#151 Mew
"Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it."
-Gold Pokedex
Dear Diary,
Today I completed the PokeDex Professor Oak gave me. I was ecstatic to see the numbers flip from ninety-nine to one hundred percent. I couldn't believe it, so I scrolled through the entirety of it. All of the icons for all one hundred and fifty Pokemon were filled in with a beautiful, colorful picture of each creature I had obtained. Memories flooded back to me as I re-read through every entry, from Bulbasaur to Mewtwo; yes, even Mewtwo. I'm still a ways away from completing my journey though, I still have yet to make it back to Pallet Town. As I am writing this, I am sitting in Cerulean Cave after completing the great challenge of capturing the rogue Mewtwo. It was a worthy opponent, I would even say it was a tougher battle than facing the entirety of the Elite Four. I just can't wait to get home, rest, and prove to Professor Oak my completion of his task.
Dear Diary,
I decided it would be best to take a boat home from Vermillion rather than walk and hitchhike all the way back. The boat ride was the relaxation that I needed after such an exhausting journey. I will speak with the Professor tomorrow and present him with all of the information from my Dex. He'll be so impressed with my work. I have got to be the most successful sixteen year old ever.
Dear Diary,
Sorry for my messy writing, but the strangest thing just happened to me. At 1:47 AM, my PokeDex beeped as if it registered a new Pokemon. The noise jolted me awake. At first, I thought it was a dream of my adventures. Then, the noise kept going. This seemed like something worth checking out instead of waiting for morning. The Dex only beeps once, it doesn't keep going. I opened the PokeDex and sure enough, there was a new silhouette on the screen. It almost reminded me of Mewtwo, but smaller. I think I should just leave this issue for tomorrow when I can talk to the professor.
Dear Diary,
The papers and nation news came out for the ceremony where I presented Professor Oak with my PokeDex. It felt weird accepting the certificate commemorating my Dex completion after seeing a mysterious one hundred and fifty-first phantom Pokemon pop up. Which, yes, I checked this morning to make sure it wasn't just a dream. There is a blank page in my Dex. The press thought it was so impressive that I was the only person to have ever "completed" a PokeDex, especially since I was so young. I smiled awkwardly through the interviews, then, when I had the opportunity, asked to see the Professor in a private meeting this afternoon. Speaking of that meeting, I have to go now. The receptionist is waving me in as I write this. Wish me luck diary.
-----
I sat in Professor Oak's office, my legs shaking up and down rapidly. He faced away from me as he studied my PokeDex. Quickly and frantically, I glanced around his office at his various
awards for being the youngest and most ingenious Pokemon Professor ever. Like me, he achieved success young. He was barely over the age of twenty-five and was already world renowned.
I heard him scrolling through the records of my Dex, pausing occasionally to look for irregularities. After what seemed like ages of examination, he sighed and placed the machine on the desk behind him, refusing to tear his eyes away from the window.
"I'll be honest with you," he began, "I have no idea what Pokemon this could be." He turned to face me, "Unless you take folktales into consideration." He raised his eyebrows as to ask my permission to continue.
I nodded, "I do, that's how I found out about Arcticuno, Zapdos, and Moltres."
He sat down gingerly while rubbing his forehead. "Tell me about the name 'Mewtwo.' Don't you find it odd that it's name includes the number two, as if there could have been a first one?"
Leaning back in my chair, I considered this information. Two facts popped into my mind disproving this theory. "Except, the PokeDex said this mystery Pokemon was only about one foot tall. Mewtwo is a giant compared to that. Also, if that were true, wouldn't Mewtwo be listed as one hundred and fifty-one and not one hundred and fifty?"
Oak shrugged, "It's just a possibility. Like I said: it's a folktale, they aren't entirely reliable. Plus, I heard this when I studied in the Southern Hemisphere, it is highly unlikely this folk Pokemon would be found here if anywhere at all." He continued speaking as he reached down into his desk, "Maybe you'll find this Mewone or whatever it is if you travel to Johto."
