There will then be a fifteen minute break as your Tapas are judged on appearance and accuracy to the original. Those lucky three that make it to the final round will then be forty-five minutes with the same rules. Now participants, you have a minute to make your Pokémon selections," explained the host.
Several of the participants looked deep in thought as they selected the Pokémon they were going to use, as for others it was easy. For Miette and Serena it was easy as they cooked regularly with several Pokémon. Serena proceeded to release Pancham, Braixen, and Sylveon, as Miette released Slurpuff, Meowstic, and Scizor. Scizor had a serious and unenthusiastic look on his face as Miette explained the situation to them.
"Hey Miette, when did you catch a Scizor?" Serena asked.
"About two days after I arrived, he was a really tough capture. He kind of forced my Pokémon and I into battling him," Miette replied.
"He doesn't exactly look thrilled to be doing this," Serena observed.
"He really likes battling and not really much else. But we do have an understanding, as long as he continues to work with my Pokémon on performances and any other competitions like this, I will battle with him against other trainers," Miette replied.
"Wait you battle now?" Serena asked sounding surprised.
"Paul's been teaching me. He's part of the reason I was able to capture Scizor, by teaching me a little about battling while at a disadvantage with my Pokémon. We usually try to battle at the Pokémon Centers and if we run into any trainers on our travels, but usually it's against Paul and his Pokémon," Miette explains. Then a look of realization appears on Miette's face, "Hey do you think Ash would battle us? Since Ash is on the same level as Paul I'm sure he would provide a great challenge for Scizor, and it would really help me become a better trainer for Scizor."
Upon hearing this Scizor immediately became interested and was looking at Serena as he awaited her answer.
"Are you kidding? This is Ash, of course he'll battle you two. However you'll have to take it out of town since he's been banned from using the Pokémon center battlefields," Serena replied.
She then noticed a confused look on Scizor's face, realizing what it was about she explained to Scizor why Ash was banned from the battlefields. A smile then formed upon his face at thought of battling a new powerful trainer.
"Great, now Scizor you'll have to wait till after this competition is through. It will probably be closer to dinner, so be patient," Miette instructed.
Scizor nodded accepting these terms, as he now looked more determined and excited to complete this competition.
The timer started and the trainers and Pokémon were off. For Miette Slurpuff was picking out all the best ingredients, while Meowstic was using psychic to carry them all. Back at their station Scizor made quick work of cutting up the ingredients that needed cutting.
Serena and her Pokémon were dashing around like a well oiled machine. As Serena went over the ingredients list all three Pokémon were working together to find and grab the ingredients. Then back at their station they immediately got to work. They were used to cooking together from their time in Hoenn when they had to prepare meals. They all had their roles and knew exactly what to do.
————————————————————————
Ash and Paul were sitting at a bar that was near the stage, and had outdoor seating so they could hear if there was an announcement. They were sitting at a table with the two Pokémon eggs sitting on top. Paul had been volunteered by Miette to help Ash watch over one of the eggs, Ash wasn't crazy about the idea, but did appreciate the help. They just sat at the table in an uncomfortable silence as they both nursed their beers.
"So, What have you been up to since Sinnoh," Ash asked, trying to break the silence.
"Training," Paul replied shortly.
"Figures. You know Dawn was looking for you, did you two ever run into each other?" Ash asked.
"Yes, but it didn't last long. She was still wanting to be a top Coordinator like her mom, and I just wanted to be alone to train. I wasn't wanting to date like she was, I had other priorities," Paul replied.
"Like what?" Ash asked.
"It doesn't concern you," Paul replied coldly.
"Fine, I'm just trying to make some small talk. But I will say I was surprised by how you spoke to Larvesta. I expected you to call it worthless or pathetic after it lost," said Ash.
"I told it where it fell short and how we were going to work on that. The rest is unnecessary," said Paul.
"Well there is something we can agree on. I'm just surprised from the last time we met," said Ash.
"After seeing how well you did with Infernape made me start questioning my ideology. I've come to regret abandoning the Pokémon I did, and also decided fear wasn't a good training tactic. Since I've changed my training and how I've treated my Pokémon, I've seen them progress better, and have even seen them push harder in battles where they were running on pure adrenaline just to win. I still don't fully understand, but since I've started training them better they seem to want to try harder. The only pathetic Pokémon now are those that don't put their best effort forward," explained Paul.
Ash smiled, despite Paul seeming to be as cold as ever, he was happy that he seems to be changing for the better.
————————————————————————
The girls finished as a buzzer went off.
"Alright everyone, please pick up your Tapas and place then on the table behind me by your corresponding number," said the host.
All the participants walked off the stage and started to spread out in front of the stage, some with their Pokémon still out, and others returning them. Serena and Miette has theirs out as they looked for Ash and Paul, when they heard a familiar voice.
"PIKA PI!" Pikachu called out to get their attention.
They all looked and saw Pikachu weaving between and around people's legs. Quickly he arrived at the group and nuzzles with Sylveon.
"Hey Pikachu, did Ash send you to lead us to them?" Serena asked.
"Pika," Pikachu replied with a nod.
Pikachu then got up onto Serena's shoulder and pointed in the direction of Ash and Paul. The girls and their Pokémon arrived and joined Ash and Paul at the table. Sylveon quickly checked on her eggs, not that she didn't trust Ash and Paul, she just felt a special attachment, that she couldn't explain, to her first two eggs. They knew it wasn't going to take long before the competition was going to resume, so Miette and Serena just ate some food from Ash and Paul's plates that was already there. As the two girls ate and drank water they tried to come up with ideas for Tapas that would impress the chef. Also while they sat there Ash noticed Scizor staring at him intensely.
