Chapter 10 - Reject.

Today the subject arrived.

Female - Age 10.

Given name: Akuma Warai.

The subject allegedly possesses three devil fruit powers – Admiral Warai was told by the birth father that, in order to kill the girl, she was given one more not long after finding out she possessed his and the mother's devil fruit powers.

I've received notes from the former doctor of the island about the subject's condition  where she was born with two hearts.

There are no records of any progress to explain its origin  but could explain why the multiple devil fruits did not kill her.

Objective:
Build resilience and strength. Develop healing processes and interrogation techniques.

I will consult admiral Warai about assigning Tora to be the subject's caretaker.

(Y/N) hugged her knees. The crying wouldn't stop.

By now she thought her body would have shriveled up from the countless tears as she looked out through the small barred window while trying to drown out the conversations about her.

'Law...'

She couldn't forget the smile he gave her once her consciousness had returned, along with her heart, or when he collapsed. It must have been a huge shock since she can't remember anything after that. Then she woke up in this cell – his blood still covering her.

By now it had dried up, but the smell still lingered in the cramped space, constantly reminding her of what she did and the last words Akuma had spoken to her.

'In the end. I will have the last laugh.'

She clutched her chest as another wave of pain hit her and began sobbing uncontrollably.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be, he wasn't going to...

"LAW!"

The first experiment was messy - but in the end a success.
The subject lost consciousness a few times but managed to survive through the procedure and heal herself after the shock had worn off.

Unfortunately, she can not manage to heal her bones. So some of her training will have to be postponed for approximately six weeks until they've healed. In the meantime, we will focus on her poison resilience.

"She's coming with us!"

Luffy stood with his arms crossed in front of the Heart Pirates and the mink tribe, staring at them with a determined expression.

The three groups had been arguing for hours on (Y/N)'s fate.

Luffy refused to back down on letting her go with them, while the Heart Pirates wanted her to be punished for what she did to their captain. Some were furious beyond belief while some were still recovering from the news.

The mink tribe, however, was trying to act as a mediator between the two, their main objective being (Y/N) leaving Zou as soon as possible as they believed she posed a threat to their home.

"We want her either executed or imprisoned somewhere far away!" Ikkaku said as she stepped out in between Shachi and Penguin. "Everyone knows what she's capable of!"

Now it was Namis turn to step in. "She also saved everyone's lives back at Dressrosa! Almost losing her life in the process!"

"That doesn't mean anything! We read it too! She's been the governments' lapdog for more than half her life" Ikkakku argued. "She could wipe off every single person on this island if she so chooses!"

This caused a frown to appear on Inuarashi. As much as he was grateful to both crews for their help, he had to consider the safety of the tribe. He didn't know (Y/N) and only had Luffys word to counteract the information in the files he had read.

But then again, the files contained the words of a madman.

The subject is beginning to show signs of a slight personality change as she entered adolescence. She is more reserved but has become far more tolerant of the experiments.
She no longer cries or screams and heals faster than the previous month.

However, the reports from Tora has informed me that the subject has begun talking to herself.

"Are you (Y/N)?"

The sound of something scraping across the floor got (Y/N)'s attention and she looked down to her side to see a plate next to her, but the sickening twist in her stomach made her unable to look at it for more than two seconds. So she looked up at whoever gave it to her.

"... You're Bepo, right?"

The polar gave a shy nod before taking a seat in front of the bars, his hands pawing nervously at his knees. "Why?"

She had to cover her mouth in order to force back the bile that had risen in her throat and threatened to force its way out. His ears fell back a little at the sudden whimpering.

"S-Sorry! But... I need to know. They're fighting about you and-"

"I didn't mean to!" The bear jumped back when she was suddenly in front of him with a tight grip on the bars. "I'd never hurt him! Never!" she cried. "He was the only one who... And I..."

She began to violently shake as the thoughts finally begun to sink in.

Never seeing Law anymore. Never seeing that teasing smile or hearing his voice again.

"And I-I... I'm so sorry! If I could trade my life for his, I would!" She looked at him with earnest. "I'd go back to the marines and relive everything again a thousand times over if it could bring him back!

Bepo tilted his head, touched at her declaration, but a little confused at the same time.

"(Y/N)-chan, Captain is not dead."

Interesting.

I've never thought of looking into it, what were the odds? But either way, after examining one of our staff members, after having fallen ill, it appears her blood matches with the subjects'.

It is unclear if the subject is aware of this - given her Chi-chi no Mi abilities. Perhaps she hasn't developed them enough to tell.

I will have to consult Admiral Waraui about this.

"What are you saying?" The captain of the Straw-Hats asked, his head lowered with a disappointed expression.

