Round One Rumble

"Use Body Slam!" Gold shouted to his Pokémon. Meganium took off and charged ahead, jumping into the air and slamming right into her opponent.

The Roserade was completely knocked over and pinned down under Meganium. "Now hit them with Petal Blizzard!" Petals started to swarm around the two Pokémon and struck Roserade while it was being held down.

Barry started stomping his foot. "Use Poison Jab! Let's go! C'mon!" The storm came to a stop as Meganium was knocked back by a blow from Roserade. The flower Pokémon got back on its feet and didn't seem to be much worse for wear. "Weather Ball!"

Roserade held its hands in the air for a moment and then suddenly launched a red projectile at Meganium. The blow was surprisingly powerful and sent Gold's starter flying back.

He pulled out a Poké Ball and returned Meganium. Keep cool. You planned for this. He told himself as he sent out his other Pokémon.

A brown-furred bear appeared onto the field and roared. "Ursaring, use Slash!" Gold's Pokémon charged right at its opponent and raked his claw across the Roserade's body.

Barry glared at the battlefield. "Energy Ball! And then Poison Jab!" Roserade quickly recovered and then tossed a green ball into Ursaring's face. The projectile exploded and then Roserade slammed one of its flower-hands into the chest of Gold's Pokémon.

Ursaring was suddenly afflicted by a purple stun. Gold recognized the status as poisoning, which made him grin. "Perfect! Ursaring finish this with Payback!"

Gold's Ursaring grinned as it slammed its paw into Roserade's stomach and sent the Pokémon flying. Barry's Pokémon crashed onto the ground and was defeated by the blow. Now that we've got Guts going, this'll be a cinch! Gold told himself as Barry frustratedly called out his Empoleon.

Wally decided he would lead with Gallade and the fight was off to a strong start. They hadn't even had to Mega Evolve yet and had already taken down one of the trainer's Pokémon.

Wally's opponent, a boy named James, sent out a hulking mass made up of stones and barnacles. Wally had known his opponent was a Kalos native and researched Kalos Pokémon. He called upon that research and remembered that this was a Barbaracle.

Alright Wally, ready to wrap this up? Gallade asked. Wally snapped back into battle mode. I'm thinking we go Mega, put on a show. How about it?

Wally shook his head. "I have a different plan, actually. I want to use Grim instead." Gallade clearly wanted to protest but allowed Wally to call him back and send out his Banette. He didn't want any of his potential opponents to catch on to the fact that Gallade was his ace or learn all the tricks they had. Plus, Mega Evolution wasn't something Wally wanted to do. Not anymore.

The ghostly Pokémon turned back at Wally and grinned with its golden zipper mouth. Then it turned and stared down its opponent with its blood-red eyes. "Grim, use Will-O-Wisp!" The Banette conjured several purple fireballs around her and sent them forth at the opponent.

"Cut them up with Razor Shell!" James yelled and his giant Pokémon swung its arms into the spheres which dissipated them. "Now use Rock Slide." Barbaracle slammed its arms into the ground and drudged up several boulders which it threw at Grim.

"Phantom Force!" Wally shouted as the stones approached. Grim suddenly vanished from the battlefield and reappeared behind Barbaracle, striking it while its guard was down. "Will-O-Wisp!"

With the blow landed, Barbaracle was unable to recover before Grim could unleash another set of ghostly flames and send them into the Pokémon. It suddenly burst into flames for a split second.

James grit his teeth. "Razor Shell! While they're close!" Barbaracle lunged at Wally's Banette and struck her several times with its arms. The barrage was paused by it being afflicted by the burn again and now it was Grim's turn to attack.

"Finish this off with Hex!" Wally grinned as James gasped and dark energy surrounded Barbaracle on all sides before slamming into it. The Pokémon was completely defeated by the extra powerful blow and Wally won his first match.

May's fight had been an immediate struggle when her Mawile was defeated early on. Swellow had managed to even the score but was partially worn down in the process.

The Unovan trainer had now sent out her second Pokémon. May didn't recognize the Pokémon she was now up against. It was covered in what looked like grey bandages and had a large red head. May planned on wrapping up the battle quickly before Swellow could be done in. "Accelgor, use Headbutt!"

The Pokémon lunched at Swellow headfirst and slammed into May's bird Pokémon. "Hold on, Swellow! Aerial Ace!" Swellow recovered from the blow and flew around, diving into Accelgor a few times.

The opposing trainer frowned and the attack seemed to deal a lot of damage which told May this Pokémon was weak to flying attacks. "Bug Buzz!"

A green wave erupted from Accelgor and hit Swellow again. The bird's flight faltered but it managed to keep itself airborne. May needed to finish this immediately. "Use Aerial Ace and then Quick Attack!"

