#521 Unfezant
"Males have plumage on their heads. They will never let themselves feel close to anyone other than their Trainers."

"Aw, this Unfezant is sooooo weak. I was hoping it would have been useful to our team. Go ahead and knock it out Pikachu, you need the experience anyway."
The Pikachu obeyed its owner's command and used thunderbolt to knock Unfezant out. Like the dozens of times he had been knocked out before, his senses dulled and the world went black.
When Unfezant came to, he had guessed that not much time had passed. The sun was still in the same place overhead and the Joltik in the tree had a half finished web. Unfezant recognized the Joltik as the one that he had picked out for lunch before he was attacked by Pikachu. Joltik had just started his web at the beginning of the fight.
The Joltik noticed Unfezant had woken up and clicked its pinchers at him as if to mock him. Unfezant brushed his long pink feathers out of his face with his wing, attempting to regain some dignity.
"Be glad I'm not hungry anymore." Unfezant cawed at Joltik. Once again, Joltik clicked its pinchers as if to laugh.
Unfezant returned to preening up his feathers. Having fixed the vibrant ones on his head, he moved on to his wings. Feathers stuck up all over the place. "Thanks Pikachu," he muttered as he noticed many singed gray feathers. Any other Pokemon probably would have guessed that the dark gray and black was part of Unfezant's exuberant pattern, but Unfezant knew his feathers' pattern better than that.
It took some time, but all the feathers were back in their rightful places. Unfezant was about to fly away when he heard his stomach growl. "Great," he complained.
He looked to the Joltik he had targeted earlier, but he had since finished his web and electrified it. Unfezant strongly considered it, but decided against the trouble it would be to get the bug away from its web.
Instead, he decided to fly to a different part of the forest. There was a small section with logs that bugs just loved to hide in. If he could lure them out, it was easy pickings. The Caterpie and Wurmple hardly put up a fight. If that part of the forest were a restaurant, Unfezant would be considered a regular.
He soared to the west towards his destination. As he flew along, he got lost in thought. The massive structures of what humans called "cities" and "buildings" rose up ahead of him in the distance. He had heard many trainers complain about having to get through the thick forest to get to what they called Castelia City.
How he wanted to be caught by a trainer and taken to the city. It seemed like such a magnificent place to be. Trainers who came through the forest usually searched for rare Pokemon to capture before continuing on their way to the city. Unfezant had been called rare and beautiful on many occasions. On those same occasions though, he had also been called weak and useless.
He felt tears sting his eyes. All he wanted was to be loved by a trainer. He knew that would never happen though since he was so weak.
As he flew along, he kept dreaming of being accepted by a loving trainer. He would be loved, brushed, fed...
A dark shadow swooped overhead, snapping him out of his delusions. He looked around frantically for its source, but it was nowhere to be found. Shaking off the fear from seeing the shadow, Unfezant continued as if nothing happened. However, he couldn't shake the new feeling of being watched.
Again, a shadow swooped over him. He turned around to search this time, but still found nothing. Again, he turned to continue flying, but was met with the beak of another bird.
"Hello there," she said "How are you, handsome?"
Unfezant recoiled a bit. He forgot to flap for a millisecond and plummeted. Quickly regaining his wits, flew back up to his original height, and spoke. "Uh, hello?"
The new bird, a beautiful female Unfezant with dreamy eyes, laughed, "Oh, don't be so shy. We're birds of a feather right?"
He nodded, still caught a little off guard by the beautiful female. "So, uh..." He gulped and tried to collect his thoughts. He was ready to try to speak again albeit still having a huge lump in his throat, when his stomach growled loudly.
Unfezant felt his face grow hot with embarrassment, "I'm so sorry, I was on my way to grab lunch when you..." 'Ambushed me, attacked me, stopped me? What do I say here? Arceus help me!'
The female Unfezant laughed, "It's perfectly alright. Would you like to go catch some food together?" she suggested.
Unfezant nodded, still nervous as all get out. "I-I know a-a-a great place not far from h-here." he stuttered.
The female nodded, "Sounds great, lead the way."
Unfezant took the lead. He wasn't nearly as good of a flyer as his female companion, but he kept going with confidence. He was the beautiful one, she was the practical one. That rang true for their whole species. The males sucked at flying, but their feathers were a lot more decorated than their female counterparts.
They approached their destination. "See that tiny clearing down there? Bug Pokemon love to hide in the logs. If you scratch at the top, they run like mad. Not smart for them, but I'm alright with that."
"How about you scare them and I fly after them?" the female suggested. Unfezant agreed to this plan.
The duo rushed down to a log and perched on top. Unfezant looked at the female Unfezant and nodded. She nodded in response. He scratched and pecked at the top of the log. Nothing happened, so he tried again. This time, the two could hear frantic rustling inside. One or two bugs resided inside, a perfect catch for the two birds. Unfezant pecked and scratched the log once more, and finally, two Wurmple rushed out at full speed.
Unfezant sat and watched as his new friend easily overtook her prey. She was lightning fast as she picked up the meal. She circled back around to Unfezant and dropped the two Wurmple at his feet.
Unfezant gawked at the Wurmple then at Unfezant as she landed. "You're amazing at flying. I don't think I have ever seen anyone move so quickly.
She beamed at him, "Thank you!" She ducked down to the Wurmple and picked it up with her beak. She tore at it while holding it down with her clawed feet. Unfezant followed suit. They ate without saying a word to each other, instead letting the sounds of the summer bugs fill the air.
When they were done, the two sat beside each other and stared off into the dense trees. Unfezant finally broke the silence, "I've not asked you for your name yet."
He looked over to her face and noticed she had scrunched it up as if pondering a deep, psychological question. "My name is Nyla." More silence followed. "What about you, what's your name?"
