Chapter 2: Quake
Three chapters in and you got yourself a date. And get yourself into more shit. Wow
"Death does not wield a thin, long scythe. Or kill everything she walks on or touches. Rather, she wields a steel-barreled sword decorated with runes and skulls. The molten steel that comes out of that barrel not only destroys the body, but the soul as well." - Remnant, and The Deities Above It
Read at the end for notes.
The district surrounding the gates of the abandoned city looked worst than the city itself. With the tunnel sealed off, this place is nothing more of a silent tomb.
According to Death, the inhabitants made derelict villages underground when the surface was overrun by the Grimm. The city had a second chance, despite their recent loss above ground, but a mining incident caused a pocket of hibernating Grimm to wake up via explosion. Which was unfortunate because it was located near the tunnel and the city. When the tunnel was sealed, the city was lost, and it became a tomb. All of the military equipment during the crisis was transported to these villages to establish a new HQ. Which is why Death and Life is taking (Y/N) there.
"Recently, the Grimm roaming around the outskirts of Glenn and the City of Vale are getting lesser by the day. Some of my servants reported that the Grimm began avoiding the abandoned villages in the region for unknown reasons. Speaking of villages, there has been a mass migration to all four Kingdoms recently. The mortals reported that they have witnessed their villages been burnt down by strange creatures that "didn't belong in this world". Every day, the population of all the kingdoms in Remnant are dropping." Death sighed in annoyance.
"There is no clear motive as to why this is happening. The gods are nervous. Our brothers have no clue what is going on and are not interested about what's happening. Everything is falling into chaos and we can't just stand here and watch as this world dies for the 3rd time."
"And that's where I come in?"
Death hummed in agreement.
"Yes. And you probably know that this is a big gamble. It could be a matter that can be stopped within a few months or a developing world catastrophe. If it's the former. Maybe we can talk to my brother about keeping you out of that coffin for a while." Death replied with a wryly smile on her face. Life nodded with excitement.
(Y/N) chuckled at that.
"Don't keep your hopes up, you two." He said before walking down the tunnel with the two women following behind him.
~~~~
It took some time for the three to reach the underground section of the city. The walk to the city was quiet and depressing. There was no Grimm patrolling the tunnels at all. It was quite strange, (Y/N) thought. The tunnel has been sealed off for about a decade or some years now. Either someone blew through four miles of pure concrete to kill everything here or there are survivors that still remain in this broken city. Which he highly doubt since nobody can last long in this hellhole.
During that time, the three found a convoy full of abandoned tanks and IFV's. Upon closer look, most of them were damaged beyond repair. This began to worry (Y/N), Life and Death, as this doesn't match the Grimm's fighting patterns. They would always disable the vehicle before Silver swarms break the hatch using its superheated barbs to cook the crew inside. But this, this looks like something effortlessly ripped the tank open. Beowolves or Beringels can't pierce through thick anti-rocket armor like that.
Bodies of both civilian and soldiers are present. This time, they actually looked like they belonged to Vale and Atlas.
'Why would Atlas be in a Vale settlement in the first place?' He thought as you began looking for an intact recording chip.
Before you can go looking for one, Life tugs the sleeves of his leather jacket. (Y/N) turns around and saw her handing you a recording chip with a big smile on her face. He smiled back and looked down to see a rotting head on her other hand. His smile didn't waiver but a bead of sweat rolled down your face. (Y/N) took the chip and put it in his jacket's breast pocket.
"Thanks. The search was going to be a lost cause anyways." He said as he looked over at the mangled bodies varying in sizes. Most of them were decapitated, which is gruesome.
"All we need is to get to the abandoned HQ and play those chips. Maybe there is more in the underground city, but at least we can try." Death said, getting a nod from (Y/N) and Life.
~~~~
And that's how you ended up in the underground city. Being chased by creatures that weren't made by both light and dark, but born from chaos that is meant to destroy all.
Demons.
"FUCK THIS! FUCK YOU! WHY ARE THEY HERE?!" (Y/N) shouts as he blasts an imp using Heartbreaker at point blank range.
