The Cursed Child
Children are supposed to be pure and innocent, raised to admire the world around them and learn of how the world works. Raised by their parents until they are ready to flourish and take on the world for themselves. Every child deserves a perfect childhood, filled with happiness, wonder and experiences that will mold them into the men and women of tomorrow's society. However such is life's unfairness to deny children this chance, oftentimes it is the circumstances of their birth that dictates this and for a young girl that is the case as well. This white haired child was born shortly before Christmas and was cherished by her mother and father, however that wouldn't be the case for very long.
In her infancy the child manifested a great power, capable of bending reality and turning back the proverbial hands of time. The manifestation of this power had turned the clock back on her father so far, that it had caused him to be wiped from existence. When her mother discovered her, she started to be neglected. As time passed, the child went from being the center of attention and love to a blight on the family name. Before she reached her 2nd birthday she was given to her grandfather and labeled a cursed child by her own mother. The grandfather of this child would try to protect her from the likes of his lackeys but he would fall victim to a rising villain named Overhaul. The experiments he forced this child through are unspeakable, sickening even the writer of this tale to even reiterate what he had done to her. That all changed when she met her hero in green.
That hero in green, had no idea who she was, he only knew her name. He only had suspicions of what the villains were doing to her but despite this, he still came to her aid. He and people just like him, risked everything to rescue her from the clutches of the eight precepts of death. Some of them lost their powers forever, had died or were seriously injured during this attempt. She couldn't wrap her head around it, why would they go through all that trouble just to rescue her? Risk their lives, their futures, their powers just to save a cursed child? She questioned him after she was rescued and got a simple answer. "Because that's what heroes do." Those five words rocked her to her core, she had only known tragedy from her earliest memory but now someone was there to be by her side. Not just someone but a whole society of heroes who would give anything and everything to save the helpless and aid the weak. Out of instinct she grasped on to him and began to cry, he was the first person to show her kindness through her entire life. The first person to go out of their way to help her having no idea who she was.
"It's alright Eri. I am here." he says in a calming voice as she starts sobbing into his shirt. "You've had a rough life, from now on you won't have to ever worry about getting hurt." he says rubbing his hand on her back in a gentle and fatherly manner.
"W-what a-about ch-ch-chisaki?" She stutters trying to say the name that brought her so much pain.
"You won't ever have to worry about him hurting you. He's gone. Forever." He responds, keeping his answer vague so she doesn't have to worry about him. "You're safe now, as long as I am near you, nothing will hurt you."
"W-why? I-I'm a c-cursed child..." Eri says through her sobs.
"Who told you that? The villains?"
"My Mommy." Izuku didn't even know how to think of something to respond to that statement. He merely hugged her tighter and began rocking the young girl back and forth in his arms.
"Do you believe that? Because I don't. I think you are a token of good luck. If it wasn't for your good luck, how would you have run into me?" He asks, this causes Eri to go silent for a moment thinking about what he is saying. "You are a very lucky girl, sure you had to deal with those villains but think of this. Your power is a gift and you were lucky to get it, you just so happened to run into me, the first time that you tried to escape them and that one time you tried to escape it led to your rescue. I think you are very lucky. Lucky to have endured, lucky to have been rescued and lucky to be here now."
"I-I..." She stammers as she buries her face into his chest and embraces him. It was evident she was touch starved and mentally broken due to what they had done to her.
"I will always be there for you, Eri." Izuku says feeling her tighten her grip around him.
"Th-thank you... Daddy." She says out of instinct not even catching what she had said as sleep takes her.
