"Pikachu is unable to battle. Eevee is the winner," Serena announced as she was acting as the referee.
Ash and Serena were currently at the Pokémon Center in the town of Huesca. They arrived late last night, so they had no idea that a certain fan of Ash's was there until this morning when they came to the battlefield to train. As Ash and his Pokémon were doing their warmup, Yuuka Shinx, the super fan of Ash's they met the same day Ash earned his Balance badge from the twins, came out for her training as well. This ultimately led to her challenging Ash to a three on three battle for training. Yuuka's hope was that battling against her idol would help her improve significantly, so she also asked if Ash could give her some tips when they were done.
This first round was between Ash's Eevee and Yuuka's Pikachu, where Eevee narrowly won. Yuuka returned her Pikachu and thanked her, then waited on Ash to see if he was going to change Pokémon.
Ash looked at Eevee. He was breathing heavily and was probably too tired to be able to win another battle. "Eevee return," Ash called out, not willing to make him get hurt in a battle he was probably not going to be able to win. Ash raised the Pokéball and fired the red beam to return Eevee to his Pokéball, but Eevee jumped to the side to dodge it. "Eevee," Ash groaned.
Ever since Eevee was knocked out in his debut gym battle, he had been training relentlessly. At first Ash and Pikachu were ok with this, as they had feared his battling spirit was damaged by the loss and he would become depressed. However they quickly realized Eevee took the training to get stronger route to a new extreme. He stopped playing with the other Pokémon and would only train. At first the older Pokémon indulged in this behavior, however they quickly saw this reach unhealthy levels.
Truth be told, he was depressed. His loss left him disappointed in himself and felt Ash and Pikachu probably felt the same. He never wanted to lose again, so he trained harder and battled more, even if it meant on his own. They learned that Eevee was leaving in the middle of the night and challenging wild Pokémon to battles. He started out against clearly weaker Pokémon, but soon bit off more than he could handle in the form of an Ursaring. Eevee was beaten up badly, and probably would have been killed by the Ursaring, if not for his uncle Fearow intervening with a Throat Chop to Ursaring. Ursaring stumbled back as Fearow quickly snatched Eevee up in his talons and flew back to camp. Eevee's injuries were far too severe that he couldn't play the situation down, so when they landed, Fearow woke Ash and Pikachu up, and explained everything he had seen.
Ash and Pikachu were left worried, while Pikachu was also upset at his son's behavior. Pikachu grounded him to his Pokéball at night, and told him he would dish out more punishment in the morning. Pikachu's additional punishment was actually a lecture about being patient and that his strength would come in time.
————————————————————————
"Eevee, you battled great. But you need to return for now to rest," Ash told Eevee.
"There's no shame in resting after a hard fought battle. You've clearly improved, but it's important not to overdo it," Pikachu yelled to his son.
Eevee nodded his head then hung it in embarrassment at his behavior. He promised his father he would behave better, and here he was not listening to his trainer. Ash returned Eevee to his Pokéball without further issue, then grabbed his next Pokéball.
"Ignychus, I choose you!" Ash called out as he released the prehistoric Pokémon. Ignychus took the field and stretched his body as he yawned. Ash was a little disappointed in himself when it came to Ignychus, as he had barely battled with him. He had been around plenty and had gotten plenty of training, but for some reason he never battled with him, which was something he wanted to change.
Yuuka scanned Ignychus with her Pokédex to know what she was up against, then grabbed her next Pokéball. "Alright then, in that case, Ivysaur go!" Yuuka called out.
As the grass type took the field Ash looked at Yuuka with a questioning look, which she caught.
"Well," Yuuka started as she looked nervous and began to fidget in place. "I've seen you battle with type disadvantages plenty of times and win, so I figured I'd give it a shot."
Ash chuckled a little as he scratched the back of his head. Memories of every time he battled with a type disadvantage, both good and bad, flashed through his mind. "Ok, but here's a tip. When choosing to battle with a type disadvantage, you should probably only do it if you have a speed advantage so you can minimize your damage," Ash advised.