My eyebrows scrunched up, "Why would I go to Johto? There's nothing there except for a bunch of weird people who believe in legends too much for their own good. Even I know when to draw the line between fiction and myth."
"Not just new legendary Pokemon," Oak placed something that looked like a different version of my Dex on the table. He sat upright and slid it over to me. "Our neighbors in Johto have approximately one hundred different Pokemon from what we have here." He leaned in and whispered excitedly, "That's one hundred new Pokemon we haven't seen, ever! I want you to go and travel the region and record information on all of them."
The new Dex already had all of my old entries entered in. I scrolled through until I found number one hundred and fifty-one. The list continued on blank after it, but I couldn't help but stare at that one missing entry. After a few silent seconds, I nodded, "Alright, I'll head out in two months. I want to spend some time with my mom."
"I wish you luck with your endeavors, especially in finding number one hundred and fifty-one." Professor Oak exclaimed as I walked out the door.
-----
Dear Diary,
Johto is a wonderful place. The culture here is rich and revolves around the region's deep mythology. I was wrong to think of these people as a bunch of old geezers who obsess over their ancient religions. Actually, one of the stories has piqued my interest. Some of the people that I've talked to have mentioned a small Pokemon that no one has ever seen. They are convinced it exists even if there is no proof of it. There's a shrine dedicated to it in Ilex Forest. Locals told me that I might get to see it if I gain the favor of the legends. This is my only hope, I have to capture every legendary to even have a chance of finding it. I will finish this new task set out before me.
Dear Diary,
I am currently sitting on top of the Bell Tower with a custom made heavy ball in hand. Inside the ball rests Ho-Oh, the legendary fire bird. In my other hand I hold an ultra ball that holds Lugia. Now all that's left is to return to Ilex Forest and awaken the Pokemon in the shrine. Professor Oak thinks I should come home and stop chasing fairy tales. He says it isn't right for an adult to do such things. He also says he wants me to stop catching the legends so I don't disturb the environment. Instead, I stopped reading his letters.
Diary,
Celebi. That was the name of the Pokemon locked away in Ilex Forest. After dragging it out of the time portal it resided in, I battled it fiercely with my team of legends and overpowered champions of Kanto. I was so excited to finally have a completed the PokeDex. I sat down to write out some information about what I observed when I realized what Celebi's number was. It was two hundred and fifty-one, a number that was a whole hundred more than what I needed. I felt like the gods were taunting me at this point. Just to make sure, I scrolled back through the list to see if there was still a blank spot. Much to my dismay, one hundred and fifty-one was still blank. I think I will head to Hoenn next and search there.
-----
The salty scent in the air pricked at my nose as mist wafted up from the sea below. I closed my eyes and let the sounds of the waves carry me off to Hoenn and to sleep.
At least until one of the sailors decided to talk to me, "Oi, how's it going young one?" Sighing, I responded, "Despite my long and tiring journey, I am alright."
He waited a bit to respond, as if anticipating that I would return the question. "Oh, is that so? Where you off to? Hoenn obviously, but why."
I propped myself up on one arm from my reclined position on the chair. "I was the prodigy kid who caught all the Pokemon in Kanto and Johto. I want to do it again in Hoenn."
He just laughed in my face as a response. "You're a bit late. Someone already did that in this region. Try Sinnoh or Kalos if you want to keep your record going." He turned to walk away from me.
"They didn't catch all of them." I protested.
The sailor stopped, "Excuse me?"
I took off my sunglasses and made eye contact with him. He shifted on his feet uncomfortably. "I said, whoever caught 'all' of the Pokemon didn't catch them all. They are a fraudulent liar. I read their records and they mention nothing of Groudon, Kyoger, Raquaza, or any other legendaries."