Unfezant shook his head, "I don't have one. My mom never gave me and my siblings names. She would instead just refer to us as 'hey you! and 'screwup!'" Nyla chuckled and Unfezant joined in after a moment.
The laughter died down after a few seconds and Unfezant continued, "Actually, I had always hoped to get caught by a trainer. They always seem to care for their Pokemon like my mother never did. Plus, they give their Pokemon nicknames. That way, I would finally have a name."
Sorrow dripped from Unfezant's voice, and he felt like he could almost cry. He might have had Nyla not spoken up, "You don't want a trainer, not ever. Humans are horrible creatures."
Unfezant recoiled at her statement, "How can you say something like that. I have only ever seen trainers be kind and loving to their Pokemon. They look so kind and..."
"They are not kind." Nyla erupted with anger. "I belonged to a trainer once. All he ever did was abuse me!" She lifted her wing to reveal her side. A long pink scar interrupted her soft gray feathers. "I failed in a championship battle. I was my trainer's last remaining Pokemon. He put their full trust in me and I let them down."
When the formalities of the competition ended, he took me out back and had his Scizor attack me brutally. He said it was punishment for such a horrible performance. Scizor gave me this scar. It serves me as a reminder to how awful people are."
Unfezant shook his head, "That can't be true for every human ever though. I have seen Pokemon and humans share such beautiful moments together here. From a prized Pokemon evolving to finally catching the Pokemon they had sought after for hours of tracking."
Nyla exploded again, "You haven't seen what goes on behind the scenes though. I never experienced how a high caliber trainer gets their perfect Pokemon, but I heard so many stories about how they go through hundreds of Pokemon in the breeding process. I was 'perfect' so my trainer kept me and trained me to be the fastest and the strongest." Unfezant saw her beginning to cry. "I don't want to know what happened to the rejects."
He started to put a wing around her, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know."
Nyla slapped his wing away, "Well now you do. I hope this has enlightened you to the awful nature of humans."
The pair sat in awkward silence before Unfezant chimed in again, "I think it's about time I go. Thanks for this enlightenment, but you have only set my mind on finding a trainer even more than it was before. I know I will find one that loves and cares for me. Your story sounds like a one in a million type event."
He flew away, but was slammed down by a steely wing. The ground met his body hard, knocking the wind out of his lungs. He gazed up at Nyla flying above his head.
"I can't let you throw your life away." she said. There was an edge of threat to her voice.
"Nyla, you have not control over me. Now, let me get on with my life." Unfezant ordered.
Nyla shook her had and laughed menacingly, "I love you and I refuse to let you go."
Unfezant was finally able to get to his feet, but he hardly remained on them long. He spread his wings and sprang up into the sky. "You're crazy. Now, move aside and let me leave."
Nyla screamed with an intense sound of hatred. The sound made Unfezant uneasy, but surprisingly also hurt him. It felt like claws were being raked over his skin. There was no way he could put up with this.
"Maybe I should give you a scar to match mine! That way you remember my pain and why humans are so deplorable." she snarled.
He landed for a few moments and flapped his wings violently. Nyla laughed at such a gesture, she was oblivious to what Unfezant was attempting to do. She didn't even notice as the winds changed against her making her slower.
Her final and most fatal mistake was not noticing Unfezant slowly becoming cloaked in light. Because she was still laughing and gloating, she forfeited her turn where she could have easily stopped him from attacking. It was that mistake that caused her downfall in this battle.
Unfezant unleashed the charged up sky attack and launched himself at Nyla. Her laugh was cut short and her eyes fluttered shut. He had successfully knocked her out. She plummeted to the ground. Moments later, Unfezant joined her in a much more graceful fashion.
He stood tall over her fainted body. It would be only a few minutes before she woke up, so he prepared to take off and fly far away from there. Something stopped him from doing so though. He spun around wildly to where a trainer was sitting and observing him. On guard, he opened his wings and screeched at the human loudly.
Unfezant had seen this type of human before, she was a member of the bird trainer class. Or, that was what he had gathered from listening to humans communicate with one another.
She took the Poké Balls off of her belt and slowly placed them on the ground. Five balls now rested on the ground. In her right hand, she held one remaining ball. She opened it to reveal that it was empty, then closed it as she approached Unfezant.
Taking a half step back, Unfezant eyed the trainer nervously. He was now wary of trainers after what Nyla had claimed. 'Was she telling the truth? Are humans really that bad?'
Noticing his unease, the trainer put the Poké Ball back on her belt. She put her hands up and took another step towards Unfezant. This time, he didn't move back.
She spoke to him in a small voice, "It's alright, I promise I won't hurt you." She reached one hand towards Unfezant.
At first, he flinched away from her hand, but changed his mind and put the bottom of his head in her palm. She scratched his chin and he cooed gently.
After she deemed it safe, she pulled out the empty Poké Ball again. "You're very strong, I saw your fight just now. Would you like to be one of my birds?" she asked gently.
Unfezant noticed how gentle her voice was compared to Nyla's. This was his destiny, to travel with a trainer. His destiny was not to settle down with another Unfezant, especially not one like Nyla.
He chirped cheerfully in response and slowly moved in closer to the trainer. She laughed and put her arms around his neck. "I'll take that as a yes." A gloved hand was placed on Unfezant's head. She scratched the top of his head with the tips of her fingers. "I think I will call you Corwin. Does that sound good?"
Unfezant's eyes flew open and his heart soared. Never before had he had an actual name. It was impossible to stop his chirping and cheering. The trainer giggled at his glee, "It's settled then, you are now known as Corwin, and you are my Pokemon."
Corwin finally had a place and a name. His new trainer seemed like the sweetest girl in the world. He danced in place. His trainer laughed and joined in after observing him for a second. She didn't realize it, but this was the best day of his life.
