Backstories

Okay, this is a strong opinion of mine, and I've been thinking about this for a while.

A Backstory, what helps build the character into who they are in a present time of a book, both mentally and physically. There are some people who have a happy 'normal' backstory. Others are more dark.

Yes, I admit, backstories with unending trauma can be a little cringy and annoying, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be a thing. For example, Alexander Hamilton, if you listened to the musical, you know that the his life in the Caribbean wasn't that great. (I'm basing this info off of the First song because I'm not in the mood to spend half an hour looking through the book)  First his dad left, 2 years later, his mom died from sickness. When he moved in with his cousin, he committed suicide. Finally, when he was 17, a hurricane destroyed his town and he somehow survived to see the destruction.

I bet you if I took that backstory and put it in one of my characters, and someone who didn't know who Alexander Hamilton , let alone know that was a real story, they would say "Wow, that backstory is so dark and sounds fake for attention, add something happy in there."

Plus, I did some research for this, do you know how common some of these things can occur?

Divorce (info from 2000)= 2 per minute, but from studies, it's been gradually getting bigger. (Just in the us)

Orphans= 150 million in the world. (that's 20 million more than the population of Japan)

Homeless= 1.5 million kids are homeless each year in the us.

1 in 50 kids will experience a homelessness time in their life in the us.

Abused= Although it is decreasing, 683,000 children, or almost 1 in 100 children in the US, were abused in 2015.

Even though these topics are not good, and you shouldn't want someone to have a backstory of these, these things happen more often than some people think. You have to have some characters who have dealt with this before, and not all of them.

To make the backstory to be more understanding with the character, give them traits that would be caused by the backstory, but also balance it with good traits too.

I'm not saying to change your characters backstory completely and make 5 characters with severe ending traumatic backstories, I'm just saying that every kid has has at least 1 traumatic experience in their childhood, and to not have everything be sunshine and rainbows.

Example, my two main ocs, Holly, my catsona, and Jay, my persona, have my backstory, but their traumatic part of their childhood are ones that I could've gotten if it didn't go the way of did. Me, my dad left me when I was 7 ( I guess I'm Evan) and my mom worked as someone who basically wrote doctor reports that are decor and stuff so she stayed home.

Even though she worked a lot, because she stayed home, I got closer to me. Soon after,  she lost her job, leaving my sister being the only one who worked. My sister and I were really close (explaining Holly and Button's relationship) for being years apart. But I stayed close with my mom and sister and here I am today.

Holly's situation, to put it really brief because I'm planning to write a book about them, her dad divorced her mom, causing her Mom to have to get more jobs to help pay for everything .

Jay, idk if I'll end up writing about them or not, her parents stayed together, but their constant arguing really hurt her mentally.

This has been on my mind for a while so I'm sorry if it seems a bit different.
Anyways, have a great day and I hope you learn something or understand where I'm coming from at least.

Btw
Sorry about ranting about me, that was to explain the reason for some of my backstories.