Death used her double barreled shotgun (chambered in eight gauge, too!) to sweep the hordes of fodder demon.
Life, however, just rips and tears her way through them. Not bothered by the blood she's spilling.
This is proven to be futile as they began replacing their numbers at a more rapid pace. (Y/N) then realized what was the problem and sent a Displacer Punch. Sending a lethal and non-lethal shockwave to kill those who are close enough and stun those who are out of the kill zone.
"We have to find the Gore Nest! NOW!" He told the two before they retreated to find the Gore Nest. (Y/N) can only ask himself this one question.
'Where in the fuck did it all go wrong?'
Moments before catastrophe...
After finding two more recording chips from two POI (one of them was lying around a command post's desk and the other was in a cultist's house). The three went inside the HQ and looked for an intact helmet to watch the recording from. Again, it took some time to find a working helmet and when you did. The three sat down side by side as you put the helmet on display mode and set the helmet to face the wall. The first chip (Y/N) put was the chip found in a command post at the center of the city.
It went along the lines like this:
"This is not looking good, Lieutenant. Our soldiers are running low on supplies and their morale is getting dragged to the dirt. We have to do something about this new threat or else we will all die."
"Sir, we have a solution, but you won't like what it is."
"Anything will help, Lieutenant. As long it can save lives and relieve the boys of some work. I'll take it."
The Lieutenant hands a file to the CO. He began sifting through the papers before looking at the Lieutenant.
"Are you serious? This is a violation against the Holy Codes! I'm sure there has to be something other than... this!"
The Lieutenant shook his head.
"He might me our only chance against this new threat, sir. If we all die here. No one will ever hear our story, and Remnant might be doomed for good this time."
The CO looked at him with a grim expression. He sighs and sets the file aside.
"I hate to say this, but you have my approval. I want your men to be in this very tent at 2100, roger?"
"Roger, sir."
The recording ends abruptly.
~~~~
"..."
"Are you okay, (Y/N)? You look a bit pale..." Life spoke for the first time, concerned for (Y/N)'s well being.
The large man held his head. He felt bad for the people if he didn't feel bad enough. They were forced to violate the Holy Codes to save themselves from danger. But a new threat? What threat?
...
Wait a minute...
"Hey! Snap out of it!" Life spoke again as she punches his arm. Snapping out of his thoughts, he looked at Life's concerning gaze and looks to your right and saw Death frowning.
"I'm okay. Just thinking about that one. That's all." He replied before taking out the chip and replaced it with another. It was the one they found at the cultist's house. The record went static for a moment before playing.
"My CO has given me the thumbs up. I hope this plan of yours work."
The cultist leader smiles gently.
"We are his devoted followers. He might not know of our existence, but we worship him for his balance in both aspects of light and dark. Summoning him back to the realm of the living is both a blessing and a privilege to witness."
The Lieutenant gave him a weird look behind his helmet.
"Where's the rest of your... proselytes? Are you the only one?"
The leader shakes his head.
"They should be on their way to your base. I let them know about this ahead of time. They are all excited to do this. We have been waiting for this day."
"Sure. Just go ahead and grab your things and get into the truck. Time is of the essence."
The leader bowed and walked out of the living room to retrieve necessary items needed for the ritual.
"If you're hearing this, Oum. This better be fucking worth it."
End of recording
~~~~
(Y/N) takes the helmet and throws the chip away. He sighs and puts the chip that was pulled from the wrecked convoy. He already knew what happened, but how it all went wrong... seems... wrong.
Putting the chip inside the helmet, the chip started to play the recording. This time, static was garbling the words for the first few seconds until it cleared out. Instead of the Lieutenant that previously started the mission, it was a new voice that came through. It belonged to a private escorting the cultists to their objective.
~~~~
"Are you sure we can trust the Grimm here, sir? I feel like they would turn on us any time soon."
"No, Private. They either know what's inside that coffin or they know that we're trying to survive out here like what they're doing. Maybe both. But I guess we need all the hands we can get. Even the ones we used to fight off."
