––––––
It had already been five years since the events that took place on Zou.
The heart pirates had kept their promise to help the Straw-hats out in Wano after Law had reimbursed their alliance and were eventually victorious.
It had been messy and many of them barely came out of it alive, but it had been a victory nonetheless. The celebration had gone on for weeks once Luffy became an emperor, eventually ending with him resuming his quest to become pirate king and finding the One Piece.
Apart from articles Law read every once in a while, concerning the Straw-hats – that had been the last thing he had heard since then.
For the past three years after the Wano war, there was only one thing on his mind now that he was free from his promise to Luffy and from his own pursuit of revenge – finding (Y/N).
His crew had not been happy about it since they still held resentment towards her for nearly killing their captain. But since Law did not waver in his decision for a second, they learned to live with it. However, they were far from accepting it and shared a common promise to make sure she knew it – should she ever join their crew.
This concerned Bepo and the poor navigator spent several nights awake, contemplating whether or not he was going to warn his captain about the hostility and the crews' plans.
In the end, not wanting to betray anyone, he had decided to wait it out and see what would happen. Maybe his captain would give up or maybe the crew would change their minds?
But Law was not giving up, even going as far as to contact an old acquaintance, who definitely kept track of the movements of the marines, who owed him a favor. Perhaps she could pick up on any reports on (Y/N)'s sighting.
"Alright, Trafalgar. Just send me a few," the woman on the other line cleared her throat, "special photographs and I'll consider it."
"Need I remind you that you owe me a favor, Chiaki-ya?" Law sighed while pinching the bridge of his nose.
He had met the woman at Sabaody when he caught her taking pictures of him and Kidd. After confronting her, he was surprised when she had casually told them that she was part of the revolutionary army as their hacker.
'It's not like you could ever trace anything back to me' she had explained with a smug grin before suddenly disappearing. To this day he has no idea if it had been the result of a devil fruit.
It wasn't until Marineford that they had run into each other again, where she had begged him to save her friends' life, hence her owing him a favor.
But his hopes were momentarily shattered when she had reminded him of them being even when she had supplied him with information about Doflamingos connections with Kaido.
"You're so cute when you frown.~" the brunette chuckled. But she had noticed the brief look on the surgeons' face seconds earlier. "Oh well, I'll make an exception since I have such a big heart," He heard her tapping away. "–and cameras set up in your room."
His impatient expression dropped. "Excuse me?"
"I said I'll make an exception. Now stop bothering me."
He stared at the snail after she had hung up and frowned before a familiar blue sphere appeared. "Scan."
"What is this Captain?" Bepo asked, peering into the bag of what looked like tiny broken electronics.
"Just get rid of them." Law muttered before making his way back into his room.
§
'This would've gone faster if you had just let me skewer them.'
(Y/N) rolled her eyes while briskly walking towards the docks with the necessary provisions.
'Don't ignore me! At least we saved money with my techniques.'
"You mean not pay and beat up the merchants?" she retorted while looking around for her boat. The devil inside her mind had not appreciated one of the merchants trying to scam them by overpricing some cheap junk.
But at least this would keep her calm for a while longer now.
'You say tomato, I say to-mah-to.'
She could practically hear the eye roll in Akumas voice and just shook her head in response.
Through the years, (Y/N) had come to accept the fact that she would never be normal and learned to live on her own again. Fair enough, she's never really been alone.
Even though they accepted each other and had learned to cohabitate, Akuma was still too damaged from the years of torture and (Y/N) would have to let her kill every once in a while when the other would get too restless.
But as long as Akuma got to let some steam out, she didn't really care about taking control anymore and would even withdraw completely from time to time, leaving (Y/N) with her own thoughts. Except for fights or if anyone tried to take advantage of them.
Because as much as they didn't really like each other, they were all they had.
She absentmindedly rubbed the scars on her wrist from the old puncture wounds where the bracelet once had been. Now that the sea stone that once diminished their powers had been removed, Akuma had somehow become much calmer.
Maybe being controlled with it, and ignored, had been what had turned her so vicious.
'You might want to look ahead of you angel.~'
(Y/N) winced. She hated that nickname. Despite it sounding endearing, it was nothing but a way for Akuma to mock her for being too nice for her own good and how that resulted in both their pain over the years.
But what she hated most about it was the way it reminded her of how split she actually was. How she lived as two people; The angel and the devil.
She looked over to the marines approaching.
"Great."
§
"Got anything, Chiaki-ya?" Law had been quick to answer when his transponder snail had started ringing with the familiar face on it.
"Wow, I thought once I've seen how a man washes his backside he would skip the formalities.~"
He watched the snail grin at him while feeling several tickmarks form across his forehead.
"I swear I will cut you down if I ever see you again."
The snail gasped. "Threats Trafalgar? I see how it is. Then I will take my business elsewhere."
