Chapter Eleven

Jack woke up the next morning early, getting ready quickly and heading outside. After his realization the previous night, he hadn't been of much help to Ferrah with her homework, but he knew she would forgive him. The more Jack thought about the life that had somehow been stolen from him, the more angry and bitter towards Ornum he grew. Yes, he'd been wrong to tell the boy what he'd told him all those years ago, but under no circumstance was taking another person's entire life away from them okay. He sighed, still unsure of the plan he'd developed. He had to somehow tell the ninja so they could get whatever had happened fixed. He sighed in frustration and looked up at the post office door, opening it slowly. And then he blinked, an idea coming to mind. He rushed inside and hauled his bag onto his back, grabbing his checklist and running through the recipients quickly. He silently cheered as he saw that the ninja had some mail, then quickly rushed out to his bike. Unchaining it expertly, he started on his route and developed a plan that hopefully would help him gain his rightful place in Ninjago once more.

Jack stood at the bottom of the tall mountain that he'd have to climb in order to ask for help. He'd thought hard about what he was going to do, and realized that if he was delivering mail, he could easily slip a letter of his own into the mix asking one of the ninja for help. That was what they did after all, right? Help people? Save Ninjago multiple times? He was sure that they would help him. Since he was apparently Cole, it was safe to assume that it wasn't safe to ask whoever Cole was for their assistance. He thought about giving Destiny a letter, but then remembered that she was supposed to be his girlfriend, and therefore was romantically engaged with the false Cole and thus not the safest bet he could make. Eventually, he settled on Jay, as he knew from Ferrah and his newfound memories that he was Destiny's cousin and could ask her for help if he deemed it safe enough.

Recipient decided, he set to work writing the contents, and after a few different copies, settled on a to-the-point letter, which read, "Jay, this is going to sound really strange, but as your best friend, I need you to trust me. Don't talk to 'Cole' about this, because it's not Cole. He stole my identity and I don't know who I can trust. I need you to help me get my life back. Please. Meet me at Zane's memorial at midnight so we can figure out how."

After rereading it several times, he decided not to leave his name at the bottom, since it might create confusion. Jack sighed and started his climb, tucking his "letter" into his bag after carefully mimicking the address information on the envelope.

When he finally reached the top of the mountain, he again took a moment to catch his breath. It was already rather late in the afternoon, and he knew he had to hurry if he wanted to be home on time. He looked at the monastery wall, remembering how it had been burned down for the longest time before being rebuilt. He blinked, snapping himself out of the memory, and then pressed the doorbell, the ringing not startling him this time. After a few moments the door opened, and he smiled. Then he realized it was Cole - No, Ornum, he reminded himself - and had to force himself to keep the smile. Ornum frowned a bit, and Jack realized that the glare he'd received from the imposter had been because of their history.

"Hi!" He heard a chipper voice call, and he looked around Ornum to see Destiny.

Jack smiled widely, a real one this time, and said, "Hello, Destiny."

The purple ninja pulled Ornum away from the door and motioned for him to come inside. Jack stepped into the monastery with a grin, leaning down into his bag as his stomach fluttered with sudden anxiety. "Fan mail for Kai, a letter for Cole, something for Destiny." He handed out the real mail and then looked around for Jay. When he found him, he said, "Two letters for Jay."

The Master of Lightning came over, and Jack handed him his mail, looking directly into his best friend's eyes as he reluctantly released it. Please help. Jay looked at him curiously, then down at the letters. He moved away, and Jack sighed, trying to calm his nerves.

After a moment, he slung his bag over his shoulders, glancing in Destiny's direction long enough to catch sight of Ornum kissing Destiny's head. His blood broiled with a mix of jealousy and anguish, but he turned and quickly started his long trek down the mountainside, using the emotions to push his sore legs forward.

As he travelled downward, he tried to console himself. She doesn't know. It isn't her fault. He was sure of the second part, but not so much the first. How was it possible that she didn't realize that Ornum wasn't him? He tried to find an answer, but gave up with a frustrated sigh.

When he finally got home, instead of sitting down in the living room or dining room as he usually did, he went straight to his sister's room, knocking on the door.

He heard her call, "Come in," and opened the door. She gave a happy shriek as he entered, attacking him with a hug that nearly toppled him.

"Careful, Fer!" He laughed, kneeling down to hug her back. "How was your day?"

"It was fine." She said with a smile. "I have some homework."

He nodded. "Okay. Hey, what can you tell me about Cole?" She smiled and rattled off twenty facts in the first minute, and Jack found them all to be true. He stopped her and asked, "Okay, who's his best friend?"

"Jay."

"Signature weapon?"

"Scythe."

"Element?"

"Master of Earth."

"History with Nya?"

"Love triangle between Jay and him. Jay's a much better match for Nya."

Jack agreed silently, pondering all that his sister knew and his vast history. "You really know the ninja, sis."

She smiled smugly. "Those are basic questions."

He chuckled. "I guess they are. There's definitely a lot more to Cole than meets the eye."

Jack stood, shivering, in the shadow of Zane's statue. He glanced at the base of the statue, checking that the canteen he brought was still sitting there. After hours of silently pondering why he and Destiny couldn't remember, he realized that drinking the tea had helped. If Jay came, it would probably help him to remember, too, if he couldn't by himself. So, he'd gone back to the tea shop and bought more tea, refusing this time to be discounted despite the larger cost.

A little while later, he heard footsteps, and he slid silently back into the shadows, wishing he had his black ninja robes on to better conceal him as his heart stuttered in silent fear.

The footsteps drew nearer, and he heard a voice whisper, "Hello? Person who wanted to meet at midnight?"

Jack let out a quiet breath of relief as he recognized Jay's voice and drew back into the light. "Yes. I'm here."

Jay gave him a confused look. "Wait, aren't you the mailman?"

He nodded. "Again, yes. Can you help me?"

Jay shifted a bit. "That depends on what kind of help."

"Help me get my life back." Jack told him, worry fluttering in his chest. "You believe me, right?"

"Believe is a strong word," Jay answered. "I've been friends with Cole for years. It's gonna take more than the words of a mailman to convince me he's not who I think he is."

Jack frowned and grabbed the canteen. "Here. Drink this, because you won't remember any of what I'm going to tell you."

Jay's expression grew confused as he took the tea. "What is it?"

"Tea of Enlightenment. I had to drink some myself to remember."

"Again, how can I trust you?" Jay asked. "This stuff might be poisoned for all I know-"

Jack sighed and took the drink from him, unscrewing the lid and taking a huge swallow from it before handing it back to him. "Please, drink it."

Jay looked surprised, but didn't argue. He started drinking the tea, and Jack started to tell him the months-long story of Ornum's torture. As Jay sipped and listened, Jack saw his eyes most over with more and more confusion. When he was done with his story, Jay said, "You're kidding me."

Jack watched him anxiously. Was that a good kidding me, or?

Jay leaped towards him suddenly, and Jack yelped as the elemental master wrapped him in a hug. After a moment, Jack hugged him back, smiling a little. Jay released him, saying, "I'm so sorry I didn't believe you! And I'm sorry I forgot!"

"Don't be," he reassured his friend. "I forgot myself. Now we can focus on putting things right."

"That's going to be hard. Destiny doesn't believe you. I doubt the others would."

Jack sighed. "I guess more tea is in order. The thing is, I don't have enough money to buy enough for everyone-"

"Leave that to me." Jay said. "Do you have any leaves left now?"

"A few. Why?"

His friend grinned, and Jack swallowed nervously as he recognized the mischief in his eyes. "Looks like Sensei's going to have a surprise in the morning."