Swellow slammed into Accelgor again, knocking over his opponent before coming around with incredible speed. With the Pokémon weakened, it was time to end the battle. "Brave Bird!"

May's bird took to the skies and suddenly burst into flames. He dove back down one last time and crashed into his target. The blow kicked up dirt and created a massive explosion.

May held her breath for a second before Swellow triumphantly rose above the smoke and dirt while Accelgor was down for the count.

Andy confidently strode onto the battlefield and sent out his Dracovish while his opponent sent out a tiny electric mouse. The Plusle was decorated with plus signs on its body and had blue ears and a tail.

"Alright Plusle, we've got this! Use Thundershock!" The tiny Pokémon sent an equally tiny jolt of electricity at Andy's chimeric beast.

Andy laughed, it seemed almost too perfect he had this incredible beast against a tiny weakling. The move did nothing to his Dracovish. "Fishious Rend!"

Dracovish lunged forward and slammed right into its target. The Pokémon was defeated by the absurdly strong blow and Andy tried to stifle his laughter. He was having too much fun with this.

In an almost identical scenario, his opponent sent out a Minun and was immediately hit by another Fishious Rend. The battle was over just like that and Andy strode off the battlefield without another word.

Gold's battle had been going relatively fine. The giant metal penguin that Barry was using to battle with had taken quite a beaten by Gold's Ursaring before the Bear Pokémon was defeated and he had to send out Meganium.

"Vine Whip!" Meganium shot two bulky vines from its petals across the field towards Barry.

"Metal Claw and hit them away!" Barry yelled as the attack approached Empoleon. Its flippers started to glow and it swung the metal limbs into the approaching vines which stopped them in their tracks. "Drill Peck!"

Empoleon's beak started to glow and it dashed forward in Meganium's direction. The penguin Pokémon started to spin and drilled into Gold's Pokémon.

The damage was going to pile up if Gold didn't come up with a plan soon. "Petal Blizzard and then use Body Slam!" Petals swarmed around the two Pokémon and then Meganium threw her weight into the opposing foe but Empoleon didn't topple over.

The petal storm came to a stop and Barry started to smirk. "Use Aqua Jet and back up!" Water swirled at Empoleon's feet and it struck Meganium before jumping up and getting far away. "Now use your Hydro Pump!"

The metallic bird opened its beak and fired high velocity water across the field at Meganium. "Quick, use Petal Blizzard and block it!" A barrier of petals swarmed around Meganium which impeded most of the water from getting through.

How are we going to stop this thing? We can barely damage it and can't even knock it over because it's so heavy... Gold was reminded of a previous battle against a heavy foe and knew what he had to do. "Vine Whip!

Barry didn't seem to have realized that Gold had a plan and just commanded Empoleon to knock away the vines again and move in to attack. "Now grab it and hoist it up! Give it all you've got!" The vines suddenly turned and wrapped around Empoleon's legs and Meganium slowly lifted it into the sky.

Barry started flailing his arms but it was too late. "Drop it!" Empoleon fell from the great height and crashed into the ground face first. "Vine Whip one more time!" The vibes shot down and slammed into the battered foe's back and it stopped writhing. Gold had done it.

Selene's battle was going incredibly well. She didn't want to get too comfortable but Incineroar had taken down her opponent's Hippowdon and now all that stood in her way was a Froslass. "Froslass, use Hail!"

Snow began to fall onto the battlefield and Selene shivered while Incineroar didn't seem to bothered by the incoming storm. "Use Flare Blitz!" Incineroar burst into flames and dashed across the battlefield but Froslass suddenly vanished into the snow.

"Ice beam!" Incineroar came to a stop and looked around for its target when it was suddenly struck by a blast of ice.

Hail began to beat down onto Incineroar's body and Selene winced. "Looks like Froslass can dodge around us, huh? Use Darkest Lariat."

Incineroar threw itself in the direction of the attack and slammed its bulky arm into the Froslass. More hail began to strike Incineroar and Froslass rose into the sky.

Selene suddenly had an idea as she glanced at the hailclouds. "Let's take care of this storm. Use Flare Blitz on the clouds!" Incineroar looked at her with uncertainty but burst into flames and jumped up. The clouds suddenly looked as though they were burning up before dissipating and Incineroar landed on the ground.

The opposing trainer was completely taken aback but Selene decided she wasn't done yet. "Malicious Moonsault!" Her Z-Ring started to glow and she channeled energy into Incineroar.

Incineroar ran forward at Froslass and leaped into the sky, practically bursting with energy. A wrestling ring appeared around their target and Selene grinned as Incineroar fell back down and body-slammed their opponent. A flashy finish perfectly fitting of the Alolan Champion. She chuckled to herself as she heard Elio cheer her on from the sidelines.