The Private looked at the Grimm around him. Beringels, Beowolves, Deathstalkers. It's strange to him how he is able to walk with these nightmarish creatures, side by side, working together to kill whatever came here. After all, they are leagues worse than the Grimm.
One of the leading Beowolves stopped. The Lieutenant signaled the whole convoy to stop by using the hand signal. The next scene played out like a movie. The leading Beowolf and the Lieutenant started walking ahead of the convoy. They both stopped, approximately 15 meters ahead of the private's location before the Lieutenant turned on his high-grade flashlight that is integrated on the left side of his helmet.
What came next was when things went south because they found four. Four hulking goat-like creatures that are twice the size of Beringels. Two of them were grey with orange eyes, their skin looked like it was covered by obsidian, and they had a pair of sharp arm blades doused by lava. Two of them were red and had green eyes, but their lower half is furry like a goat. Unlike the other two, they have green flames on the palm of their claws.
The four behemoths began to step forward while the soldiers drew their guns and the Grimm took on their battle stances. The goat-like behemoths roared at the convoy before releasing pure hot fireballs colored in red and green. The red fireballs were able to land on their respective targets, the tanks, and was able to melt through their armor and kill the crew members inside.
The green fireballs landed on two Beringels, turning them instantly to dust. They all began to attack these new and powerful foes. Which to the soldier's shock, their weapons have to effect on them. The only weapon that was able to do damage was the heavy machine guns (12.7 x 108mm) from the IFV's and a surviving member of one of the melted tanks. But it wasn't enough and it didn't seem to stop the creatures from attacking both soldiers and Grimm.
"Holy shit!" The Private shouted as he witness the goat-like creature crush a Deathstalker with his hooves before crushing a Beowolf skull with its hand. The fiery ones threw fireballs at the unsuspecting soldiers and ended up slagging them. The tanks began to fire shells at them, but were unable to land a direct hit since they were going fast. TOO fast.
Suddenly, screams were heard from the back of the convoy. Turning around, the private could see the freaks that attacked the city began attacking the cultists.
"AMBUSH! AMBUSH WE'RE BEING HIT FROM THE BACK! PROTECT THOSE CULTISTS!" A Sergeant called out as he began to shoot the freaks trying to attack the cultists.
"What the fuck are these things made out of?! They don't even fucking flinch!" The Private shouted as he unloaded a magazine of the small brown creatures he like to call Imps.
"Stop talking and start shooting! I don't care about what they- AH!" One of the privates screamed before being tackled by an Imp. Three other imps ran at him before brutally tearing him apart with their claws while he screamed in agony.
"NO!" The Private shouted as he threw an incendiary grenade at the group of preoccupied imps. The grenade exploded and covered the imps with fire from head to toe, yet they can still move, with no problem whatsoever.
The Private could feel his heart beating faster as the demons began to overwhelm the convoy. Luckily, the hulking goat-like creatures were already dealt with by the tanks. Unfortunately, they were overrun by thin, winged creatures with bladed hands as they sliced through the tank armor like it was butter and brutalized the crew members. Some of the soldiers ran out of ammo for their guns and fought with their swords, but were overwhelmed by the ferocity of these creatures.
The Grimm despite their numbers, were being overwhelmed by them as more variants were being thrown at them. A group of purple, humanoid creature the size of body builders brutally killed the Beringels with their powerful punches and stomped the Death Stalker's head.
"EVERYONE MOVE THE OBJECTIVE UP TO THE FRONT! WE ARE OUT OF HERE! MOVE UP! I REPEAT MOVE UP!" The Private heard the Lieutenant yell through the comms as he began to suppress fire unto the creatures.
Some moved up, but some stayed behind to buy the convoy some time to escape the ambush. The same happened to the Grimm, but the majority of them tried to fight off the creatures due to how powerful they convey their hate towards humanity and other life forms.