"Yeeeaah," Yuuka said as she understood Ash's point. "But, Ivysaur here can take some pretty serious damage. So he should be able to endure."
Ash just shrugged. "It's all on how you battle."
"Battle resume," Serena called out.
"Ivysaur, razor leaf and leech seed!"
"Ignychus, dodge with dig."
Multiple leaves fired from the leaves on Ivysaur's back as several seeds were launched into the air from the flower bulb. As this happened, Ignychus started digging into the ground with his claws. The leaves flew right over Ignychus, narrowly missing his tail, and he was completely underground by the time the leech seeds hit and sprouted.
"Now I have you!" Yuuka announced confidently. "Ivysaur fill the hole with sleep powder!"
Ivysaur jumped into the air and landed by the hole, as the sparkly blue powder left his back and went into the hole.
"Ignychus, get rid of the sleep powder with fire spin!"
Within seconds a tornado of fire shot out of the hole, burning up the sleep powder, and as it exited the hole, the flames expanded, hitting Ivysaur and causing him to become burned.
"Now, slash followed by iron tail!" Ash yelled.
Ignychus burst out of the hole with his sickle shaped claws and tail glowing white. As he came down, he slashed both of his claws across Ivysaur's face, causing the grass type to cry out in pain. However Ignychus wasn't done yet. As his feet hit the ground, he spun around, hitting Ivysaur with iron tail and sending him flying through the air before landing in front of Yuuka. True to what Yuuka said, Ivysaur started to push himself up, showing he could take a beating.
While this was happening, Ignychus was jumping back and forth from one leg to another out of pure excitement to battle. Suddenly he stopped and began glowing white. His overall body grew larger, and when the glowing subsided the rest of his newly evolved features could be seen. The orange marks that were once at the top of his eyes were now at the bottom and wrapped around to an orange streak that started at the top of his head and ended at the tip of his tail, replacing the dark brown stripes. His face lost its cute features as a ridge formed above each eye, narrowing them, and making him overall look more aggressive.
Yuuka scanned him to learn that this newly evolved Pokémon was called Incineraptor. Meanwhile Incineraptor was looking around at his surroundings, then stopped as he looked at Ivysaur. He lowered his body as if he was about to take off running towards him, as his right sickle claw began tapping on the ground. Nobody could explain it, but there was something about that simple noise that just felt ominous as it sent chills down everyone's spine.
"Incineraptor, congratulations on your evolution. Are you ready to continue our battle?" Ash asked as he remembered what he had learned about this Pokémon after it evolved. Incineraptor just ignored Ash as he continued to stare down his opponent as if he was looking at his next meal. Upon Incineraptor not listening to him Ash decided to see his aura to gauge his response, and saw that it looked more feral than even wild Pokémon. Slowly he reached to his belt and pulled two Pokéballs, seeing this Serena did the same.
"Yuuka, do you have any Pokémon that are either stronger or have a type advantage?" Ash called out calmly as he watched the prehistoric carnivore.
"Yes, why?" Yuuka asked in a concerned tone as she reached for her Pokéballs. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew Ash was concerned about something, which was enough for her to worry as well.
Ash didn't respond as he released both Greninja and Lucario, while Serena released Milotic and Meloetta. Incineraptor stopped the tapping of its claw and looked to the side at Serena and her Pokémon, then behind him at Ash and his. Yuuka then released a Charizard and her Wartortle, bringing his attention back to her.
"Incineraptor!" Ash called out in an effort to keep the attention on him. Ash's eyes then glowed blue as he tried to reach out to him, resulting in Incineraptor's eyes glowing blue. Incineraptor began to flail around as he felt the presence in his mind and it scared him.
Ash dug down deep as he tried to understand what was going on. It didn't take Ash long to realize the problem that so many others didn't. The scientists theory about the behavior modifications not holding was correct, as Ash could see Incineraptor's primal instincts and aggression had taken hold. However he also found more, Incineraptor's in prehistoric times were pack Pokémon with a leader, or alpha. Now that Incineraptor was evolved, he by instinct, was looking for his pack. But with no other Incineraptors around, he formed his own pack, and saw himself as an alpha. Now Ash understood why this Pokémon was known to sometimes kill its trainer, being the trainer they no doubt saw themselves as what Incineraptor would consider the alpha. The problem with this was that Incineraptor would see a trainer as an outsider and would defend its position as alpha through battle, which no trainer could survive alone.
