[US] Chapter 8: My Voice, Their Truth
Night's inky cloak enveloped the capital city of Edoras. The light from the oil lamps on the streets cast flickering shadows into Rober's small room at the Moon Inn. The space was quiet, save for the rustling of paper and the faint scratching of a fountain pen nib.
Rober sat upright at his desk, a thick stack of blank paper before him. Beside it sat a pot of deep black ink, and a polished brass fountain pen. He took a deep breath, focusing intently, and began the preparations for the crucial information exchange tomorrow.
Within his mind, the Sage System was active, providing a vast amount of information about Peter Horisderm, the human trafficker that Jacob Yasei, the journalist from The Edoras Chronicle, was hunting. Rober carefully selected, organized, and meticulously recorded the information in neat, clear handwriting:
The file on subject Peter Horisderm, alias "Mister Pi" revealed a dangerous and organized human trafficker. He was approximately 45 to 50 years old, born in the village of Rocab, now abandoned, with Edoras citizenship. With a tall, thin build 1.80m, greying black hair, and a long scar on his left cheek, Peter created a cold impression with his sharp, ash-grey eyes. He had a habit of smoking expensive cigars, drinking strong liquor, and constantly changing his residence. His hobbies included reading history and philosophy books, playing chess very well, and collecting antiques, especially from lost civilizations.
Peter had no family, his wife and child died in a suspicious fire and limited social relationships, mainly serving his vast criminal network. This network included human traffickers, prostitution brokers, protection racketeers, loan sharks, document forgers, and even corrupt officials and police officers.
Peter's modus operandi was to pose as a recruiter, targeting young girls from poor rural areas, promising them good jobs in the city. He used "bait" to approach and exploit the victims' psychological vulnerabilities or difficult circumstances. He then transported them discreetly, imprisoned them in secret locations, and controlled them through force and threats. His main purpose was sexual exploitation, forced labor, and there were even suspicions of organ trafficking.
Peter's network operated in major cities within the country and showed signs of expanding internationally. He was at the top, managing all activities, with the support of close "right-hand men" intermediary "links" and "bait" who directly deceived the victims. They communicated using codes. Evidence being collected included victim testimonies, forged documents, audio and video recordings, and physical traces, unverified. Previously, Peter frequented bars, casinos, brothels, underground auctions, and private clubs, but his current whereabouts were unknown due to his habit of constantly moving.
Rober didn't just stop at recording information. He also used his sketching skills, a skill he had honed since his time in the village, to draw a portrait of Peter Horisderm. He drew two: one close-up portrait, focusing on details such as: his eyes, the shape of his nose and mouth, and especially distinctive identifying features, scars, moles... The other was a full-body sketch, showing his build, clothing style, and demeanor.
Night deepened before Rober finished his work. He carefully organized the documents into a complete file, placing the two portraits on top. He leaned back in his chair, sighing with satisfaction, pleased with what he had prepared.
The next morning, Rober arrived at "The Quill & Inkwell" at the appointed time. He chose the familiar table in the secluded corner, ordered a black coffee, and patiently waited.
A short while later, Jacob Yasei appeared. He was still wearing his usual attire, but today he looked more tired and stressed. His eyes were sunken and bloodshot.
"Good morning" Rober said, smiling.
Jacob didn't reply, only silently sat down opposite Rober, placing a stack of documents on the table.
"This is the information about the Royal Academy that you requested" Jacob said, his voice hoarse. "Biographies, profiles, achievements of the professors, and information about the members of the board of directors and shareholders."
Rober nodded, taking the stack of documents. "Thank you, Jacob. And here is what I promised." He pushed the file towards Jacob, along with the two portraits.
Jacob took the file and began to read attentively. The more he read, the wider his eyes became, his expression turning to astonishment. When he read the detailed descriptions of the methods of operation, the network, and the locations associated with Peter Horisderm, his hands trembled.
Finally, he flipped to the two portraits. Seeing the face of the man he had been hunting for so long, Jacob couldn't contain himself, jumping up from his chair, his voice shaking:
"It's him! It's those eyes... I'll never forget them!"
Rober noticed Jacob's agitation, he guessed that behind the request for information about Peter Horisderm, it was not simply for the purpose of writing an article or investigation. Jacob's hateful eyes showed that there was a story, a deeper secret.
"Do you need any further help from me, Jacob?" Rober asked, his tone sincere.
Jacob shook his head, trying to regain his composure. "No... no need. This information is more than enough. Thank you, Rober. Thank you so much."
He sat down, took a deep breath, and continued: "I... I wanted to ask you for your contact information, for future use."
Rober smiled, shaking his head. "That won't be necessary, Jacob. We'll meet again soon."
Jacob understood Rober's meaning. Clearly, Rober didn't want to be passive, didn't want Jacob to be the one initiating contact. But for Jacob, this was more than enough. The information Rober provided, detailed and incredibly accurate, was an invaluable gift to him. He understood that Rober had his own reasons for keeping his identity confidential, and he needed to respect that.
"Alright, Rober" Jacob said. "I'm ready for any future meetings." He stood up, bowed respectfully to Rober, and left the cafe.
Rober sat back, took a sip of coffee, and slowly flipped through the documents Jacob had provided. He smiled with satisfaction. Now, he had another important source of information, a source that could actively make requests, instead of passively relying on the Sage System. He knew that this cooperation would help him get closer to his goal, and open up new opportunities he had never thought of.
