#715 Noivern

"They fly around on moonless nights and attack careless prey. Nothing can beat them in a battle in the dark."
-X Pokedex

Sentret knew better than to be out late at night. Strange things happened when the moon was high in the sky, it was common knowledge in the valley. A most peculiar predator stalked the skies, eating anyone that dared wander around at night. Unfortunately for him, Sentret's stomach got the better of him.

His nose twitched as the sweet scent of berries flooded his senses. He emerged from the bushes into a berry goldmine. Blue, pink, yellow, and all other colors of the rainbow painted the bushes in the dim moonlight. Sucking the drool back into his mouth, Sentret began to examine the different types of berries.

He shuffled around from bush to bush, picking out the best of the litter. He grabbed a purple one here, an orange one there, and maybe even a green one since he felt risky tonight. With the berries in the tight grasp of his tail, he climbed a tree and settled in the nook where a thick branch meet the trunk.

The light breeze over the dry air made this a most perfect night to be out. As he ate, Sentret pondered why no one ever wanted to go out at night. It seemed like the perfect time of day, not too hot but not extremely cold either. The weather was beautiful and you never had to deal with annoying Pokemon. At that last thought, Sentret withdrew his wish. He wanted it to stay peaceful and quiet just the way it was right then.

He should have knocked on the wood of the tree he reclined after thinking such wonderful things of the time of day. Without even a shadow or battle cry, something swooped down upon him. Sentret passed out from sheer horror before even getting a good look at what had sprung on him.

----------

Noivern hunched over the passed out body of Sentret, hoping she hadn't killed the poor thing. She placed her enormous ear on Sentret's chest and waited and waited and waited. Finally, she picked up on a faint yet quick heartbeat.

She sighed with relief, the last thing she wanted to do was kill her soon to be friend. All Noivern had to do now was wait for Sentret to come to. It wouldn't take all that long. The hard part wasn't the waiting, but rather the explaining. No Pokemon trusted her after she "attacked" them. While waiting, she pondered exactly how to explain herself to Sentret and snacked on the berries that had fallen with him. She scooped up a blue one into her mouth and immediately spit it back out. It was so sweet. This time, she sniffed around more carefully before finally picking out a sour smelling green berry.

The moon had moved on in the night sky giving way to the orange and pink hues of morning. Still, Noivern waited for Sentret to wake up. She couldn't wait too much longer, the sunlight would kill her already struggling eyes. Her lack almost complete lack of sight was the only reason she went out solely at night. The thought of going out and socializing during the day with everyone else made her feel elated. Unfortunately, she knew that she would never be able to.

Being out at night scared her actually. She had heard rumors of a terrible beast lurking in the dark. It only appeared on when there was no moon, snatching away anyone brave enough to venture out during such a night. After hearing of such a creature, Noivern decided to shift her time outside to nights with a sliver of a moon to avoid the threat.

Scarily enough, the rumors changed when she did that. The beast now supposedly appeared on nights with almost no moon. She was almost certain it was stalking her. Meeting such a horrible creature would scare her to death. It was said to have huge claws on the end of wings that had a wingspan of the valley itself. Its huge wings let it have the ability to fly almost silently, giving it an advantage over its prey. The scariest thing though, was that it had enormous ears that could hear even the smallest sound.

Noivern tried to shrug off most of those "facts." They were just rumors, nothing more, she tried to reassure herself. Plus, she could probably get away from them if they actually existed. Nothing could sneak up on her because of her oversized ears. And if something tried to, she could easily fly away with her powerful, wide wings.

The sun began to peak over the eastern crest now. Noivern shielded her eyes with one wing and flailed the other frantically out beside her. She couldn't help but let out a screech of pain at the brightness. This was enough for her, she had to return to the darkness of her cave before it grew anymore. As she rose into the air, she noticed Sentret hop up way to quickly for a Pokemon that had supposedly been fainted all night. She hoped she had only imagined him shooting a rude gesture her way.

Flying back was difficult. The sun constantly flashed in her eyes making navigation nearly impossible. She almost crashed into the trees a dozen times. Finally, she drew near to her refuge from the light. The cave was almost pitch black only a few meters in, just the way she preferred. A bunch of Zubats veered out of her way as she entered the cave's mouth. One of them had been perched on her prized stalactite. It knew to move just for her.

She grasped the calcium formation firmly in the grooved claw marks. They were molded perfectly to her feet. She wrapped her wings tightly around her body and let herself drift off to sleep. Hopefully that night would bring better results in the hunt for a friend.

----------

The shrill cries of the Zubat woke Noivern up that night. They rushed out of the opening in massive hoards. Noivern took a moment to stretch her wings out before following suit. The last thing she wanted was a pulled wing on what would hopefully be a big night for her. She let go of her hold on the stalactite and rose into the sky on the winds the Zubats' wings made. There was no moon tonight which gave the valley an eerie, shadowed look.