Ash knew now what he had to do to keep Incineraptor's loyalty. He had to earn the title of alpha in Incineraptor's eyes.
Ash broke the aura connection with Incineraptor, and proceeded to walk towards him. "Incineraptor, we're a team, a family. I understand how you see things now that you've evolved, and I don't want to fight you, but..." Ash started to say, but now that Incineraptor's mind was free, he wanted to keep it that way. Incineraptor gave a low growl as he showed his teeth, then with a high pitched roar he took off running in the only direction no one was standing.
"Incineraptor!" Ash yelled.
Incineraptor ran as fast as he could to the fence that was around the battlefields and jumped over, landing on the sidewalk. He made another high pitched roar, resulting in several people screaming before he ran off.
"Serena, Yuuka, stay here!" Ash yelled as he took off running after Incineraptor, with Pikachu riding on his shoulder as Lucario and Greninja followed behind.
"Ash!" Serena cried out as she ran after him.
"No, I need to do this myself!" Ash yelled back as he turned his head to face her.
Serena stopped and watched as he ran out of sight.
————————————————————————
Incineraptor ran down the streets, jumping onto cars that got into his way and attacked them, as he saw them as challengers. Several trainers tried to stand up to him, sending out their Pokémon to battle him and stop his rampage. However this proved to be an exercise in futility as Incineraptor would take his first opportunity to go for a kill, resulting in the trainers to return their Pokémon and run before it was too late.
These constant battles however were taking a toll on Incineraptor, leaving him feeling weaker and hungry. Incineraptor looked around as he smelled the air and could see plenty of prey around him, both human and Pokémon alike, all trying to keep their distance. He decided on a rather plump man hiding behind a car with his Aipom, seeing as the man himself would be a feast that would restore his strength.
Slowly Incineraptor began to stalk his prey as he tapped his sickle like claws on the ground. He jumped onto the car the man was hiding behind and stared down at him, the man screaming in fear as looked upon the terrifying Pokémon above him. Incineraptor was about to jump down and eat his fill, when a new, more delicious smell filled his nose.
The hungry Pokémon began sniffing the air as he tried to pinpoint the source of the smell. He jumped off the car and began walking away from his former meal plan as he now followed his nose. He soon arrived at a restaurant with outdoor seating, and was full of people eating.
Incineraptor charged the seating area and began devouring the meals. People screamed, and yelled at the Pokémon as he ate their food, but backed away as her gave a deadly stare and growled. Incineraptor feasted on grilled slowpoke tail, mankey ham, and brazed magikarp.
Everyone was too afraid to do anything, except one man, who had wavy black hair and was wearing a black leather jacket. Damion watched the Pokémon casually as he continued to eat his meal and sized up the Pokémon. He had to admit Incineraptor did appear to be strong, but he knew he wouldn't use him since he couldn't mega evolve. Meaning if he was his, he would only be used for training his Pokémon. The man finished his meal and stood up as he pulled a Pokéball from his belt.
"Swampert, time for battle," Damion called out as he threw the Pokéball into the air. Swampert emerged from his Pokéball, knocking aside several tables in the process. "Now Swampert, mega evolve!"
Incineraptor stopped eating and looked over at the newly evolved mega Swampert, then took a battle stance as he saw him as a challenger to his position as Alpha.
"Hydro pump," Damion commanded.
Swampert opened his mouth and unleashed a powerful jet of water. Incineraptor jumped to the side and fired a wide flamethrower at both Swampert and Damion. Swampert moved in front of Damion, taking the full force of the attack.
"Hydro pump again!"
While still taking the flamethrower, Swampert opened his mouth and fired another jet of water. The hydro pump cut through the flamethrower and hit Incineraptor, causing him to end the flamethrower as he was pushed into a parked car then held there by the powerful blast. When the hydro pump stopped, Incineraptor fell to the ground and began coughing up water.