Shachi and Penguin looked towards their crew-mates, who nodded in confirmation. "We're saying that the alliance is off until captain wakes up so he can decide."

"If he wakes up." Ikakku muttered, earning some glares from the rest of the crew.

"Come on now!" Chopper said while fiddling with his hooves. "He's stable. Also, don't you think you're all being a bit hasty?"

"I'm sorry." Shachi muttered while he avoided eye contact. "But we don't trust you since you deliberately let her stay on your crew."

By now, the Heart Pirates were done arguing. They were exhausted from the injuries they sustained while defending Zou and their thoughts were constantly on their captains' condition.

"Do as you wish with her. But we're leaving." he finished before they started walking away. "We have your Vivre card if Captain decides to resume the alliance."

They all knew that there would be hell to pay once Law found out that they made such a huge decision without his approval. But for now, they were all ready to face whatever punishment he would have for them.

Their top priority was his recovery and to get as far away as possible from the lurking danger on this island.

"I-I'm sorry!" Bepo said while waving his hands helplessly to try and comfort the sobbing woman in front of him.

Shaking her head quickly, she began laughing through her tears. "Thank God... He's alive..." she cried. "He's alive!"

"Bepo."

Both turned to see Shachi and Penguin glaring at them. "Get away from her. We're leaving."

(Y/N)'s eyes widened as the pair explained to their navigator the situation, but kept her head down in defeat.

She had no strength nor wish to argue against their decision. She had no right to.

Bepo just nodded. Even though he could feel that (Y/N) was not an evil person and that she cared enormously for his captain, he knew he was outnumbered.

When he got up, he felt a tug on his sleeve and bent down to listen.

"Bepo!"

The bear stood up straight and apologized before following his crewmates out, giving (Y/N) a last reassuring glance.

A few weeks later, The Straw-hats split up in different directions, according to the plan where they would meet up again in Wano. Hopefully, the Heart Pirates would change their minds.

"(Y/N)-ya?"

"Captain!" Bepo cried before hurrying over to his dear friend, who he had been watching over non-stop ever since they had left Zou. "How are you feeling?! H-Hold on I'll go get the others!"

But before he could leave, Law grabbed his arm and shook his head. He needed a few minutes to wrap his head around everything before the entire crew would bombard the medical bay.

"What happened Bepo?"

While apologizing in between every other word, the navigator summarized everything that had happened at Zou and the tension it had caused between the crew and the Straw-Hats.

"What about-"

"I think you need to talk to the crew Captain. Sorry." Bepo said, surprising his captain for a second. But Law sensed that there was something his friend didn't want to tell him.

So he dropped it for the time being. Right now he had to deal with the rest of the crews' punishments. It didn't matter if they trusted the Straw Hats or not after what had happened. Ending the alliance was not their decision to make.

Perhaps he needed to reestablish their positions so that they would not forget a second time who the captain was.

Later that night, Law stepped into the control room and watched as Bepo looked over him with a grim expression - expecting his turn.

"I'm not going to punish you Bepo." he said as he took a seat, to the navigators huge relief.

Granted, Law has yet to punish Bepo for anything, he never needed to. But this time the crew had truly pissed off their captain, so he wasn't sure if this would be the day he wouldn't be able to escape his wrath.

"However, I would like to know what you're keeping from me." he said before crossing his arms and leaning back in his seat.

The bear fidgeted a bit before sighing. "(Y/N)-chan asked me to give you a message."

Law sat straight up, not even bothering to hide the anticipation erupting in his chest. "And?"

"She uh, asked me to tell you she's sorry."

The raven smirked a bit to himself. Of course that would be the first thing she'd say. She was much like Bepo in that sense. "Anything else?"

Now, Bepo wasn't looking at him, but out the window while suppressing a slight blush. "That she loves you too."

This time it was Laws turn to suppress the wildfire spreading over his cheeks before pulling his hat down enough to cover his face. He cleared his throat. "Is that so?"

Bepo nodded, still not looking towards his captain, so he figured there was more.

"What else?"

He looked at Law, his lips in a tight line before sighing.

"She asked me to tell you not to look for her."

I told him!
I told admiral Waraui not to involve Tora and push Akuma past her psychological limits!

Tora was there for a reason! To be a comfort that would keep the subject from ever turning her powers against us.

I can tell by the screams that she's closing in.
That woman is dangerous. More than I had ever anticipated.
The hearts have no meaning in this! It's all in her head!
She

"She did?" Law looked over to Bepo with a dark scowl.

Nodding, he looked back with a hopeful expression. "But, you don't take orders from anyone, right?"

The captain looked mildly surprised, right before a smirk broke out.

"I don't plan to."
