Chapter 14 - Try

It was around four in the morning when (Y/N) woke up.

She spent around half an hour attempting to fall back asleep, but soon gave up and decided to find something to do.

She moved carefully to not wake the sleeping captain and after some maneuvering, that took some effort, she managed to get up without disturbing him. On the nights he actually slept, she did her best to keep it that way. God knows he needed it.

Carefully, she left to change into some new clothes in her room and threaded quietly through the halls of the submarine. She thought a walk would help her settle her thoughts.
Even though she was used to feeling anxious, it was an odd feeling not to have Akuma pop up at the first chance to voice her opinions.

She smiled to herself, Law really was a genius.

Her smile didn't last long when the thoughts of the surgeon appeared and she recollected the events of a few nights ago. Law wasn't very open about his feelings, but she trusted him to full out reject her if he had been disappointed and therefore changed his opinion about her.

But why did he stop kissing her so suddenly?

"(Y/N)-chan?"

She froze before breathing out in relief, it was just Bepo calling from inside the control room. He must be on his shift.

Walking inside, she wore a gentle smile before the window caught her eye and she looked through the glass in astonishment.

They were closer to the surface, making it reflect the cascading colors of purple and orange that the sunrise provided, which shone in ways that could put all the treasures in the world to shame.

"It's so beautiful." she said while walking closer and gently touching the glass. She smiled widely at the fishes that curiously swam past the window, grateful that this was one of the mornings that the sub moved in a slow and peaceful manner that didn't scare them off.

"Are you alright (Y/N)-chan?"

She jumped when she felt the navigators paw on her shoulder before looking up to see an apologetic expression.

"I'm fine Bepo. Just overwhelmed." she turned her attention back to the ocean. "I never thought I'd ever see something like this."

It was true. Being locked inside half her life and on the run until now, she's never really taken in the world around her. She never had the chance to.

A sudden urge to run back to the surgeon and express her gratitude towards him made her giddy and Bepo chuckled. "I understand what you mean. I've been on watch countless mornings and the sight never stops amazing me."

She nodded absentmindedly before hearing a loud rumble and looked to the polar bear while suppressing a giggle. "Hungry?"

"Yes, sorry! It's actually Shachi and Penguins turn to cook today but they slept in." he bowed his head in shame and (Y/N)'s heart melted.

Cupping his face, making her hands look tiny in comparison, "Don't apologize for being hungry Bepo-chan. I'll make us something." she said before walking towards the door. "Any requests?"

The crew on the yellow submarine stirred in their sleep from the delicious smell that seeped through the vents and into their rooms.

Shachi and Penguin sat up so quickly that they almost fell off their beds when they realized which day it was before throwing on their jumpsuits.

After some clumsy attempts, they finally got dressed and ran down the halls - praying that their captain had not realized their error.

Their feet screeched against the steel floor when they made a sharp turn and had almost run into someone carrying a tray.

"Oh, sorry!" (Y/N) smiled before moving out of their way. "There's breakfast in the kitchen for everyone. This is for Bepo." she gestured to the tray. "He got to choose for today since everyone else was asleep. If you have any request for lunch and dinner, let me know." Again, she smiled before walking past them.

The duo looked to each other skeptically before their stomachs made the decision for them.

A few minutes later everyone was awake and the galley was once again lively.

"This is the best thing I've ever had!" Shachi cried while Penguin, still stuffing his face, only let out a grunt of agreement.

Ikkaku stared at her untouched plate with a frown, before letting out a sigh and started digging in. Had anything been poisoned, those two idiots would have dropped dead by now from the amounts they've consumed.

Once the taste hit her tongue, she did her best to hide the look of surprise. It truly was delicious.

"It's fine." she said before continuing, ignoring the protests of the other two. "But we should be careful, this could be a trick to earn our trust. Next time it could be poison."

The redhead stopped his gluttonous quest and Penguin did the same before making a thoughtful face. "She did say we could choose what we want for lunch and dinner."

Ikakku scoffed. "See? Mark my words she'll kill us all if we're not careful."

A slam against the surface of the table startled everyone into silence before they looked towards the giant fist.

"Instead of gossiping, we should just trust our captain." Jean-Bart spoke calmly while raising the spoon to his lips. "Considering her powers, she could have wiped us out a long time ago if she wanted to." he said before his attention went back to his breakfast.

Truth to be told, Jean-Bart had overheard the conversation between his captain and (Y/N) the other night. Even though he had left early, to not impose, he did hear the part where she had begged Law to kill her so that she wouldn't hurt anyone.

Knowing his captain, there was probably a solution to whatever her problem was. He knew Law was smart and would never confront a topic dead on without thinking it through first and having all kinds of back up plans.

Besides, (Y/N) appeared to be less strained and happier lately. So maybe whatever solution there was; allegedly it had worked.

Some clatter caught the crew's attention and they watched (Y/N) walk towards the kitchen, carrying the empty tray. Everyone looked nervously at each other.

She came back out, still carrying the tray, but now with a new set of dishes probably meant for their captain and they all watched as she made her way to the double doors.

"I would never poison anybody. Especially not when I know how painful it is." she muttered before leaving, causing one of the crew members to look towards the floor with guilt.

Law stirred in his sleep when something soft moved across his forehead and turned his head a bit before stifling a yawn as his eyes fluttered open.

"Morning, Law."

He hummed before sitting up properly and ran his hand through his messy hair, causing (Y/N) to giggle at the bedhead before gesturing towards the tray. "I made breakfast."

When she looked back at him, he just stared at her with a tired frown. "Law?"

He tapped his lips and his smirk grew when her cheeks turned red.

"You're impossible." she sighed but smiled either way, secretly overjoyed to have the opportunity to kiss him again, before moving over and quickly pecked his lips

"Good morning (Y/N)-ya."

Shaking her head at the smug smile, she tugged at his arm until she successfully got him out of bed and seated at his desk.

"I missed your food." he said before digging in and her smile grew at the thought of their shared time back at the Sunny. It had been so much simpler back then.

Some of the Straw-hats may have taken their time to trust her, but they never once treated her inadequately and she had never felt more at home.

She knew it would take time and effort for Laws crew to accept her, but this time it was more nerve-racking. Because it was his crew. The only man she could even think of spending the rest of her days with.

"Did something happen?"

She jolted at the sudden touch and watched Law as he cupped her cheek. Even though his face was stoic and his eyes calculating, she could hear the concern in his voice.

It was difficult not to feel a certain pride in the way he cared for her. So she placed her hand over his while leaning into his touch in a greedy manner. "Everythings fine, Law."

He frowned a bit. "If anyone is giving you a hard time, I want you to tell me."

Yes, Law had been the one to suggest that she would try and make peace with his crew on her own.
But he would not have them deliberately trying to harm her in any type of way.

Shaking her head, she moved his hand to her lips and let them travel across his knuckles in order to appease him. "No one is. Yes, they're a bit guarded. But it's to be expected. I promise no one is mistreating me."

Gripping her wrist and pulling her to his lap, he rubbed his nose against hers with a smile.

"I'm happy to hear that."

Moving their ears away from the door, two members of the Heart crew looked to each other with glossy eyes.

§

(Y/N) made her way to the kitchen, deep in thought about what to make for lunch and almost collided with someone.

"Oh." Her smile was strained, but still friendly at the sight of Shachi and Penguin. "Something the matter?"

Her brows shot up when they began shuffling their feet while keeping their hands behind their backs.

"Could we request lunch today, (Y/N)?"