"Finish him with hammer arm!"
Swampert's right forearm glowed white as he charged in as Incineraptor was trying to get up, and slammed it into him, sending the rock and fire type tumbling over the car and into the street. Incineraptor laid there in the street with his eyes open, the only movement was from his breathing. Damion walked up to his Swampert and looked over at Incineraptor with disgust.
"I told you to finish him. Don't make me repeat myself," Damion said to Swampert with an irritated tone.
Swampert nodded and began walking to Incineraptor, this time with both forearms glowing white. He raised both arms above his head and began to bring them down. As he did two figures dashed in and blocked the two hammer arms. Those two figures were Lucario using a bone staff made of aura, and Greninja in his Ash-Greninja form using the large water shuriken from his back.
"Incineraptor!" Ash called out as he ran up behind him. Ash went down to his knees by Incineraptor's head as he examined his injuries, as Pikachu jumped off Ash's shoulder and ran up behind Greninja and Lucario, ready to get involved if needed. He could tell that Incineraptor was badly hurt, but before he could worry about the cause, he had to heal his Pokémon.
"Don't worry Incineraptor, you'll be good as new in no time," Ash said as put one of his hands on Incineraptor's head and the other on his chest. His eyes then glowed blue as he began the healing.
At first Incineraptor was annoyed by Ash, as he still saw him as someone not worthy of being his alpha as he was too kind. However, as soon as Ash began healing him, his opinion began to change. Since Ash was still learning how to use his aura properly, he couldn't help also opening his mind to Incineraptor as he healed him. In this brief period, Incineraptor could see who Ash truly was, he took on the pain of others, putting others before himself, protecting complete strangers because it was right. Incineraptor could see now that Ash truly wasn't an alpha and never could be, he was something greater, he was a hero.
As all this was happening Damion watched becoming more and more angered by Ash's interference. To him Ash represented a potential problem to his mega evolution bracelet, in showing mega evolution wasn't a necessity to win a battle. Then adding in Greninja and the bond phenomenon, which has been driving researchers and breeders crazy to understand and duplicate, represented an alternative to mega evolution that could overshadow the bracelet when it goes on the market. In the end he had to prove his superiority over Ash, or ensure he doesn't make it to the Torrent League.
"Swampert, end this stalemate by using superpower to get rid of those Pokémon, then hammer arm again to finish what you started. If the trainer gets in the way, so be it." Damion called out.
Swampert quickly broke the stalemate with Greninja and Lucario causing them both to lose their balance for a moment. He then flexed his muscles as he was outlined with a blue aura. He then slammed both of his fists onto the Pokémon sending them flying past Ash and into the building across the street, then followed up with the same for Pikachu.
Ash looked back while still healing Incineraptor to see the three Pokémon hit the ground after falling from the wall. He then looked forward again to see Swampert preparing to use hammer arm again. Ash focused and hastily formed an aura barrier resembling a dome around him and Incineraptor as he continued to heal his Pokémon. Swampert brought both arms down and slammed into the barrier, causing it to shatter as his arms bounced back off and he stumbled backwards.
"Protect," Damion groaned with annoyance, thinking the barrier came from Incineraptor.
The force of the attack and strain of trying to maintain the barrier while healing Incineraptor was too much for Ash, causing him to collapse. Ash was laying on top of Incineraptor with a dizzy feeling, as Swampert prepared for another set of hammer arms. Both Greninja and Lucario saw this and began scrambling to their feet as Swampert started to bring his arms down to strike.
As this was happening someone else was seeing what was happening, Incineraptor. Incineraptor saw the arms coming down and knew that since Ash was on top of him he wouldn't survive when the attack connected. Incineraptor could feel that thanks to Ash, most of his strength had been restored, and he knew exactly how to use it. Incineraptor opened his mouth and quickly built up a purple ball of energy in his mouth and fired it right at Swampert's face. The dragon rage attack hit Swampert, causing him to cry out in pain as he briefly delayed the attack. However he recovered quickly and continued, but not before Incineraptor was able to get back on his feet and jump away while holding Ash by his jacket with his teeth.