Her nightly ritual began with a supersonic cry. The waves bounced around the land bowl bellow and returned. Nothing. There were no living things to be found in this area, so Noivern moved quickly to the next. The process was repeated every few hundred meters. Noivern would shriek, wait, and if nothing returned with signs of life, she would move on. The shadowy moon was perfectly over head now.

Having received nothing back again, Noivern was ready to swoop over to the next area. The night was beautiful. There was no wind which made flying a breeze. It was all she could ever wish for. The only thing missing from her life in that moment was someone to share it with. She rose and fell and rose and fell through the clear sky with no one around to see. Or, so she thought.

Being almost completely blind, Noivern had to rely on sound to guide her motions. It wasn't until the last possible second that she noticed an almost silent opponent closing in on her. She dashed out of the way of Noctowl's dive. Time seemed to slow down as their eyes met when he whooshed past her face.

Noctowl hovered a good distances from Noivern, waiting for her to make the first move. Both opponents took this time to check each other out. Noivern noted how the opponent looked through her sound waves. The tufts of feathers on his head almost looked like gigantic ears. And the way his wings curled at the end, they almost appeared as snarly claws.

It took her a moment to piece together the information, but it horrified her when she did. This was the monster the valley feared. She felt a cold lump form in her throat. Something primal in her made her screech in an attempt to scare her opponent off. Noctowl still fluttered in place, waiting for her to actually unleash an attack.

Noivern decided the best course of attack would be to screech, but actually use it as an attack this time. Noctowl didn't seem to mind the loud noise of the attack though. He kept flapping unfazed.

For his attack, Noctowl tried to use hypnosis. He locked eye contact with Noivern and let his eyes project hypnotizing rings that spun round and round. She didn't even feel drowsy from the attack. Now her turn again, she drew a power from deep inside and unleashed it in the form of dragon pulse. The stream of energy plowed into Noctowl at a high speed, not giving him the chance to evade. A critical hit left him unable to take anymore damage. His eyes fluttered shut and he began to plummet to the ground. Noivern didn't mean for the attack to cause such damage.

She couldn't just sit around and watch this happen, even if he was an opponent. She pursued his fainted body in a chase through the skies. The ground and its features grew exponentially larger and larger. She had hoped to be able to get under his body before reaching the earth so she could catch him without hurting him any further. That wasn't going to happen, they just simply did not have enough time.

She extended her claws towards Noctowl and grasped at his feet, too worried she would hurt him if she grabbed anywhere else. The panic inside her grew every time she snatched thin air. Time was running short. Eventually, she decided it was better to aim for anywhere on his body instead of just his talons. It was better if he was alive and injured rather than dead.

She snatched his body out of the air just a mere five meters in the air. Her heart hammered in her chest as she set Noctowl's body down. It only seemed to escalate as she thumped her body onto the ground. For the first few moments, she was in shock. She stared blankly ahead at a tree. As time passed, her nerves calmed down and she regained her wits. Noctowl was still passed out at her side. Recovering without any help didn't seem like a possibility for him.

Noivern sent out a supersonic screech. She noted how familiar the waves made the terrain out to be. This wasn't far from where she tried to befriend Sentret. Albeit being awkward on her feet, she shuffled around in the bushes until she found the berries from the previous night. She grabbed as many of the blue rejuvenating ones as she could spot in the dim lighting.

With the berries in tow, she shuffled back to where Noctowl lay. As gently as she could, she fed the berries to him one by one. Then, when she was out of berries, she waited and waited and waited. This game of waiting reminded her very much of the previous night, instead this time she had a fierce opponent passed out next to her instead of a harmless child.

Finally, Noctowl began to stir. He opened his eyes slowly, letting them adjust to the world again. When he was finally comfortable with the light, he gingerly rose to his feet, stumbled a bit, but was able to make it up without much of Noivern's help.

He looked at her with curiosity, then with recognition. His eyes still shone red like fire. He bowed to her in defeat and cooed softly. She returned the gesture as a sign of respect. He had been a worthy opponent. They met each others' eyes when they returned to their upright positions.

A single remaining blue berry sat between the two. Noivern pushed it towards Noctowl, and he pushed it right back. Noivern beamed at his gesture. She gulped down the berry and rose up into the sky. They both acknowledged the fact that it was time for them to go their separate ways. She flew off into the night sky alone yet again.

As she flew along, she couldn't help but notice a muffled noise behind her. It almost sounded like the muted flapping of feathers. She did a loop to get behind whatever might be following her. Noctowl's head spun as if separated from its body to stare directly behind him. He gave a happy expression and chirped cheerfully. Not at all surprised at who it was, Noivern returned the gesture of friendship. The two monsters of the valley flew alongside each other finally having found someone to be with.
