iii ;; the indifference of celestial bodies

THE SUNA HOUSEHOLD is physically characterized as messy. It would be extremely messy if it weren't for the Suna twins' Aunt Remi coming over every week to check up on her brother and his kids, and helping to organize the apartment complex as much as possible.

Remi came over that Wednesday, greeting her brother and his kids with a warm hug. The family happily spent their night watching Studio Ghibli's Ponyo before tucking the kids in good night. With the kids asleep, the original Suna siblings trekked back to the living room where they plopped down on the couch, TV still playing, sharing idle conversation.

"How're you and 'Samu doing?"

"We're fine, thanks. We've been thinking about having our own kids, actually."

"Oh shit, really?" Suna perked up, eyeing his sister with warm yet detached interest. "That's great, Remi. Congrats."

"Thanks, Rin. Oh, and who's that Ms. Tsukimi Riko and Riku are talking about?"

"Ah, it's their sub at school. Apparently Riku has a crush on her or something, and both kids are really sweet on her. They want her to come to their birthday party during Spring Break."

Remi whistled. "Ohh, shit. Their teacher, huh? Do they realize she legally can't come?"

"Nah, I said yes. I'll get her to come."

"Rin, the fuck?!" Remi laughed. "Dude, you know it's, like, illegal for her to come, right?"

"Ok and?? If anyone asks, we'll just bullshit something and say she's an old friend of ours or something. The twins say she should be our age, anyways."

"Really? Sheesh. Have you met her before?"

"Nah. Apparently she hopped in because their original teacher, Mr. Suga or something is on paternity leave, I think."

"Ohh, congrats to him!"

"Yeah."

The pair sat in silence for a moment, both lost in their own thoughts, absently watching the ads that were playing on the TV.

"Hey, Remi. Have you heard of that new star they've discovered?" The oldest Suna offered up a topic.

Remi looked over at her brother with no particular surprise. She always knew he was an avid stargazer despite his nonchalant disposition. "Not really," she answered truthfully. "Tell me about it?"

She watched as her older brother shifted in his position on the couch to get more comfortable. "They say it popped up near Sadalsuud and Bunda–"

"Speak Japanese, please," interrupted Remi, raising a laugh from her brother.

"They say it popped up near two other stars," Rintarou rolled his eyes. "It was really sudden, and no one can find a plausible explanation for it. It's also not exactly a star–it's kind of... an anomaly?? I don't know how else to put it. There's something there, but the original discoverer found it only because she realized the stars around it were reacting weirdly to something. Then she realized that... it was there," he finished with an exhale.

Remi listened with puffed cheeks, deflating them as her brother finished his short monologue. "So what is it if not a star?" she asked.

Rintarou shrugged, turning back to face the TV. "Well, it's just not behaving like a normal star, behaving in the lightest sense of the word. Looking at it now, it could just be any regular old star. It's just how it showed up. Do you see what I'm getting at?"

Remi nodded slowly; the same pace that matched that of her comprehension. "So they use 'star' loosely because... stars are made a certain way and have specific qualities, while this... thing was not made in that certain way, but has the required qualities?" she summarized.

Snapping his fingers, Rintaoru nodded in confirmation. "Exactly. No one knows what's going on–everyone's waiting for the astronomer that discovered it to post her reports and stuff."

Suna Remi tilted her head curiously to the side. "It's a girl?" she was pleasantly surprised. Rintarou nodded, now semi-focused on what the TV was currently playing. "Yeah... I forgot her name though. Something about the moon, and... whatever."

Remi chuckled softly at her brother's antics, then turned to watch the TV as well. It was playing a commercial for Galactic Wish. Listening to the narrator's voice, Remi laughed harshly.

"Christ. Who the hell has the money to buy a fuckin' star?" she raised her palms as a gesture of annoyance. "I mean, does anyone really just have money sitting on the side, waiting to be used to buy a star?"

Rintarou rolled his head to the side, stretching his neck. A wry smile wound itself around his lips. "To quote 'Samu, it's giving 'that awkward moment when you have five Californian penthouses and no one to share them with'."

Throwing her head back, Remi laughed freely. But with that action, she missed the thoughtful look that had passed over her brother's face as he turned back to watch the commercial.

"A star, huh..?" he mumbled.

. . .

"Augh...What the fuck?" Tsukimi narrowed her viridescent green eyes in that pretty way she did as she woke up that morning, eyes squinting from sleep as she turned to glare up at the ceiling.

"Hmm? What's wrong, baby?" Her boyfriend's sleepy voice drawled out as he stirred awake. Tsukimi stifled a chuckle at his tired disposition. "I dunno, Keiji," she sighed, turning around and tracing circles on his bare chest with her finger. "I think I was dreaming something that was kinda weird. I forgot it just as I woke up though–y'know that feeling?" she asked, green eyes flitting up.

Akaashi nodded absently, leaning down to kiss the pale love marks on his girlfriend's neck from the night before. "You were still able to dream? Looks like I wasn't able to get you tired enough," he joked teasingly, pulling Tsukimi so that her body was pressing against his.

Hoshiko rolled her eyes, embarrassed, cheeks turning red. "Shut up, Kei," she complained. "It's 'cause you're too fuckin' old," she shot back, grinning slyly. "You're twenty-nine, for fuck's sake. You're practically ancient."

Keiji merely hummed against her skin, pressing soft kisses here and there. "I think you're just a baby," he murmured in response.

"Twenty-three-year-olds aren't babies, Kei."

"That's exclusive."