Izuku remained silent after hearing her address him as that, to say he was shocked is an understatement. This child that he barely knew for over a day has just addressed him as her father, he had a series of mixed emotions running through him. Pride? Nervousness? Contentment? Uncertainty? He couldn't place the feeling but he was happy that she was safe and that is all that mattered. Unknown to him, his teacher had been outside the room, listening to the conversation he was having with the young girl. The hobo looking hero couldn't help but smile hearing how much his student had grown and how soon he had taken the initiative to be the father figure in the girl's life. However, something worried him, the council of heroes over the province they were in would have the final decision for what to do with the child and it would be unlikely that they would put her into the protective custody of a 16 year old hero in training. He knew that he would have to get the evidence to support his argument in the hearing the council would eventually hold. So, he clicked off the recorder he was using and pocketed the small device before pulling out his phone and making a call.
"Nezu. I'm going to need you to pull some strings for me and no it is not a raise. It is about the child rescued during the raid. I need you to provide me a list of things, starting with Nighteye's will. He had spoken to me after they had the first encounter with the child and said that he had foreseen his own death and that he would write something into his will that will assure the girl's safety going forwards. Second, I will need the adoption papers for her... No, I am not adopting her... Midoriya is... Why? Because I am at the hospital where they are and just heard her address him as Dad... Are you really asking me how he will provide for her? You don't even know the meaning of the word budget. Give him a credit card or something I don't know... Why am I doing this? I'll tell you that when I figure it out for myself too." Aizawa says into his phone before hanging up and looking in through the glass on the door. The scene makes him smile, Eri is lying on top of Izuku out cold as he has his arms wrapped around her back in a protective manner, both fast asleep.
The door to the small hospital room clicks open, raising Izuku from his sleep. The morning sun is piercing through the blinds of the room forcing him to squint as the light hits his eyes. He shifts out of the way of the light before looking about the room he is in, and more specifically the person who opened the door. He relaxes slightly as it's only Principal Nezu who arrived with Aizawa that morning. He listens to them speak to each other a moment before stretching and sitting up in the bed. Both adults don't notice this and continue talking amongst themselves while Izuku merely listens in on what they are saying.
"I am just here to assure what you said is true Mr Aizawa, nothing more is all. I have also brought the things you have asked for." Nezu says cordially, handing Aizawa a manilla envelope.
"Thank you, I have the feeling this is going to be one hell of a legal battle so I needed Sir Nighteye's will or at least a copy of it. Reason being is that his hero agency is responsible for the well being of the child until she can be reunited with her next of kin or an adoptee/foster home. He mentioned he would write something down for me specifically in this document, so this will be the work around for the legal issues." Aizawa monologues as he goes through the documents. "Rest in Peace, Sir Nighteye, but thank you for your foresight. 'I Mirai Sasaki, in the event of my untimely death at the hands of the Shie Hissaikai, I name UA as the sole guardian over any and all children rescued in the raid that cannot be returned to their next of kin.' Good thinking Mirai, you were always one step ahead."
"Now is the matter of giving the documents to the council of heroes, we have no idea who or where the mother of young Eri, was it?" Nezu asks, getting a nod from Aizawa. "Thank you, now since we have no idea of her whereabouts, it may go down to a foster family to care for Eri which is when we show the documentation to the council. From there, all that is left is for the adoption papers to be sig-"
"I'll do it." Izuku says alerting the two adults in the room.
"Signed... Well, good morning Midoriya. We were just discussing the ramifications of what is to be done with Eri after the raid. I presumed that you would want to take her in, so I believe my assumptions are correct." Nezu says hoisting himself up onto one of the visitor's chairs next to the bed.
"W-w-who are th-they D-Daddy?" Eri stammers as she clutches to Izuku for protection.
"My teacher, Mr Aizawa, and the principal of my school, Mr Nezu. It's alright, they're not going to hurt you." Izuku reassures her, patting his hand on her back trying to calm her down.
"Well you were right in saying that she has already imprinted on him, I didn't believe that to be the case but, you weren't lying." Nezu chuckles, getting the girl's attention. Eri looks at him quizzically not knowing if he is a person or a creature or... both?
"I'm the one who could be a mouse or a dog or a bear but that doesn't matter, I'm the principal!" Eri just stares at him, now even more confused as to what he is.
