Unseeing Eyes
Rainkit snuggled into her mothers side, not wanting to wake up. It was comfy, nice, and warm were she was. "Come on Rainkit wake up, you can't just lay there your whole life." Her mother purred.
Mentally Rainkit sighed, she had been refusing to open her eyes for a long while now. She just had a feeling that if she did open her eyes...She couldn't really describe it. But...Cloudpetal was right. "Okay..I will mom." She mumbled. 'It's not that hard, just blink I guess.' She thought. She opened her eyes and saw....nothing. Everything was dark still! "Cloudpetal! I can't see!" She squealed, stumbling to her paws.
Cloudpetal didn't know what to do, her heart was racing. Her little Rainkit couldn't see! She grasped Rainkit's scruff and darted out of the den, racing across the camp to Krestralpeck's den. "Mom!" Rainkit mewed in surprise, suddenly she wasn't moving and now she was. Cloudpetal didn't answer and burst into the medicine cat den .
She set Rainkit down gently, "Kestralpeck! Rainkit can't see! What's wrong with my kit?!" She then demanded. As if expecting the Medicine Cat to know immediately what was wrong with her precious little one.
'What's going on!? What's happening!' Rainkit thought frantically. "Cloudpetal I'm scared!" She wailed, pressing herself against the ground. Against something she could feel, that was solid and steadying.
"Ahh everything will be alright Rainkit. Your fine, I'm right here." Cloudpetal said soothingly. Rainkit felt her pelt brush against something soft, and pressed against it. "I'm right here." Her mother whispered, realizing how much her actions had frighten Rainkit.
Kestralpeck padded closer to the tiny kit. "Alright Rainkit I need you to take three steps away from Cloudpetal alright?" Rainkit was honestly down right terrified at this point. 'You can do this, he'll figure out what's wrong and fix it.' She reassured herself. After a few moments she took a few hesitant steps forward. The yellow tom looked over Rainkit, gently prodding her occasionally. Rainkit was as stiff as a board, trying to hold completely still. He waved his paw in front of her face and her eyes didn't follow. "Cloudpetal, I'm afraid Rainkit is blind. There's nothing I can do." Kestralpeck said.
Terror flowed through Rainkit. "I-I'll n-never b-be a-able t-to s-see?" She stuttered. How could she be a warrior like this? Her dreams, and everything were coming crashing down.
"I'm afraid so." Kestralpeck whispered. He could see the dreams of this small kitten crushed in her blind eyes.
Cloudpetal was stunned. "You mean Rainkit can never become a warrior!?" She demanded. 'No!No!NO! I have to become a warrior! Why do I have to be blind?! Shineclan why!' Rainkit thought with despair.
The medicine cat hung his head and said nothing, not trusting himself to speak. Songpaw, his apprentice, stepped forward, "I don't think she'll be able to do the tasks of a warrior." She answered quietly.
"I wanna go back to the nursery." Rainkit whimpered. Her mind was in disarray, she didn't know what to do. Or what to think for that matter.
Cloudpetal gently grasped her little ones scruff and carried her back to the nursery. She padded into the den and set Rainkit in their nest. Her fluffy tail brought Rainkit to her belly and she curled around her kit. Rainkit was trembling, her entire world seemed to be collapsing. "I wanna be a warrior." She mumbled.
The grey-blue queen didn't know what to do. "You'll be great one day." She eventually whispered and began to groom her pelt.
Rainkit glanced upward, were she thought Cloudpetal was. "I will?" She asked. She was getting kinda sleepy.
"Yes my dear little Rainkit, no matter which path you follow." Cloudpetal assured her, and soon Rainkit was asleep. She carefully unraveled herself, careful not to wake Rainkit, and padded out of the den. The sun warmed her fur and a sigh escaped her. Groundkit and Dropkit were wrestling with Proudkit, Sandkit, and Firekit a bit away from the nursery. Their squeals and laughter ringing around the camp. Would Rainkit ever be able to really play with her littermates?
Her gaze wandered the camp searching for somecat. "Weathertail". She called and bounded over to him.
Weathertail was laying in a patch of sun next to the warriors den. "What is it?" He asked, getting to his paws.
Cloudpetal found that she couldn't speak. How does one express such things? "Rainkit opened her eyes today." She managed, looking up at her mate.
"That's wonderful! What color were her eyes?" Weathertail purred, rubbing up against his mate. She pulled away shaking her head. "What's wrong Cloudpetal?" He asked, now concerned.
"R-Rainkit's blind!" She snapped, burying her face into Weathertail's soft fur. Her tears catching on his fur.
Weathertail didn't know how to respond, how does a parent respond to this? His child, his little kitten, was blind. Would never be able to become a warrior. He had heard Rainkit go on and on about becoming a warrior ever since she could talk. The whole camp was silent, shocked by the news. There were other important roles in the clan that could be filled by these cats, but no other kit had ever wanted to be a warrior as much as young Rainkit seemed to. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the point still stood. "She'll be a fine medicine cat." He murmured into her fur, and together they both cried. Saddened by this turn of events.