"Umm, Miette. Why is your Scizor looking at me like that?" Ash asked.
"Oh yeah, we promised Scizor that you would have a battle with him later so he would continue to listen to Miette," Serena replied.
Ash look back at Scizor as a smile formed on his face. "I look forward to it."
A smirk then formed on Scizor's face upon hearing Ash's words.
"Attention las senoras and los caballeros (ladies and gentlemen) the three finalists have been decided," The mayor announced over a loud speaker.
Just about everyone stopped what they were doing as they gave the mayor their undivided attention.
"The three finalists are, Gabriela Mendez, Miette Feui, and Serena Yvonne," announced the mayor.
The people applauded, Ash gave Serena a congratulatory hug, as Miette lunged at Paul in excitement and hugged him, and he returned the hug.
"If our three finalist would please join us back on the stage, we will begin the final round in just a few minutes," the mayor finished.
Quickly all three girls and their Pokémon were standing on the stage, ready for the competition to continue.
"Alright las senoras, this is the final leg of this competition. Your goal is to create a Tapa impress Chef Antonio. The pantry has been restocked with everything you could need. You have forty-five minutes, and the time starts now," said the mayor.
The girls took off and got straight to work. The girls and their Pokémon all worked quickly and effectively towards completing their dishes, little communication needed from the trainers, as at this point they all had to know their roles.
Ash and Paul joined the crowd that was building in front of the stage. The crowd grew larger and larger as the end closed in. As the timer reached the last minute all three finalists were platting their dishes.
"Alright everyone with me," said the mayor as they reached the final ten seconds.
"Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one," The crowd counted.
As the crowd said one the girls backed away as a buzzer also went off. Chef Antonio then stepped onto the stage and began evaluating each of the dishes, starting with Gabriela.
"Presentation is good, nice flavors, but it didn't seem unique to me, like I've had something similar before," Chef Antonio said, then walked to Miette.
"The only negative I have is that this is way too sweet. Almost desert level of sweetness. However I will say if this competition was for deserts you would definitely be a contender for winning," Chef Antonio walked off.
Miette wasn't happy about what he said, but couldn't really argue since she was aiming for sweet, it just appeared she didn't hit at his tastes.
He then arrived at Serena's station. He looked down at her dish and raised an eyebrow, then began to closely examine Serena's dish with his eyes and nose. He then tore off a piece of the bread, dipped it and ate it, then he looked at Serena.
"Where did you get this idea?" Chef Antonio asked.
"Well since coming to Torrent I've tried a lot of Tapas with my boyfriend, and I just came up with one inspired by Kalosian food," Serena replied.
Chef Antonio didn't show much acknowledgment, and just nodded, then grabbed another sample as he turned around and walked away. He then walked over to the mayor and took the microphone.
"All three of these tapas were very well done. But after careful consideration I have chosen the winner that truly stood out the most. Serena Yvonne!" Chef Antonio announced.
Serena gasped and went down to her knees as she hugged her Pokémon, as she knew she wouldn't have been able to win without them. Serena stood back up to see Miette and her Pokémon standing facing them.
"Well it's looks like you beat me this time, Congratulations," Miette said extending her hand.
"Thanks," Serena replied as she took Miette's hand and shook it.
The hand shake quickly turned into a hug. However the hug was made quick by the sound of Chef Antonio clearing his throat.
"Señorita Yvonne, I would like to present to you your prize money, and your Pokémon egg," Chef Antonio said as he handed Serena an envelope and the blue and white Pokémon egg.
"Thank you very much," Serena said as she put the envelope in her pocket and took the Pokémon egg.
"Wow, I wonder what Pokémon is in it," Miette commented.
As if on cue the egg began to shake and crack. Acting quickly, Chef Antonio removed the lid to incubator, then Miette took the incubator and held it so Serena could hold pull the egg out. The egg continued to shake and crack in Serena's hands, and then pieces started to fall to the floor. The crowd remained, watching excitedly to see what hatched out. Soon the top of the egg was cracked free and the new Pokémon was trying to push it off, but was having difficulty. Serena readjusted her hold on the egg to hold it in one of her arms, as she used her free hand to remove the top of the egg. Serena looked down into the egg to see a little blue face with a beak looking up at her.
"Hello there, my name is Serena," Serena said in a sweet voice.
The Pokémon found Serena's voice lovely and soothing, it wanted to go to her. It stuck it's cloud like wings out of the top of the egg and pulled herself up a little. As it's body began to poke itself out it pushed itself off towards Serena. The little blue and white Pokémon landed on Serena's chest, but began to slide down. Serena dropped the egg and caught her, then brought her up in front of her face.
"You are such a cutie," Serena said to the little Pokémon.
"Swa," the little Pokémon said happily and jumped at Serena's face and hugged her.
"Awe," was heard from everyone in the crowd.
The Pokémon turned around to see all the people and became scared. She then dropped down and was caught by Serena, then jumped off her hands and to her shoulder then buried its face in Serena's neck.
Soon after getting off the stage Serena used her Pokédex to identify the Pokémon as a Swablu. Back at the Pokémon center Ash and Serena decided it was a good time to introduce Swablu to their Pokémon, after Serena officially captured it.
"Alright everyone, come on out," Ash and Serena said as they released all of the Pokémon they had with them.
Despite getting over the initial scare of the large crowd of people, Swablu was being a bit nervous and was remaining perched on top of Serena's head and right now Serena could feel Swablu shaking.
"It's ok Swablu, they are all part of your family," Serena said as she carefully lifted Swablu off of her head.
"Hello," Swablu said nervously in Pokémon speech.
The Pokémon then proceeded to introduce themselves to the newly hatched member of their family.