The Private was about to move up until a winged creature cut his arm off, dropping his gun. He screamed as blood began to pour out of the open wound. Before he could anything, the winged creature dashed in front of him and wildly swung its bladed hands. The private fell backwards and looked up as his camera feed began to fail. The last thing the camera recorded was the shrieks of the creatures before the recording ended.
~~~~
'I knew it.' (Y/N) thought as he clenches his fist.
That familiar hate. That familiar rage. He can feel his blood boiling thinking of them. Like a kettle boiling water, his rage will boil to the point he never talked. It happened last time, he won't do it again.
Life was already stroking his forearm to comfort him. She knows what he's gone through, especially the last part. That's why she rarely speaks now, and is more violent than ever. Even Death couldn't reach that level of anger and rage, even if she's mad.
"Let's just get this over with." (Y/N) grumbled as he put the recording in.
~~~
Right at the beginning, the feed is interrupted by heavy static. It was the Lieutenant again. This time, he was now resting against the wall of the chapel. Tired, beaten, broken, and battered. He made an effort to stand up, only to fall on his ass again.
"Are you sure you're going to be alright, sir?" The cult leader asked the wounded man.
"W-What do you think?" He coughed. "I am covered in burns. I almost got gutted, decapitated, eviscerated, and blown up by those damn bastards. They tore down my men in seconds and shrug off attacks from the Grimm and they still keep coming. What the fuck are they?" The Lieutenant asked.
The cult leader pursed his lips before he sighed.
"Those creatures are what we call Demons. They are our worst enemy. Not the Grimm. They are. Like the Grimm, they do not care for their own kin, they do not care about who they face. The only difference is that the Demons have a strong hatred towards humanity and they will not stop until all life on Remnant is under their rule or dead. They will turn this place into lava and brimstone and absorb this planet into their realm." He explained in a serious manner.
The Lieutenant's eyes widen under the helmet as he looked at the leader and the coffin.
"That is his purpose. Any threat bigger than the Grimm appears in this planet. He will be awoken from his deep sleep. If he cannot stop this threat, Remnant has no hope for survival." The cult leader muttered the motto.
"Now if you'll excuse me. We must commence the ritual. Time is of the essence." He said as he joined the rest of his followers.
As the cultists began to chant, the Lieutenant felt something was wrong. The Grimm outside the chapel fell silent. His remaining men on the line fell silent. No chatter, no feedback, no response, no anything. Something's happening.
The Lieutenant then ordered one of the PFC to peek out the door to check outside. When the PFC checked, he harshly grabbed by the helmet by a large clawed hand and seconds later was thrown inside in the form of his lower body. Ten Imps and two Hell Knights came barging through the chapel.
The Lieutenant, his remaining soldiers and the Grimm tried to fight off the small hunting party. Only to be slaughtered by their sharp claws and jagged teeth. The last thing the Lieutenant saw was the demons attacking the cultist before the recording cuts off abruptly.
~~~~
(Y/N) grabbed the helmet and crushed it with his hands. He got up from his seat and kicked the door open, removing it from its hinges. The two goddess quickly followed him until they heard a gunshot in the hallway. Turning to the sound, both woman saw (Y/N) looking down on his first prey item: an blasted Imp. Suddenly, the wall to his left was bust open by a Hell Knight, looking for a chance to kill (Y/N), but was met with a face full of buckshot. The demon was staggered by the force of the attack, making it hold his face.
(Y/N) used this as a window of opportunity to kick the Hell Knight to the floor. He did not waste anytime getting on top of it with his foot on its chest and his fist balled up and aimed for the demon's face. The Hell Knight screeched in hatred before its skull was crushed, followed by a satisfying crunch.
(Y/N) stood there with his fist and clothes covered in blood. His breathing became more erratic as his rage began taking a hold of him. Pumping his shotgun, he went to a random room and looked outside of the window. Only to see hordes of fodder demons charging where he is at.
"Damn it!" He shouted in frustration and punches the window. Just as he hopped out of the shattered window. Life and Death entered the room and ran to see how their enraged and angry friend was doing. Only to see him blast demons with his pump shotgun and tearing them apart with his bare hands if they got close enough.
