xii ;; when the world begins to tilt
SUNA WOKE UP to a splitting headache the next morning, groaning as the early sun pierced through his eyes. "Fuck," he muttered as he slowly raised his eyelids, his brain sluggish as he awoke himself.
He laid idly in bed for another several moments, until the realization of what his situation was hit him explosively: "Oh, FUCK!"
Panicking, the middle blocker jumped out of his bed and hurriedly grabbed his phone, wincing at the seven missed calls and twenty unread texts from Atsumu, and the ten missed calls and... forty unread texts from his sister.
Aw, fuck. I'm so screwed when I get home.
Rushing out of the room, Suna froze at the sight of Hoshi sleeping on her couch, still snoring quietly despite his loud exclamations. He blinked several times before finally making the decision to grab one of her sticky notes and quickly scribble a note to the astronomer, thanking her for her hospitality.
Without waking her up, Suna quietly donned his shoes and slipped out the front door shaking his head with a groan as he tried to clear his hangover and started to run home.
. . .
"Where the fuck were you?!" Suna winced at the combined, angry chorus of voices of both his friend and sister. Apparently Atsumu, once he realized was unable to reach the father of the twins he was babysitting, called their aunt and his sister-in-law, asking if she knew where he was. When she realized the situation at hand, Remi quickly drove over to her brother's home, trying to contact her sibling all the while.
They eventually gave up and spent the night in the house, taking care of the twins and wondering where the eldest Suna was.
"Do you have any idea of how worried we were?!" spat Remi angrily, marching up to her brother and glaring up at him. Suna scratched his head apologetically, genuinely remorseful. "I'm sorry, Remi," he looked sadly down at her. "I... made a mistake," he finished with a sigh.
Atsumu rolled his eyes. "At least he owns up to it," he grunted, slapping his brother-in-law on the shoulder. "You didn't answer our first question though," Remi frowned, crossing her arm and tapping her foot against the tiled floor impatiently. "Weren't you just heading out to check out your star?"
Suna sighed. "I did, but then–I met the, um, discoverer of my star. Turns out it was... my friend. The one I stargaze with," he explained.
The jaws of both Atsumu and Remi dropped open. "What? She–okay. You know what? Nevermind." Remi raised her hands in defeat. "Then what? That still doesn't explain why you were out for the night," she rushed her brother.
"Ok, so we, uh, went out for a drink, because... well, why not?" Suna continued, scratching his head. His sister and brother-in-law deadpanned at him. "'Why not'? Did you forget ya have kids at home?" Atsumu quirked a brow, leaning back and crossed his arms.
"Well, I mean," Suna stuffed his hands into his pocket. "I didn't think we would be long... And then, well, we got drunk and went to the clearing that we usually meet to stargaze. Then–" the middle blocker froze as he recalled the previous night's events, how close they'd been to one another, how there was nothing stopping him from leaning down to–
"I got stung by a bee, she took me to her apartment and treated me, then we went to sleep," he finished his story flatly. His audience looked at him with mildly confused looks and blinked once. "Wait. Did y'all fuck?" Atsumu wrinkled his nose.
Suna was horrified. "Hell no!" he shook his head viciously. "I–she let me sleep on her bed, and she slept on her couch."
Despite herself, Remi looked a little offended by her brother's actions. "Why didn't you sleep on the couch??"
"Well, I was basically already passed out, and she insisted! If I were sober, I would've slept on the couch!" he defended himself. "Yeah. If you were sober, you would've been home by ten," Atsumu snorted.
Suna sighed heavily as Remi and the setter chuckled at his words. "That's beside the point–the point is, I'm sorry you two," he apologized with an air of finality. "I'll take you guys out for dinner sometime to make up for this, 'kay?"
A sparkle immediately appeared in Atsumu and Remi's eyes. "Really?!" the female Suna asked. "Can I bring Osamu too, then?"
Suna scrunched up his nose. "Fuck no! Atsumu's bad enough, having Osamu there would literally put me in crippling debt!"
His sister rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "If Osamu's not coming, then I'm not forgiving you," she sniffed, arousing a groan from her sibling's throat. "Fine," he reluctantly assented, rolling his eyes at the delighted grin on his sister's face. "Yay!"
As he watched both his sister and setter friend celebrate, he couldn't help but think of the astronomer he'd spent the night with yesterday. He'd been too close to her, nearly even kissing her at some point. It was all happening too fast, too soon, he reminded himself as he thought of her startling clear green gaze. Too soon after... after Ochika.
What's going on with me? his brows unconsciously creased.
Setting his lips into a tight line, Suna determinedly set a resolution.
I'm not going to see Hoshi again if I can help it.
. . .
Tsukimi wasn't surprised to find that Rin hadn't come stargazing the next few days. She lounged quietly beneath the stars that Friday night, twisting her feet back and forth as she sank into her thoughts.
He must feel uncomfortable, she deduced intelligently. Yesterday probably hit too close to home for him, especially after he lost his wife. Her green eyes considerably softened. Poor guy. He must be in pain.
Then, thinking of the moment she'd shared with Rin yesterday at the exact same place she was, at nearly the exact same time, red bloomed over her cheeks as she recalled their proximity.
Shit, bruh, she internally groaned. Why does he, of all people, have to be this randomly hot?!
Shaking her head free of her intrusive thoughts, Tsukimi opted to think of the birthday party for the twins tomorrow. She'd spent her afternoon today wrapping up her presents as prettily as she could, placing her love in them with a sweet happy birthday note.
I've missed them, she admitted to herself, chuckling softly as she thought of the twins. She'd stored the location in her phone already and remembered deadpanning as soon as it came up on her maps. "Of course, they live in the rich apartment building," she recalled groaning as she stared at her computer, leaning back and covering her eyes with her fingers. "Well, at least I'll be able to take a peek at the life of a rich person."
What she wasn't counting on was, upon the door swinging open, she would be greeted face-to-face by none other than Rin himself, his nickname short for Suna Rintarou, father to her two favorite twins from school.
The deja vu is crazy, Tsukimi thought at the back of her mind. Two voices chorused the same word:
"What???"