"Just... Please." he sighed, too tired to get wrapped up in this woman's antics.
The snail made a thoughtful face before smiling. "Alright, I've played with you enough for today." she said before giving him the coordinates.
"From the way the fight escalated, I'd figure she'd be on the move again. I've checked some of the islands that are far away enough from the commotion, but close enough to stay low for a while, and found one that she'll most likely be at."
The captain stared at the snail in slight amazement. "Chiaki-ya, you're–"
"Amazing? Perfect? Hotter than the sun itself and you're a fool to turn all of this down? Oh, I know this already. Your face says it all.~" she snickered before seeing her snail scowl again. "Whoops, gotta go! Good luck Law!"
He smirked a bit while shaking his head. That woman was an impossible mixture of Luffy, Kid and himself. So it was hard to balance her usefulness with the way she irritated him.
But now he finally got what he needed.
"(Y/N), this time I will find you."
§
'This is boring.'
The (H/C) haired woman sighed before closing the book and placing it on the bed table.
"Then what do you suggest? We can't run around right now."
'Let's just go down to the tavern. Maybe there's someone to fight.~'
"Not before we have to leave the island. We just got here." she muttered before moving to grab her book.
'Go, or I'll replay that scene again.'
She sighed and got up. "Fine. But then I want a few days off, got it?"
'If the fight's entertaining enough, I don't see why not.'
Once down at the tavern, (Y/N) scanned the area, semi-disappointed that there only seemed to be locals around. Which wasn't really surprising since it was a pretty calm and secluded island. But now she would have to deal with Akuma until they found some evil pirates or marines to fight.
'Hey! It's not like I'm dancing with joy either.' the voice in her head reprimanded.
Just about as she was to leave, she picked up the sounds of people yelling before bursting into the tavern, announcing that pirates had been spotted on the island and that the marines were on their way.
'Looks like luck is on our side, angel.~'
"Looks like it." she muttered to herself quietly. "Alright, you know the drill."
'See you soon.~' the voice mused before she felt herself fall back into darkness.
The Heart Pirates weren't surprised that people were fearful of them or that word had spread so fast that marines had already arrived within the hour of their own arrival.
What did surprise them, however, was that the soldiers had run past them with little to no interest in their presence.
Penguin and Shachi shuddered. "Is there something worse on this island than us?" the redhead questioned in fear. By us, he mostly referred to their captain.
Laws smirk grew at the thought before ordering that they all followed the sounds of fighting.
"Eeny, meeny, miny mo.~" Akuma mused while bouncing the last marine like a ping pong ball on the wall she created. She sat crossed-legged on the ground and moved her hand in a lazy manner while supporting her chin with the other.
The soldier began screaming. "If he hollers, let him go.~" she giggled.
Turning her wall sideways while the man was in the air, "Eeny. Meeny. Miny. MO!" Her voice got louder with a gleeful hint as she struck him out of sight.
After letting out a loud horrifying cackle, "Even though there are no corpses, I say that was more entertaining than I thought, angel. Might actually give you a whole week to yourself." she purred while standing up and dusting her clothes off.
"(Y/N)-ya."
A wide grin spread on her face before turning around. "Mr. Trafalgar."
She giggled to herself at the disappointed expression he had tried to conceal before she began walking over, only to have his crew take a step forward.
Holding her hands up in defense, "Such hostility.~" she mused.
"Let me see (Y/N)."
She rolled her eyes before spacing out a little. Everyone but Law stared in confusion and horror at the way she argued with herself. Even Bepo had gotten uneasy.
She turned back to Law with a mocking smile that said 'I tried'.
He sighed and walked over, despite his crews' protests, and looked Akuma straight in the eye.
"(Y/N)-ya. I need you to know that I'm not mad at you."
"That's cute and all Mr. Trafalgar, but she doesn't want to see you." She smirked while crossing her arms.
"So the question is, will we be able to leave peacefully or do I have to get nasty?" she drawled the last word in an almost seductive manner; as if the mere mention of violence drew shivers from her. "By all means, you decide. Because I have no complaints against either option."
Before Law could speak he noticed her head twitch for the fraction of a second. She sighed and turned her attention back to them. "So what will it be?"
"I want to see (Y/N)." He stared her down with a shudder-inducing cold while he drew out Kikoku, causing his crew to move to a safer distance. "If I have to fight you, then." he gestured with his free hand. "Ladies first."
A wide grin spread on Akuma as she began to feel the tug. "You play dirty Mr. Trafalgar."
Her eyes began blinking rapidly until a much clearer (E/C) color turned to them, scanning the group before they settled on Law with a sorrowful smile.
She barely made out the sound of a sheeting sword before she felt a hand on her wrist and was enveloped in a tight embrace.
"Five years." Law muttered into her hair and she felt herself tear up.
"I'm sorry." she whispered.
"You made me search for five goddamn years, (Y/N)."