Yellow's momentum with Pikachu was strong enough that she was no longer concerned about being too rusty. Her Beedrill was now on the field and facing down a Dusknoir. She held up her key stone and mega evolved Beedrill for extra oomph. The bee Pokémon jabbed her many needle arms at the giant ghostly foe.

"Swords Dance!" Yellow shouted to her Pokémon and its needles all started to sharpen even further.

Yellow hadn't had a serious battle in so long. She was shocked that she had even been invited. Becoming a parent didn't leave much time for being a trainer.

The opposing trainer didn't waste any time getting into the battle. "Shadow Ball!" A dark orb rushed into Beedrill and hit with an immense amount of force.

She had caught every Pokémon in Kanto, become the Champion, chased after countless rare Pokémon, and now she had to prove that she wasn't some sort of passing fad.

Yellow's Pokémon pulled itself back up and she grinned. "Poison Jab!" In the blink of an eye, Beedrill was across the battlefield and jamming two of its needles into Dusknoir's chest. The blow was immensely powerful but Yellow still wasn't done. "X-Scissor!"

Yellow was back.

Beedrill sliced Dusknoir's body repeatedly and the Pokémon tumbled over and collapsed.

Blue strode onto the battlefield and casually spun one of his Poké Balls in his hand. Cynthia was staring him down with a stern look. The Champion of Sinnoh... let's see if you're all you're cracked up to be! Blue said silently and he sent out his Kingdra.

Cynthia made a predictable move and led with her Garchomp. A hulking dark blue dragon with sharp teeth and claws decorating its body. Garchomp roared but Blue didn't let himself feel intimidated. "Use Dragon Pulse!"

Kingdra fired a purple draconian beam at Garchomp who didn't try to dodge the attack. It endured the blow and stood strong which surprised Blue. "Garchomp, use your Earthquake!"

Cynthia's ace slammed its foot onto the ground and a shockwave made its way into Kingdra and knocked him into the air.

"Hang in there and use Ice Beam!" Blue shouted. The trainer tried to keep his composure and revealed his secret weapon against his opponent.

Cynthia thrust out her arm as Kingdra unleashed the attack. "Dodge it!" Garchomp jumped up and surprised Blue by flying around and perfectly dodging the ice beam.

He wouldn't let himself be dissuaded and came up with a new plan as Kingdra started to land. "Use Surf!" As Kingdra fell he conjured a wave of water beneath him and then rode the wave into Garchomp just as it was landing.

Kingdra came to a stop while Garchomp was hit by the water attack. Kingdra turned around and and faced its foe as Blue gave his next command. "Now use Ice Beam!"

"Dragon Rush!" Garchomp rushed right at Kingdra while Blue's Pokémon fired its ice attack at the approaching enemy.

Come on, come on! Why isn't it stopping? Blue complained as Garchomp threw itself into Kingdra.

Blue's Pokémon went flying and crashed down completely fainted. Blue tried his best to hide his shock but Kingdra was supposed to bring down Garchomp.

It didn't seem too worn down but Blue just had to hope it was a good actor as he sent out his Typhlosion. "Start off with Flamethrower!" His first Pokémon unleashed fire onto Garchomp.

"Shake it off! Use Dragon Rush!" Garchomp cut through the fire as Cynthia gave the command and slammed into Typhlosion. "Earthquake!" The ground shook again and piled the damage onto Typhlosion.

At least he managed to stay grounded. Blue consoled himself. "Shadow Claw! C'mon Typhlosion bring him down!" The desperation was starting to show in Blue's voice as Typhlosion slammed its claw into Garchomp and both Pokémon started to appear more and more exhausted.

Cynthia shook her head. "We won't be done in. Use Iron Head!" Garchomp slammed its skull into Typhlosion and he staggered back.

Blue looked his opponent up and down and ran through all the attacks that had been landed on Garchomp. This was it. He'd need to go all out if he was going to win.

"Use Burn Up!" Blue commanded. Typhlosion started to channel the fire from around its neck into its chest and began glowing.

Cynthia knew what was about to happen and wasn't going to take it standing around. "Finish this with Dragon Rush!" Garchomp lunged at Typhlosion just as he unleashed a massive fiery explosion.

The flames consumed both Pokémon and the heat was enough to make Blue start to sweat before it died down.

As the flames vanished, both Pokémon came into view. They were lying on the ground, unconscious. That was it. Blue had lost.

He wanted to pout but Cynthia started to clap. "It's not often someone manages to bring down my Garchomp, that was an excellent battle."

The kindness snuffed out any bitterness he may have had and he smiled. "Thanks! You're quite the battler yourself! Makes sense that you've been the Champion of Sinnoh for so long. Whoever you're up against it in for quite a battle."

With that, Blue returned his Pokémon and he walked off of the battlefield. Maybe he'd lost, but with the fight over he could at least spend more time with Green.