In response, the sailor started laughing again, "Yeah, good luck with your case of crazy. Everyone knows those guys don't exist or they would have been captured as well. Seriously kid, give up chasing legends or you'll lose whatever shred of hope, sanity, and pure heart you have left."
I let him walk away this time before mumbling to myself. "I'm afraid that I already have."
-----
Dear Diary,
Based on the dates of my entries, you'll notice this one is way overdue. By now, I have gone through both Unova and Hoenn. My adventures in both places bore no fruit in my search for one hundred and fifty-one. For the sake of science, I will give a brief explanation of my excursions.
In Hoenn, I joined forces with two brilliant men by the names of Archie and Maxie. They too were fascinated by the legends of their home region. We worked together to unearth Groudon and Kyoger. Unfortunately, by doing such a thing, we rekindled the flame in these two Pokemons' ancient war. Both men and their militia fled before the battle even started like cowards. I quelled both with my team of legends and added them to the ranks. Then, using them, I was able to coax Raquaza and Deoxys out of deep space. They were both easy pickings with the forces of land and sea at my command. Then, after feeling a disturbance, Jirachi, a tiny Pokemon confronted me. Thinking it was on hundred and fifty-one, I defeated it and caught it with glee. To my dismay, it was not the phantom I was chasing.
Once again without anymore leads, I moved onto Unova. My companion there was N, who was a most peculiar fellow. He could talk to Pokemon. This ability helped give me new insight in my quest. Him and I searched for legends using both human and Pokemon guides. They led us to many mythical places all over the region where I continued to forge a name for myself as the bane of the gods. I captured the four swords and the kami trio without N's knowledge. It just didn't seem like the right time to tell him. Even the common public knew who I was at this point. As I had predicted, N abandoned me soon after I took possession of Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem. He called me sick and wrong for doing such a thing. The insults slid off of me like rain drops on windows. I did discover another miniature legend named Victini though. The figure of the Pokemon looked almost like one hundred and fifty-one's, but it was not. It registered it as four hundred and ninety-four instead. Hopefully, my adventures in Kalos and Sinnoh are better.
Dear Diary,
My life is miserable, but I refuse to give up hope now that I am this close. No one wants to work with me to help me advance my findings. Everyone thinks I'm insane and avoids me like the plague. The Kalos legendaries were far too easy, they aren't even worth mentioning. If you are
really curious about them, go look them up in my digital PokeDex, the date should be uploaded by now. I'm writing from the bottom step of Spear Pillar in Sinnoh, which so far is another disappointment. Spear Pillar is said to be the hallowed hall of the gods and I can understand why. The aura radiating off of this place is majestic and overwhelming. My final challenge stands before me. Once I've conquered god, one hundred and fifty-one will have to reveal itself to me.
Dear Diary,
This is my final entry, I officially give up. I met something I never thought I would. I met god. No, seriously, the god of the universe appeared before me. It called itself Arceus and commanded me to stop chasing Mew, or as I have called it all this time, one hundred and fifty-one. I tried fighting Arceus with my hoard of gods, but none of them would stand against their creator. Instead, they turned their metaphorical swords to me. I remember feeling helpless at that point. All of my Pokemon surrounded me with glowing, untamed, and wild eyes. They reminded me of how the appeared to me before I caught them: like they were ready for a fight. I could feel their wrath crashing in on me. The feeling suffocated me. Then, I did something I hadn't done in a long time. I cried. I cried and begged for mercy in front of the god of everything. The last thing I remember was Arceus whispering to me, "Sleep now child." Then, it reached out with one of its one thousand arms and put me to sleep.
I woke up here, in a bed in Pallet Town. I saw myself in the mirror for the first time in months. My hair is insane and frazzled. My eyes have the look of a crazy person who has been in a mental institution for too long. The most startling thing of all though, was my hair's color. Gray flecked my temples and the rest of my hair. I had to do a double take to make sure I was actually looking at myself and not a painting.
