"Hey! Plasma jerk! Give Cinccino back!" Hilda yelled chasing a Team Plasma grunt deep into the forest on route 7.
Hilda could hear Cinccino's screeches and cries, which only made it more vital that she get her Pokémon back.
"In your dreams, trainer scum!" The grunt called back, running into a clearing in the forest. The grunt stopped abruptly in the clearing and Hilda caught up before stopping as well.
"My king!" The grunt said.
Cinccino became motionless as she looked at the third person in the forest.
"Put the Pokémon down" he commanded.
"But sire-"
"Now. We are not to steal Pokémon, we are to persuade trainers to release them. Put the Cinccino down"
The grunt hesitantly put Cinccino down, and the Pokémon ran over to Hilda and jumped in her arms.
Hilda gave Cinccino a big hug, "Oh Cinccino, I'm so glad you're okay!"
"Lord N-" the grunt began.
"-Leave" N cut off.
The grunt glared at Hilda before running off.
Once the grunt was out of sight, N sighed. "I'm sorry about that"
Hilda looked at N suspiciously.
"I didn't send him after you, I promise"
"I thought you wanted trainers and Pokémon separated" Hilda said.
"I do-" N said, "but we're rivals remember? I want you to have a fair chance against me when I'm recognized as the hero"
"Right..." Hilda mumbled. "So what are you doing out her, your majesty?" Hilda asked, stressing N's title.
N scrunched up his nose, "I heard there was a sick Pokémon on top of Celestial tower, so I came here to help, but my friends informed me that it was already taken care of"
Hilda chuckled, "Yeah that was Skyla"
"Skyla?"
"Yeah," Hilda said, the Pokémon in her arms scurrying on top of her head. "She's the gym leader of Mistralton city"
"Disgusting"
"Oh my god, right?" Hilda said in a mocking tone, "What's disgusting?" She asked in her normal voice.
"Gyms"
"Ah. Hear that Cinccino?" Hilda said, picking her Pokémon up from her head and sitting in the grass. She put her Pokémon on the ground and held the Pokémon's paws. "Gyms are bad! Rawr!," she said in a voice attempting to mimic N's.
"Cinno!" Her Pokémon laughed, wiggling its ribbons.
N rolled his eyes and sat across from Hilda.
"I don't sound like that" he defended, patting Cinccino's head. Cinccino purred at the affection.
"'I don't sound like that'" Hilda mimicked.
"Okay, okay" N sighed, taking his hand off Cinccino's head.
Hilda giggled and N smiled. Cinccino scurried over to N and forced her head under his hand.
"Cinccino, that's not very lady-like" Hilda joked.
Cinccino stuck her tongue out at her trainer.
"How dare you! You're so gonna get it" Hilda laughed as her Pokémon tackled her and she dramatically fell backwards.
N laughed quietly as he watched the two interact. Cinccino jumped from Hilda into N's lap. Hilda sat upright, still giggling.
"Hey Cinccino, wanna do something funny?" Hilda asked.
Cinccino, intrigued, listened for its trainers command.
"Tickle"
Cinccino smirked looking up at N.
"Uh oh" was all he could say before Cinccino began tickling him. He fell on his back, laughing.
"M-make her stop!" He said in between laughs.
"Hmm let me think about it..."
"H-Hilda!" N laughed.
"Okay okay...on one condition"
"Anything!"
"You have to answer any question I ask you with full honesty"
"Fine!"
"Cinccino, return" Hilda called, returning her Pokémon to her Pokeball.
"Oh Arceus..." N breathed, sitting upright.
"Alright Mr. Pokémon," Hilda began, pulling a book out of her bag. "Do you know this Pokémon?" She asked, pointing to a picture of a grey and red fox Pokémon.
N scooted over to her so he was sitting next to her. He looked at the picture over her shoulder.
"Zorua? Sure"
"Any idea on where to find one?"
"Depends on whether or not you're planning on imprisoning one or not"
"No" Hilda sighed, "I just want to see one. I heard they can use their Illusion ability to look like anything!"
"They can"
"Awesome! I read that sometimes they disguise themselves as humans"
Hilda looked over at N suspiciously.
"You'd tell me if you were a Zorua right?" She teased, poking his chest.
N laughed, "I wish I was a Zorua. But I was raised by one for a few years"
"You were raised by a Zorua?"
"Well kind of," N explained, "I was raised by Pokémon from the time I was a baby until I was about six. Maybe six, I don't know"
"Maybe?"
N nodded.
"How old are you now?" Hilda asked.
"Eighteen?"
"Wow" Hilda exhaled.
"Well how old are you, Ms. Perfect?"
"Fifteen"
"I thought most trainers started their journey at ten?"
"Not me. Anyways, so you were raised by Pokémon? What happened?"
"My father found me and took me in"
"Woah"
"What?" N laughed.
"You're really interesting, you know that?"
N's eyes widened slightly. The two stared at each other for what felt like hours.
"So," N said, "you want to see a Zorua?"
"Yeah," Hilda confirmed, turning her attention back to the book in her hands.