Death looked at her sister in the face and nodded as she took out her sawed off shotgun decorated with runes and a skull mounted on the sights. She loaded two shells before firing a hook towards one of the demons. Life jumped after her and stomped a poor Imp into mush. Their holy work has begun.
Street after street, they were met with strong resistance from the demons that roamed the dead city. They also met some Grimm that were fending them off for territory, but they were always ending up on the losing side. The ones that you rescued eventually joined (Y/N)'s side. Until they were ambushed by one of the demon's scouting party consisting of fodder demons like Imps and Gargoyles to Heavy and Super Demons like the Mancubis, Revenants, Archviles and Barons.
The trio immediately retreated, knowing that (Y/N) doesn't have his full arsenal. The best tactic here is to lose them, but how are they going to lose an enemy that is practically crawling in every corner of this dead fucking city?
And that's how they came to be in this situation. Annoyed, and irritated as they tried witting down their number to no effect.
~~~~
"I knew there were Gore Nests lying around here somewhere! They were using this place as their base of operations!" (Y/N) hissed as he saw a field of welded flesh and guts. Blood ran like a river, the Nest glowed bright orange like the sun.
"Is this how they manage to get their numbers up in such a short time?" Death asked him.
"Yes, and they'll do it by the thousands if they keep turning this city into red paste and blood." He replied as he pumped his shotgun again. Before he could inflict more pain, Death held his arm and stopped him.
"Wait, I have something to give you before we get out there." Death said to him, earning her a tilted head coming from him.
She let go of him and began to summon something from the void. The darkness culminated into both of her hands. It twists and turns into various shapes before turning into a double barrel similar to her own, but it was decorated with different runes and had your insignia instead.
"My followers kept it clean and in pristine condition. They said that they have an upgrade for it, but we can discuss that later after we're out of here." She explained as she stretched out her arms and presented it to (Y/N). He quickly took the punt gun and examined it with awe. Loading it with two shells, he turned to the goddess with a satisfied smirk on his face.
"Remind me to give your tits some extra attention once we're out of this mess, will you? Matilda" He asked smoothly as he mentioned her nickname/pet name. He got a reply in the form of a punch to his face.
"I swear you always say the wrong things at the wrong time!" Death, actually Matilda, hissed at (Y/N). While Matilda sent him an icy glare, she couldn't deny the warmth spreading throughout her body. She can never get tired of him, he was basically a part of her life after all. Thinking of all those memories that she made with him made that warmth get hotter.
Meanwhile, Life crossed her arms and huffed as she turned away from their disgusting romantic moment. Not fair, she thought. Her sister gave him one of his favorite and she's here stuck with none, but a light bulb moment came over her. Life carelessly tapped him in the shoulders and put on a big smile.
(Y/N) looked at her and cocked an eyebrow, "Now what do you have for me? I know that big smile of yours tells me that you have something."
Life turned around and presented him with a pair of red and yellow gauntlets. Each fingertips had sharpened tips and the palms were smooth and leather like. (Y/N) gave her a big smile in return before taking it and equipped it rather hastily. Hidden lines around the gauntlets crackled orange as the gauntlet charged up with Argent Energy. Once he felt the gauntlet was done charging up, (Y/N) turned to Life, who was poking her two index fingers together.
"It's a threesome tonight, Astrid. Guaranteed." He said with a shit eating grin. Astrid's eyes glowed yellow as she hungrily looked at him and her sister. Death just ended up punching him in the arm again, her pale cheeks turning red.
(Y/N) gave both of them a wink before turning towards the field of Gore Nests. He wasted no time running towards it and ripping the heart off before emitting an ear splitting and spine chilling howl before everything went loose. During all of this, you smiled. As you point your steel-barreled sword towards a screeching Imp.
"I'm back, bitches."
Author's Comment: Wow. A huge jump on word count for this chapter. I swear I didn't plan for that to happen, but I couldn't help myself to be a little more detailed. The next chapter should finish up the Prologue and Act I should be next. Starring your favorite characters.