Tsukimi laughed at the editor's witty retort, caressing his face. "Then you're a pedophile, you nasty man."

Akaashi rolled his eyes. "Sure. And you're just here with me so you can gain all my money when I kick the bucket, yeah?"

Tsukimi giggled. "Yeah. I'll poison you're coffee cup and take all your funds when you're out–"

She was interrupted by the ringing of Akaashi's phone. The man sighed and pressed one last kiss to his girlfriend's forehead before sitting up. "Sorry baby, gotta take the call," he mussed her hair apologetically before picking up the call and swiping right, accepting the call.

"Hello?" Tsukimi could hear Akaashi speak as he picked up his clothes from the ground and tugged them on, his voice fading as he walked out of the bedroom. The astronomer decided to take this time to get out of bed herself and prep for work. Reaching for her birth control pills, Tsukimi yelped in surprise as she accidentally knocked one of her and Keiji's framed photos to the ground.

"Oh, no, no, no, no, no," mumbled the astronomer as she picked up the cracked frame, the sight of the crack running down Keiji's figure disheartening her. "Shit," she exhaled heavily, placing it back on the table, "I'll have to get another frame today."

As she strolled into the kitchen, ready to leave, Tsukimi was surprised to see her boyfriend sitting at one of the stools to the counter, staring down at the marble, deep in thought.

Furrowing her dark brows, she made her way over to Akaashi and rubbed his back. "Keiji? Everything alright?" she asked in a tone softer than her usual insouciant one.

When Akaashi looked up, she was alarmed to see that there was a crease between his pretty blue-green eyes. "It's... fine," he replied hesitantly, then seeing the worry in his girlfriend's verdant irises, hurried to add, "It's, um, nothing to worry about. Just some... old stuff," he explained while attempting to crack a smile.

Tsukimi sensed the anxiety brewing in her lover's voice but did not press upon the matter. She knew he'd tell her what was going on when the time was right, after all. So instead, she leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his forehead. "Alright," she murmured, then tilted his chin forward so she could kiss him. "Just know I'm here for you no matter what, 'kay?" she smiled.

Akaashi smiled, albeit weakly, Tsukimi could tell. "Yeah, I know," he returned the kiss. Tsukimi waited for him to continue, "And that applies to me to you, too," but when he didn't, a flash of alarm triggered what she liked to call her sixth sense. Her girl sense, as society would call it.

For a moment she debated whether or not she should press the issue, but Akaashi didn't give her a chance. Glancing down at the watch she'd gifted him for Christmas that past year, he reminded her, "You ought to get going now, I think. You're going to be late if you don't hurry."

"Shit, you're right," Tsukimi shook her head free of its burdening thoughts and picked up her purse and other necessities. But as she reached the front door, car keys in hand, she couldn't help but take one last look at her boyfriend sitting at the counter.

Maybe it was just some little thing from work, but the look of despair on Akaashi's face just didn't sit right with her.

. . .

The classroom was lively and bustling as the kids discussed what they would do during the upcoming Spring Break. Some were traveling overseas, others were heading over to vacation homes, and some would merely stay at home.

The Suna Twins fell into the final category: Their father had a home game to play for, so they would stay and watch. Their seventh birthday also happened to occur that break, which they planned to spend with their father and uncles.

As the twins spoke, Tsukimi couldn't help but wonder if Akaashi's friend, Bokuto would happen to know the twins' father. It'd make sense if he did–they were both volleyball players, after all.

It'd be funny if he did. Small world.

"–kimi! Ms. Tsukimi!" The green-eyed teacher snapped back to attention at Riko's sweet voice. "Yes? Sorry, I was thinking about something," she apologized for her lack of attention.

"It's ok!" Riko hurriedly assured her teacher. "Riku and I just wanted to ask–" she nudged her brother with her elbow, who in turn huffed moodily. "–if you wanted to come to our birthday party!"

Tsukimi froze, shocked by the proposal. It took her a moment to relax, chuckling gently as she did so. "Riko... Riku, as much as I'd love to spend your birthday with you, I don't think I'm allowed to."

"Why not?!" questioned Riko. "We already asked Daddy, and he said yes! He said he wanted to meet you, too! Because we talk about you all the time!"

Tsukimi laughed at the twin's unfiltered honesty. "So the two of you talk about me a lot, hm?" she inquired with a teasing tone.

Riko nodded unashamedly. "Yes! 'Cause you're the bestest teacher ever!" Her twin brother rolled his eyes, yet said nothing.

At this, the teacher crossed her arms, green eyes glinting charmingly in the sunlight that filtered into the classroom. "Really? Even better than Mr. Suga?"

Both twins nodded, all loyalty cast aside from their original teacher. Tsukimi had to stifle a laugh. I'm so telling Koushi about this later.

Returning back to the original suggestion at hand, Tsukimi mused over it. "Well... I don't know if I can... I am your teacher after all–"

Upon the sight of the pleading faces of the two twins, Tsukimi paused midsentence. Feeling her heart melt at the endearing sight, she laughed and swept both twins onto her knees. "Oh fine, fine," she amended as she wrapped both arms around the two twins. "I'll email your father."

"No need," Riku shook his head. "Daddy says he'll text you soon," he told her. This quirked up a wry smile on Hoshiko's lips.

These kids. Ten steps ahead, aren't they?

As the bell rang, signifying the end of lunch, both siblings hurried back to their desks, rushing to stow away their now-empty lunch boxes. As the rest of the children filed in from recess, Tsukimi was already wondering what she would get as presents for her two favorite students.