"You just want to see one?"
"Yeah. I think they're so cute and interesting. I heard they're super rare though. I'll probably never see one, but it's totally on the bucket list"
"Bucket list?"
"Yeah. Ya know, a list of things I want to do or see before I die"
N thought for awhile.
"Meet me back here at nine" N said.
"What?" Hilda asked as N stood up. He offered her his hand. She took it and he helped her up.
"Meet me back here at nine" He repeated.
"Why?"
"Just trust me"
"Okay..." Hilda said hesitantly, realizing she was still holding N's hand. She blushed, and let go of his hand.
"You can trust me," N assured, "promise"
"Okay" Hilda said, her voice an octave higher than usual.
"Great, see you in a few hours" N said, walking off into the forest.
Hilda's Xtransceiver went off right as N was out of ear-shot.
"Hello?" She answered shakily.
"Hilda! Hurry over to the Pokémon center, it's gonna start raining!" Cheren said.
"Oh okay!" Hilda responded, hanging up and bringing out her Unfezant to give her a ride back to the city.
Hilda and Cheren sat in the Pokémon center together eating dinner and watching the rain pour down from the sky.
"It's really coming down" Cheren noted.
"I hope it clears up soon" Hilda said.
"How come?"
"Oh uh...I just don't want it to be muddy tomorrow!" Hilda said, laughing nervously.
Cheren asked, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine. So when are you and Bi gonna get together?" Hilda teased.
Cheren groaned, "Never. Never ever"
"Aw come on! You two would be so perfect!"
"No, Hilda"
"Aw you're no fun" Hilda complained.
"Whatever"
Cheren and Hilda talked of Pokémon training as they finished their dinner. They decided they were going to share a room, so they headed to their room to get ready for bed.
It was about eight when Hilda and Cheren finished getting ready for bed.
"I'm going to bed, Hilda"
"Okay, goodnight Cheren"
Hilda got up out of bed about a half hour later. She snuck over to Cheren's bed to make sure he was asleep. Once she confirmed that he was, she grabbed her bag full of Pokeballs, took Cheren's umbrella (she assumed he wouldn't mind), and walked out the door.
Hilda grabbed a jacket from her bag and put it on. The common area in the Pokémon center was dead silent and the lights were off. Nurse Joy's light was on behind her desk, but she was absent, most likely in the bathroom, as Hilda heard her Audino in the back room.
"Litwick c'mon out" Hilda whispered, releasing her Pokémon.
"Litwick!" Her Pokémon chirped.
"Shhh" Hilda encouraged. The candle Pokémon put its hands on its mouth.
"It's not raining that bad anymore," Hilda whispered, taking her hat off and shoving it in her bag, "But I don't want you walking"
Hilda grabbed a plate from the buffet table so Litwick could sit on it.
As Hilda reached the door, she opened Cheren's umbrella and walked out of the door.
Rain fought against the umbrella, but it wasn't hard enough to even begin to get through the umbrella.
Litwick's flame illuminated the path ahead as Hilda walked.
Litwick turned to its trainer as if asking where they were going.
"We're meeting someone. Hopefully just one person..." Hilda said, unsure.
Hilda eventually reached the clearing where N had said to meet him, and he was there waiting for her.
"Hilda!" He said, not having an umbrella.
"How do you see with all that wet hair in your face? Or without a light?" Hilda asked teasingly, walking over to him and holding her umbrella over both of them, making sure her Litwick was still underneath it of course.
"Are you wearing pajamas?" N asked.
"And a jacket" Hilda pointed out.
"Who's this?" N asked, referring to the Pokémon Hilda had.
"Litwick is the newest member of my team. He's going to help me win my seventh gym badge, right buddy?" Hilda explained. Litwick cheered.
Hilda noticed that N became uncomfortable at the mention of gyms, so she changed the subject, "So what did you want to see me for?"
N's eyes lit up, "I wanted you to meet someone" he said, inching away from under the umbrella back into the rain.
"Am I going to want to meet this person?"
"Oh they're not a person"
"Oh?"
N turned to a bush, "Hey come out. She's safe, I promise" He said crouching down.
A small gray and red fox made its way from out of the bushes slowly. The Pokémon's fur became wet as the rain hit it.
Hilda gasped, "Is that a Zorua?" She asked in awe.
N smiled and nodded "Yep. This just happens to be the very same Zorua who raised me for those few years"
Hilda slowly lowered herself onto her knees, not caring about how muddy the ground was, and putting Litwick down, still making sure he was under the umbrella.
"Wow, okay I hope I'm not offending you or anything Zorua, but you're super cute!" Hilda squealed. Zorua smirked and puffed out its chest.
N laughed, "Well he prefers the term strong, but he thanks you for the compliment"
The rain slowly began to stop. N held out his hand and when no drops of rain fell on it, he took the umbrella from Hilda's hand and closed it. He put it down next to Litwick.
Hilda held her hand out to Zorua who sniffed it before shoving his head underneath her hand.
"Oh you're so soft!" Hilda cheered.
