24. Keith- We Meet Again

I was a stowaway, living in the dry desert, near a space facility called the Galaxy Garrison. I had no contact with anyone, ever since Iverson personally kicked me out of the Garrison. Stupid one eye.

To be honest, life was looking down upon me. I mean, I've been getting these strange signals from the caves, and I don't know what they are. There are definitely two giant machines there, and I'm not going to go alone.

It was just a normal day in my shack that I had built, salvaging spare parts from the market I needed to go to. Evidently, someone thought that they could just barge in my home. I grabbed the knife from my boot and slipped on a bandana.

"Hello?" they called. A male? How could he have gotten here? I lunged from the corner and tackled him to the ground. He grunted from the impact as I held my knife to his neck.

"Who are you?!" I demanded, pressing the blade lightly on his skin, "Tell me answers. Who are you, and what are you doing here?" He looked surprised.

"Let me go first."

"No." He sighed.

"The name's Keith Kogane, and I got booted from the Garrison. I didn't have anywhere to go, so I just... ended up here." I sighed in reluctance, but let him go.

"Sorry about the harsh introduction. My name is (Y/N). I built this shack. I also got booted from the Garrison. Iverson, that old prune, kicked me out," I said, reaching one hand out. He took it and shook it.

"Do you want to stay for the time being, or just go somewhere else?" I asked, putting my knife back into my boot, and pulling down my bandana.

"If you could grant me hospitality, I'd be glad to stay."

"Granted, mullet." I snapped my fingers. He sighed in relief.

"Hungry? Thirsty? I have water and some food, if you'd like." I got a cup of water and two pieces of bread with some spread for him. He gulped and wolfed it down like he hadn't gotten a good meal for weeks.

"Slow down or you'll get a stomach-ache," I chuckled, sitting on the counter. He smiled lightly at me. Keith noticed the board of trackings.

"What's this?" he asked, wiping his mouth.

"I detected dome weird signals from a cave over there. I built some magnetic mice that could track metal, and all of them had gotten stuck in the same spot in a cave. I'm too scared to go down there alone," I said, eyebrows furrowing, "Besides, I'm happy here. I don't need anything else." Keith frowned a little.

"I could go with you." I laughed.

"Maybe some other day, mullet." I hopped off the counter and walked outside. I felt the ground harden up under my feet. I sighed. It was always like this, I don't know why. The ground produced more and more cracks until a small flower sprung up out of the ground.

"H-How did you do that?" I turned to face Keith.

"I don't know, actually. It's been happening ever since I came here. Ever since I felt the waves of power radiating from that cave," I explained, pointing towards the mountains. Keith chuckled and sat down on the porch, looking at the sunset. I followed his course of actions.

"I miss my family," I suddenly said, without thinking, "Ever since they died, I'd never really thought of anyone else. Never really... Had friends, you know? My brother, Steven, was the best military leader you would have ever known. He died, in a war between us and another country. He died protecting us.

"My mother and father, they were great as well. My mother was hard-working, independent. My father was the money-maker of the house. He earned money for us to keep living. I wanted to be just like them. I promised that I would graduate from the Garrison. I promised them that I would become one of the greatest astronauts ever, going to places no one ever has. Well, look at me now, Keith. Stuck in the middle of a desert, kicked out of the Garrison, barely surviving.

"I just wanted to make them proud. I wanted to be a daughter that they could say, 'Hey, that's my little girl, up in space.' and '(Y/N) (L/N), that's our perfect daughter. She's the best.' I let my pride get the best of me. I let my temper take control of my mind. I felt like a failure." Without knowing, fresh tears were flowing down my cheeks.

Keith hesitated, but used one hand to cup my cheek, his thumb wiping away my tears.

"I'm sorry you have to see me like this, Keith."

"It's okay, it's okay," he reassured, kissing the back of my hand, "Remember, you have me now. Don't feel alone. I know what it feels like to become someone that has nothing but an old knife." I laughed a little, wiping my own tears away.

"Hey, for your information, I don't have just an old knife. I have some dignity left as well," I snapped, smirking. He grinned murderously.

"Oh, yeah? Well I'm about to have a new skull to my collection. Come here!" he said, running after me. I laughed and ran away. We eventually got tired and sat back down on the porch.

"I swear, your name sounds familiar, Keith," I panted, wiping my forehead.

"I was thinking the same thing," he breathed, tired from running around all evening.

"What's your last name?"

"Kogane." I yelped and moved back.

"K-Kogane?" I shrieked, having wide-eyes. He looked at me.

"What?" Keith asked, running a hand through his head. I blushed immensely. I breathed in and out rapidly.

"I-I think you may not remember me, but just to be sure..." I let my hair down from its usual ponytail. He gasped and covered his mouth, face as red as his jacket.

"(L/N)??!" Keith yelled, jumping back as well. I nodded as I blushed.

"Y-You've grown since the last time I've seen you..." he said nervously. I bit my lip.

"Y-You too..." I said back, playing with the bleached tips of my hair. Okay, let me set this straight. Back at the Garrison, when we were really young, people used to tease me about how Keith and I liked each other. And to be fair, we did. A lot. But about five years ago, when I got suspended, we had to leave each other. It was heartbreaking. But now, we're here, right before each other.

"S-So... Nice meeting you again, (Y/N)..." Keith said awkwardly.

"Y-Yeah... Great mullet you have there, it suits you." I heard a small fit of laughter erupt from Keith.

"H-Hey! It was a compliment!" I yelled, hitting him on the shoulder. He rolled his eyes and grabbed my arm, pulling me in close.

"I can't believe it's actually you, (Y/N)..." he whispered, his purple eyes looking into mine. I smiled and kissed his nose.

"I believe it's actually you as well, Keith Kogane." I leaned forwards and captured his lips in mine. He kissed back, grabbing my waist and pulling me forwards into his arms.

"Mmph~" My fingers played with his soft, raven hair as he traced circles on my hips. I parted away from the kiss, pinkish blush dusted all around my face.

"I missed you and your sweet kisses," Keith purred. I giggled and hugged him.

"I knew that."