"I overheard what she had said to you last night, problem child. What she had also called you so, I had principal nezu dig up the requisite paperwork needed for the custody battle after this is all over. In the meantime, she is going to stay with you until we get this resolved but, judging by the look on your face you're probably just going to go above the heads of the hero's council anyways." Aizawa smirks seeing the determined look on Izuku's face.
"However, before she can be discharged, they need to run a few diagnostics on her, nothing too bad just the run of the mill check up. There will be no blood test so she won't have to worry." One of the doctors interrupts as he enters the room, he had been standing at the door for almost 20 minutes waiting for a chance to speak up.
"You hear that Eri? No blood. They just have to check a couple things and we can leave. I know you were sick for a little bit after the raid but all they have to do now is just a check up. I'll be by your side the entire time." Izuku says assuredly picking her up and cradling her in his arms trying to calm her down.
"O-ok daddy." The doctor brought out a thermometer and asked Eri to open her mouth to gauge her temperature to have it read normal. Next, he felt her pulse just to make sure it's circulating at a propper rate for her age. He then checked her breathing, ear canals, the inside of her throat, and her eye pupils for everything to turn out for the most part normal. The major thing though that the doctor did find was that Eri was a bit underweight for her age as well as slight signs of malnutrition. As a way to cope with this, the doctor wrote a prescription for an over the counter weight gain mix that he'd want her to drink in the morning as well as some vitamin syrups that would increase her vitamin count.
"Ok. As far as health goes, you are a little under the average in some parts such as weight and nutrition. However, we somewhat came to the conclusion of that when you came in. As such, I'd like her to be on a few medicines for the next month or so before having another checkup. The weight gain mixture I'd like her to take until she gains about 4, preferably 5 kilograms. This'll put her in the average percentile range for someone her age and height. I am also a tad concerned for her muscle strength, skin discoloration and bone density since she's been confined for long periods of time. I recommend if she goes into direct sunlight to put some sunscreen on her for now and do some exercises to increase her natural strength. Something fun like swimming or hiking and exploring the outside world."
"O-ok..." Izuku wrote down everything he could in his notebook so that he can keep a log of everything he should do. "Is there anything else I should be aware of?"
"Yes, but I would like you to come outside and discuss this with me in private."
"Ok. Eri, do you mind waiting here with my teachers while I speak to the nice doctor?" Eri nodded for her to move off Izuku's lap and let him get up.
As they shut the door, the doctor began explaining something he didn't want to point out in front of Eri. "I'm sure you're aware that the type of neglect and struggle this child has gone through is not normal, correct?" Izuku nodded. "When she was alone, she began to seclude in on herself believing everything that was bad around her happened because of her from what a specialist that was here when she was admitted said. She will most likely suffer from severe PTSD as well as be extremely reluctant to trust people. Due to this, I'm worried you do not understand the severity of what she has gone through and that the road to recovery for her will be a long and agonizing one. I have appointed a child psychologist to be hired by UA to help with her weekly."
"I...I might not be able to fully comprehend it, but I will try for Eri's sake." Izuku looked at the doctor determined for him to glance inside the window to see Eri somewhat shaking while holding a pillow to distance herself from Aizawa and Nezu.
"Right now, that girl hardly trusts anyone. The only real connection she has made is with you and that blonde boy that tried to save her as well. You need to get her to understand that the people she encountered are not the common people. She believes everyone has the ability to harm her and may for no reason. She needs structure. More than anything, she needs to know she can rely and trust on others instead of just you. Do you think you can do that, son?"
"I'll do what I can. Eri needs this and I'm not going to pull her away from that."
The doctor patted his back before they went towards the front desk to finish up the discharging. On the way back, Izuku was texted by Nezu and Aizawa to bring Eri with them for a hero board meeting in regards to her. He knew this wouldn't be easy, but the better things in life never were.