Zorua purred. That only made Hilda squeal more.
"Hey do you mind showing me that ability of yours?" Hilda asked, removing her hand from Zorua's head.
Zorua nodded, its body molding into a different form. The form it chose was N.
Zorua put its arm around N, laughing.
"Oh come on, Zorua" N sighed.
"Wow this is so cool!" Hilda said, excitedly. "It's illusion is perfect! Of course it looks drier than you" She joked, standing up and pulling on N's shirt that was soaked from rain. Zorua laughed and N sighed, shaking his head.
"Well look! Everything's the same! The hair color, the face, your hands!" Hilda chattered, taking the hands of both N's and pressing them together to show that they were the same size.
"Woah" she said.
"What is it?" N asked.
"Your hands are big" she said.
"No they're not!" N defended.
"Yeah! Look!" She said taking N's hand and pressing it against her own. N's hand was quite bigger than hers, more so in his fingers. His fingers were longer than hers, and he could probably fold his fingers over straight fingers.
"See?" She asked sternly. N saw Zorua smirk at him before returning to its normal form and walking over to Hilda's Litwick.
N focused his attention to their hands. He never really noticed how big his hands were. Maybe it was just that Hilda had small hands. Yes, surely that was it. Her hands were small and frail.
Their eyes locked.
"See?" She said again, less stern this time.
"Yes" N replied. The pair began leaning their faces closer slowly-
*ring* *ring*
Hilda sighed and picked up her Xtransceiver, moving away from N.
"Hilda! Where are you?! Are you outside?! I have a right to send Unfezant after you-" Cheren scolded.
"I'm fine Cheren" Hilda stated calmly.
"Fine? Fine?! You said you were 'fine' earlier, and now you're gone?! You took my umbrella!"
"Listen Cheren-"
"-No Hilda! You can't just do this! You have Nurse Joy and I worried sick! Not to mention Bianca! I called her asking if you told her where you were going, and she practically had a panic attack! I'm sending Unfezant to look for you, if you don't come back this instant"
"Yes mother"
"Hilda!-"
"Look Cheren it's not a big deal! Litwick and I were doing some late night training"
"In the rain?!"
"It's not raining anymore"
"Just get back here" Cheren stated, hanging up.
Hilda ran a hand through her hair, which was oddly still up in its usual ponytail.
"Cheren's gonna have my head..." Hilda muttered, returning her Pokémon to its Pokeball. The atmosphere became darker, but thanks to the full moon poking through the clouds, she could still see.
"So... You're leaving?" N asked, a slight sad tone to his voice.
"Yeah...yeah I really have to go" Hilda said, rubbing her face with her hands. She grabbed a Pokeball and let out the Pokémon that was inside.
"Unfez!!" The Pokémon cried, extending its wings. As soon as he noticed N, he stepped in front of Hilda and puffed out his chest.
"It's okay Unfezant" Hilda soothed, petting her Pokémon under his chin. Unfezant glared at N before shooting his trainer a baffled look.
"It's okay, really" she assured.
Unfezant shot one final glare at N before resigning unhappily. Unfezant allowed Hilda to climb on his back.
"Goodbye Zorua, it was lovely meeting you!" Hilda said sweetly. Zorua nodded its head in acknowledgement.
"N- until next time"
"Until next time" N recited as Unfezant took off back into the city.
"Bye Hilda"
"Do you have any idea how hurt you could've gotten? Do you even know what time it is?" Cheren lectured, pacing back and forth in front of Hilda as she sat on her bed.
"But I'm not hurt. I'm fine" Hilda protested.
"Stop saying you're fine!" Cheren yelled, stopping in front of Hilda and facing her.
"But Cheren-"
"-Don't 'but Cheren' me! Look at you!" Cheren said pointing to Hilda's pants. "You've got mud all over you!"
"So?" Hilda huffed, crossing her arms.
"So? So?! Hilda! What could possibly be so important that it could not wait until morning?! Or until it stopped raining?!"
Hilda remained silent, not wishing to argue with Cheren any longer. She decided it would be best not to tell her friends, or anyone for that matter, about her exchanges with N. He's supposed to be the enemy. She's supposed to hate him, but... he was so sweet. She told him she wanted to see a Zorua, and he went out of his way to show her one! She noticed he no longer tried to force his philosophy on her, but rather tried to explain it to her.
Cheren was still lecturing when Hilda said, "I'm going to bed"
"Uh no the heck you're not!"
"Cheren I'm tired. I've got an early start tomorrow"
"You should've thought of that before you snuck out!"
"Cheren I know your hearts in the right place, but I just wanna sleep right now. You can lecture me in the morning" Hilda said, getting under the covers.
"You're gonna get mud all over the bed" Cheren hissed.
"It's dry" Hilda stated turning off the lamp that illuminated the room. As the room became dark, Hilda heard Cheren sigh and get into bed.
"I'm just looking out for you, ya know" Cheren said.
"I know. Goodnight Cherry" Hilda replied. She smiled as she heard him reject the nickname her and Bianca had given him and fell asleep to the sound of him ranting.