Swampert's attack hit the ground creating a small crater. As he looked back up with his fists still in the crater, he saw Incineraptor releasing Ash as he regained his footing with Greninja and Lucario coming up on either side and Pikachu jumping in front.
"Fine then, if this is how it's going to be. Swampert, use surf on all of them!" Damion commanded angrily.
A large wave formed in front of Swampert and came rushing towards Ash and his Pokémon.
"Incineraptor, use stone edge to get us above the wave!"
Incineraptor slammed his tail into the ground and a tall stone pillar shot them all up above the water attack.
"Bad move, now you're trapped. Swampert, hydro pump!"
"I have an idea. Incineraptor, fire up flare blitz and hold it," Ash said as he returned Lucario and Greninja. Incineraptor looked at Ash with a concerned look as Swampert just started to fire his attack. "Trust me," Ash exclaimed as Pikachu jumped onto Ash's shoulder, and he jumped onto Incineraptor's back and his eyes glowed blue. Incineraptor burst into a red-orange flame as Ash and Pikachu's body's glowed light blue, using aura to protect him and Pikachu from the flames. As this happened, Ash infused his aura into the flames turning them light blue as they also became stronger.
The hydro pump connected with the flare blitz, as a cloud of steam began to billow from the attack. The flare blitz was extremely hot and was evaporating much of the attack, but Incineraptor still cried out in pain as he began to be pushed back by the part of the attack that didn't evaporate.
"Hang in there, just a little longer," Ash encouraged as he patted Incineraptor's neck. Incineraptor then anchored himself down with his sickle shaped toe claws as his teeth clenched tight as he endured the super effective attack.
Soon Swampert ceased his attack and looked at the top of the stone edge where Incineraptor and Ash were last, as it was now being hidden by a cloud of steam. Damion walked up beside Swampert with a satisfied expression as he knew there was no way Incineraptor could have withstood that attack. As the seconds passed, the steam dissipated more and more, until they could finally see the top of the stone edge. What they saw left both Damion and Swampert with matching shocked and perplexed expressions, as the top of the stone edge was empty.
Running away from Damion, going from roof top to roof top was none other than Incineraptor with Ash riding on his back. Both were enjoying the wind passing over them, as Ash and Pikachu were sweating from the steam and it was cooling him off, and was drying off Incineraptor.
Serena and Yuuka were sitting at a table under a metal overhang at the Pokémon Center, with all their Pokémon out. Yuuka was busy looking online for any information as to what was happening with Ash, as Serena was searching far for Ash with her psychic powers. All of a sudden their attention was brought back to their current location by the sound of something heavy hitting the overhang. A few seconds later, they saw Incineraptor jump down to the ground with Ash on his back.
"Oh thank Arceus you're ok," Serena said to Ash with a sigh of relief.
Yuuka just looked with her mouth hung open as she saw her idol riding on what is widely considered one of the most dangerous Pokémon in the world, only making him look even more awesome in her eyes.
Serena rushed to Ash and gave him a hug. "You're soaked? What happened?" Serena asked when she realized from her own clothes getting wet.
"Long story," Ash replied as an angry look formed on his face and his fists balled. "But in a word, Damion."
"Are you going to be ok?" Serena asked with a concerned tone. Even though she wasn't reading his mind, she could feel his emotions, and could see just how angry Ash was.
"I will be, but first," Ash then turned to Incineraptor. "I think I understand what's going on with you, and thankfully no one got hurt because of it. You're still part of this family, which is kind of like being in a pack, but I'm not your alpha. I don't see myself as any higher than you or any of my other Pokémon. Despite our different roles, I see us all as equal. So if you're good with that, you're welcome to stay with us as a part of this family."
Incineraptor looked down at Ash the entire time, as he was close to seven feet tall, and heard and understood all of it. He took one step back, making it look like he was going to leave, but then bowed his head down to show his loyalty to Ash. Ash then smiled as he put his hand on Incineraptor's head, happy that he was still in the family.
