Chapter two
"Oh yeah right!" Yellow gasped, "Bianca is so clumsy! She'll never make it" she said with confidence as she, Hilda, and Lyra walked to their gym class.
"Sure she isn't well coordinated," Hilda said, pulling her dark brown hair into its usual ponytail "But she's got spunk, and since we're down two girls, I'd say she's our best bet"
Yellow snorted, "As if" she snapped, taking her phone out and tapping away at the screen.
Lyra rolled her eyes, "Last time I checked, Hilda was captain and not you blondie" She snapped.
"Whatever...you couldn't even make the team" Yellow hissed.
Lyra narrowed her eyes and opened her mouth to speak, but Yellow cut her off, changing the subject.
"Oh Hilda! Do tell us about your new man!"
Hilda blushed, "Oh come on Yellow, it's nothing!"
"Oh it's not nothing if you're blushing!" Yellow accused.
Hilda sighed, "We couldn't date even if it was something" she said, "Our families hate each other"
"Aw it's forbidden love!" Lyra chirped.
"There's no love!" Hilda denied, her face as red as a stop sign.
Lyra and Yellow giggled, "Sure there isn't" Lyra teased, rolling her eyes.
Hilda grunted and crossed her arms, "Whatever. Let's just get this last period over with. I've got a lot to do, but I'm glad you two are going to help me"
Lyra cringed, "Um...about that...I'm actually busy after school today" she said.
Hilda looked at her friend in shock, "What?!" She exclaimed, "You promised you'd help! What could you possibly be doing?"
"Gold" Yellow suggested, snickering.
Lyra snorted, "Gold? Yeah right! Never!"
"Ahem!" Hilda interrupted, "What are you doing after school?"
"I've...got work today" Lyra lied.
"I thought you didn't work on Thursdays" Hilda said, raising an eyebrow.
The trio made their way into the gym, heading to the locker room to change into their gym uniforms.
Lyra laughed nervously, "Turns out they need me today. It was a last minute schedule change. Sorry Hilda!"
Hilda sighed in frustration, "It's fine. Yellow and I can handle it by ourselves"
"What? No way she gets out of it that easy!" Yellow retorted.
"Do we have a problem?" Hilda asked, sending a glare at Yellow.
Yellow visibly flinched, "N-No!"
"Good"
Lyra snickered.
Yellow narrowed her eyes at Lyra, "Shut up, loser"
~~~
Lyra quickly changed back into her regular school uniform after gym class, leaving Hilda and Yellow behind. She rushed to the library, making sure none of her other friends saw her.
Sure, she loved her friends! But if they saw her getting help, they'd know how dumb she truly was. She'd never hear the end of it! Or if Gold saw her with Silver...
Lyra found Silver at the same table he was at yesterday. She scurried over to the table and took the seat next to him.
"Hey!" Lyra chirped.
"What did you need help with?" Silver asked with no enthusiasm.
Lyra laughed nervously, "Um...everything?" She admitted.
"Everything?"
"Everything" Lyra confirmed, sighing.
Silver groaned, "Well I guess we'll be here awhile"
Lyra smiled apologetically, "Sorry"
"Whatever" Silver grumbled, rolling his eyes and pulling their math textbook out of his bag. Lyra pulled out her math notebook which contained her homework.
Silver began explaining everything their teacher had taught over the course of that week. Lyra tried her best to wrap her head around what he was saying, but Silver might as well had been speaking a different language.
"Got it?" Silver asked once he was finished.
"Can I be honest?" Lyra asked.
"Sure"
"Not a single word of that made sense. Explain it again?" She requested.
Silver groaned and explained the entire lesson again, slower this time.
"It's easy," he said, "We learned this in Algebra two. You passed Algebra two, right?"
Lyra smiled sheepishly, "Well...kind of..."
Silver raised an eyebrow, "Kind of?"
"I passed with a D minus. I also cheated on my final" she revealed.
"What? How did you not get caught?"
"Well if you put the answers under your shirt, the staff isn't technically allowed to check there" Lyra shrugged.
"Classy" Silver sighed.
"It worked, didn't it?" Lyra chuckled.
Silver flipped through the pages of the textbook, trying to think of a way to teach Lyra enough math to pass their next test. Traditional methods clearly weren't working, so he would have to get a little creative.
Silver snatched Lyra's notebook, "Here- let's try this" he suggested, drawing a few pictures along with the problems and equations. He saw Lyra's eyes light up as things seemed to click in her brain.
After fifteen minutes, Lyra had finished the homework, mostly correctly.
"I did it!" Lyra squealed. The librarian shushed her. Lyra blushed and spoke quietly, "Thank you Silvey"
Silver frowned, "Don't call me that" he hissed.
"Why? Does it bother you?" Lyra wondered.
"Yes"
"Oh okay, Silvey" She teased, giggling.
"Stop it" He growled.
"I'm not gonna stop," Lyra chimed, "You night as well just let it happen"
"That's not something anyone wants to hear" Silver muttered, pulling a few papers out of his bag. He handed the freshly stapled papers to Lyra.
"What's this?" She asked.
"You said you'd help me with my essay" Silver told her, "I want you to read it and look for mistakes"
"I already see like, five, and I'm just glancing at it"
Heat rose to Silver's face, "Whatever!" He whisper-yelled, "Just go through it"
Lyra mouthed an 'okay' and grabbed a red pen from her bag. She circled, crossed out, or wrote notes next to mistakes she found, and by the time Silver got it back, it looked like the paper had committed a mass murder.
Silver frowned at the paper, "There can't be this much wrong..."
"Well to begin with," Lyra said, clicking her pen over and over again, "Your thesis makes no sense. You also don't know how to cite your quotes correctly. And your grammar is trash"
"Thanks..." Silver grumbled.
"No prob! I wrote some tips on the bottom of the last page. They may help you out" she said, packing her things and standing up.
As she slung her backpack over her shoulders, she asked, "Need a ride?"
Silver gave her a brisk 'No' and turned his attention back to his essay.
"Same time tomorrow?" Lyra asked.
Silver looked up at her, "Yeah sure. I should probably teach you how to multiply past seven" he teased.
Lyra glared, "I can do the tens and elevens" She grumbled, walking off.
Silver snickered and turned to the last page of the essay. He stared at the page and blinked in surprise. Where Lyra said she had written tips, she had put a phone number. Along with the number wrote, "Don't be afraid to ask questions, Silvey XP"
~~~
"So you have her number now?" Leaf's voice asked through the phone.
"Yup" Silver confirmed, typing away on his computer, fixing the things Lyra told him to.
"Are you...gonna use it?" Leaf asked quietly.
Silver shrugged, "Don't know" he admitted, "Hey, but you can't tell anyone I'm helping her"
"Why not?"
"Because if Gold finds out, he'll have my head"
Leaf grew silent on the other end.
"You okay, Green?" Silver asked.
"Yeah" Leaf said, "Just picturing you getting your ass beat by Gold"
Silver chuckled, "Oh we all know I would beat Gold in a fight. I'm ninety percent sure even the golden boy knows that"
Leaf laughed on the other end, "Alright alright, whatever helps you sleep at night"
Silver, satisfied with the amount of changes he had made in the essay, shut his computer. He took Leaf off of speaker phone and held his phone up to his ear.
"I'm going to bed. See ya tomorrow" He said.
"Night Silver"
"Night Green"
He hung up.
