Chapter Six

{Solo}

There's a word I'll be using a lot in this fic so I'll give you the definition here;

Quiver: The container used to hold arrows. It can be carried on an archer's body or the bow depending on the archers shooting style.

----

The tires made their monotonous hiss over the rain-washed highway as they drove towards camp Beta. All around, through the tinted windows of the van were overbearing trees, lush greens of the forest fading into orange with the oncoming autumn weather.

Hoseok had decided to let Jungkook sit upfront. He needed to keep his stab wound as clean as possible, so it was safer for Jungkook to be buckled up front and safe. The brunette male brought a finger to the glass as he traced the water droplets running slowly down the window. Jungkook liked the rain, as long as he was inside of course.

A loud yawn could be heard from the back of the van as Hoseok began to stretch his arms above his head. He had just woken up from his long deserved sleep after he had given Daisy the driving instructions for the next hour. Hoseok had to make sure he was well rested because as the teams offical navigator, he had to be awake at all times.

The navigator had a bigger role then thought out to be.

After the apocalypse broke out, new positions of leadership and authority came to surface. Instead of normal roles such as teachers, political leaders and designers, more suited roles were needed. People began to build teams, or 'squads' for upmost safety outside the walls of camps.

The main roles consisted of; a leader, close combat expert, shooter, medical specialist, explosive specialist, mechanic and a navigator. Although the navigator may have seemed to be of little importance, without a navigator you were basically screwed.

Navigators were in-charge of a number of things, not just getting a team from place A to B:

They were in charge of mapping out the terrain to determine whether or not a vehicle could pass through a certain area, or if they have to make it by foot. This also determined the likelihood of encountering a horde, as relatively dense areas with a lot of flat surfaces proved to be more dangerous then steeper, rugged terrains.

They were also in charge of pulling their squad out of a dangerous situation as quickly as possible. If a horde was approaching them it was up to the navigator to give them the best possible escape route for survival.

So saying it once more,

Without a navigator they were screwed.

Hoseok rubbed the sleep from his tired eyes as he stumbled to his feet, ruffling his messed up hair as he made his way to the corner of the van. Moving a few things aside, Hoseok picked up a case full of new arrows, ready to be carried for his bow.

Jungkook's eyes widened at the sight of so many arrows, "Hoseok," Jungkook spoke, catching the orange haired male's attention as he began to unpack the arrows from the box, "Where did you get all those arrows?" Jungkook asked,

Hoseok simply smiled as he grabbed his quiver, slipping the arrows into the leather holder, "Take a closer look at the arrows." Hoseok spoke, not pausing in his work.

Jungkook twisted his legs around to the side of the front seat to get a better view of the arrows Hoseok was handling in the back of the van. Scanning the arrows that still remained in the box, Jungkook realised that all of them were of different size, shape and quality, "They're all different?" Jungkook spoke,

"Exactly." Hoseok said, adjusting the strap on his quiver, "It's because none of them were originally mine."

Jungkook knew exactly what Hoseok meant. Obviously Hoseok had scavenged for each and everyone of the arrows himself.

Hoseok continued to explain, "When the apocalypse first broke out, I knew I needed a weapon. But by the time I had made it to an ammunition store, all the guns had been raided," Hoseok chuckled painfully, "I ended up finding a store stocked with archery accessories so I stocked up on a bunch of bow and arrows." Hoseok pointed towards the arrows of different shapes and sizes, "But unfortunately, I lost a lot of arrows when fending off runners. I never retrieve arrows from zombies, it's too dangerous."

Jungkook cocked his head to the side in question, "Why is that?"

Hoseok placed down his quiver back in the corner as he explained, "The virus is carried by bodily fluids, remember?" Hoseok spoke earning a nod of agreement from Jungkook, "If the arrow penetrates zombie flesh, it picks up the virus. By taking the arrow back with me, the virus could infect me if it touches a small wound or cut." Jungkook nods in understanding, "Therefore I can't risk it."

"That's pretty smart." Jungkook beams as he watches Hoseok clean up the back of the van,

"Nope, just logic." Hoseok chuckles.

Cutting through the calm atmosphere like a shard of glass, Daisy lets out a lace of curses as she begins to take her foot gently off the accelerator. Hoseok is quick to stick his head between Jungkook and Daisy to get a clear view of the front, but to his dismay there was nothing there. Just the line of trees stretching out before them.

"Babe, what's wrong?" Hoseok asked concerningly, "There's nothing there."

Daisy's hands clutched tightly around the cool leather of the steering wheel as they proceeded slowly, "That's the problem Hoseok." she uttered,

"Babe what do you mea-"

"We're almost out of fuel."

----

Hoseok instructed Daisy to pick up the speed as much as possible. They had to quickly make it to a location where fuel would be available.

Guilt came over to haunt Hoseok as he took a deep breath, scanning his eyes across the map clutched tightly in his hands. His eyes trailed along the terrain, the paths, and the built up areas until he came to a conclusion.

"Alright guys, here's what we'll do." Hoseok spoke, trying not to let his nerves surface in front of his squad. "There's an old fuel station close by, but I don't wanna risk it." Hoseok explained,

"Why not?" Jungkook spoke sternly, arms crossed over his chest as he remained seated in the front seat,

"It's been four years. So it's highly unlikely any fuel that remains there is of any good." Hoseok spoke.

The orange haired male flipped the map around in his hands so that Daisy and Jungkook had a clear view, "We need to make it to here." Hoseok spoke, pointing at a spot on the map, "It's an old road by the forest. It's also the only road people can use to come into this region through from the city, so there are bound to be abandoned cars laying around."

Daisy simply nod as she continued down the country road, constantly scanning for any threats through the heavy rain that was beginning to lesson their visual range.

Jungkook on the other hand slipped his gun carefully out from his pocket, checking to see how many bullets he had remaining, "only four" he mumbled to himself.

Unlike Hoseok and Daisy who kept their belongings in the van, Jungkook had to leave behind everything. He had left behind his battle clothing, bullet proof vest, tape, ammunition... everything! He felt practically useless without any of his gear. It was good thing however that Jungkook was skilled at a lot of physically draining activities, so if it came down to close combat, Jungkook knew he could put up a fight if he really needed to.

As if Hoseok had just read Jungkook's thoughts, the orange haired male placed a reassuring hand on Jungkook's shoulder, "We'll grab you some gear on the way to camp Beta." Hoseok smiled, easing the built up tension in the van. "I know there are a few shops on the way there that we can raid."

Jungkook felt a lot more reassured at Hoseok's words. It was almost weird having a squad member look after him with care. Most of the time, as squad leader, it was up to Jungkook to take up all the responsibilities of his subordinates.

It felt nice for a change.

"FUCK!" Daisy called with a rush of panic.

The van momentarily swerved out of control and Jungkook found his body being jerked towards the dashboard as the van skid off the road. Hoseok was thrown backwards as his back collided harshly with the boxes scattered behind him.

Daisy was quick to cut the engine as the van settled on the side of the road. Hoseok let out a groan of annoyance as he dizzily rose to his feet again, "Language babe." Hoseok stuttered, finding his footing again.

"Says the one who literally burst into a lab shouting 'HOLD THE FUCK UP!'" Jungkook retorted, spinning his head around to the back of the van as he unbuckled his seatbelt.

Once Hoseok had regained his senses, he stuck his head in-between the two people sitting up the front of the van, his eyes widened in realisation as he looked out the rain-washed windscreen, "Holy shit."

Daisy found herself frozen in place, staring at the black haired male laying unconsciously on the flooded road,

Daisy gulped,

"I-I think I just ran over someone."