Professor Oak was here just here minutes ago, he must have been anticipating my revival. I look just as old as he does, even if he is ten years older. When he walked in to see me awake, he just shook his head at me and exited silently. Before he did so, he left a letter on my bedside table on top of my PokeDex. My fingers brushed against my PokeDex as I reached for the letter. My body shivered when they did. I don't think I ever want to see that cursed piece of plastic again. The letter brought me more melancholy though, and I couldn't help but sob at the letter's content. The date was from two months ago. It informed me about how my mom had died a month before the letter was written and that I needed to come home for her funeral. Oak also commanded in the letter that I needed to stop chasing fairy tales. That was the moment I realized, at the ripe old age of forty-nine, I needed to turn my life around.
-----
Dear Diary,
Grandma told me I have to write this. She said it's good for documenting your travels and to "see how much you grow as a person in your lifetime." I think it's silly. Today I get my starter Pokemon, I already know I'm going to pick Bulbasaur. It's so cute, how can I not. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it and the PokeDex Professor Oak will give me, but I'll figure it out. Opps, I'm out of things to write :P
-----
I stared blankly at the diary page after drawing an emoticon to liven up the entry. Writing in a diary sucks, I figured I wouldn't ever do it after I leave home. Then I shrugged and figured I would. Finally, I figured it would be better to leave it up to fate.
Next to the open journal sat my grandma's PokeDex. I switched it on and scrolled through the filled pages. It always bothered me that she had left it at only ninety-nine point nine percent completion instead of finding that last Pokemon. She even had Arceus. It couldn't have been that difficult to find the last one, could it?
Someone rapped on my door. "Paige, are you ready yet?" grandma asked in her raspy voice.
"Yeah grandma, just let me put my shoes on and I'll be ready to go." I dropped the PokeDex at my side and rushed to my closet. The choice between the pink converse and the black boots was tough. In the end, I decided on the converse because they were comfier for walking.
I sat on the edge of my bed and began to lace up my shoes when I heard something fly through the open window. Sighing, I reached for the broom to chase out whatever stupid bird had gotten in. I swung the stick in a wide arc, but stopped before actually connecting with what floated before me.
A tiny pink Pokemon floated mere feet from my face. "Mew?" it squeaked.
I dropped the broom and slowly reached my hand toward it. Without hesitation, it rested its head in my palm. It felt warm and filled me with an overwhelming joy I had never felt before. I stroked it gently, letting it get used to my touch before I tried to bring it in closer.
When it finally began to move in towards me, the door swung open and my grandma's voice filled the room. "Alright, who's ready to go get their first Pokemon?" She shot me a huge grin, the a puzzled look when she saw how I was standing. From what she saw, I was stroking the air.
I looked back to explain the Pokemon only to notice that it was gone. Puzzled, I began to look around for where it might have fled to. Before getting too far into my search though, I heard the beeping of a PokeDex with a brand new entry.
My grandma beat me to the punch of examining the new entry. Her eyes widened with every passing second until I thought they would pop out of her head. She took a seat and began to cry. "Where did you see this Pokemon?" She asked barely above a whisper.
Shrugging, I tried to force out a sentence, only for it to come out as stammers. My grandma beat me to completing a full sentence too. "Where did you see this Pokemon?" She repeated with more force.
I let her cry as I gently tugged the database away from her hands. The screen displayed a picture and some information for the Pokemon I had just seen.
"Mew, #151
Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart..."
A/N: Hey everyone, thanks for reading this chapter. I appreciate it. Two things. One: this chapter was requested by @A_Writers_Life_95 Go check them out if you have some free time, they're an excellent writer. Two: I tried to publish this chapter earlier today (3/6/16) but I'm not sure if it actually worked. If it did, and this is a repeat chapter, please let me know in the comments so I can delete this version. If this isn't a repeat, then I'm not sure what happened and it's not really a big deal. Anyway, next chapter is Breloom, then I've no more requests. Feel free to leave one in the comments below or message me.
