Chapter Fourteen

"No! Softheather, she had gone this way!"
Softheather heard Batsun, but she couldn't see him. The fox wasnt looking at her anymore, but it was looking where the voice had come from.
Suddenly, the patrol emerged. Batsun was at the lead, soon followed the rest of the patrol. They hissed and growled, spiking their fur up.
They all lunged for the fox at the same time. It stumbled back in surprise. It soon gained the lead, though. It clawed and scratched at every warrior.
Softheather chose now to jump down on it's back. The fox yowled in fury and rage, and even confusion. The rest of the patrol were also confused, but didnt stop.
Softheather clawed and scratched it's back, until it started to bleed. She climbed up further, scratching at its eyes. Suddenly, the fox started running to escape.
Softheather jumped off of it, and chased it. It was heading toward Thicketclan.
When she reached the border, she stopped. She gasped for breath. She had no scratches on her, while the rest of the patrol were filled with them.
She flopped to the ground, trying to catch her breath, when the patrol emerged again. They looked worried.
"Softheather! Are you okay? Who's blood was on the fox?" Marigoldshadow was worried and was sniffing her pelt.
"Spottedrose, go tell Squirrelstar what happened. Make sure they medicine cat is waiting for us to return." Batsun growled. Spottedrose nodded once and took off.
"Softheather, why were you in a tree?" Redbark growled.
But Softheather couldn't answer any questions. She lay on the ground, panting. She had chased the fox through half of the territory. And now it was in Thicketclan. Wait... Thicketclan!
"Thicketclan... fox... must be.... warned." Softheather managed to say. Redbark turned her gaze into the territory. The fox had crossed the river, leaving blood in the water.
"We'll worry about that later. We need to get to camp. Can you walk?" Batsun asked. Softheather tried to stand, but sunk back down.
"Go without me. I'll be fine. Ill crawl to somewhere safe... until I'm stronger to leave. I shouldn't of ran that fast. Especially after climbing the trees." She whispered, and coughed a few times.
"Softheather, answer me. Why were you in the trees? You could've got hurt!" Redbark said again, louder this time.
Marigoldshadow shook her head. "I say we dont worry about it yet. It gave her an advantage, and she was the one who hurt the fox to make it run." Marigoldshadow meowed, turning to meet Redbark's gaze.
"Okay. Softheather, Redbark is going to stay. Me and Marigoldshadow are going to go back and send a patrol including a medicine cat." Batsun said, turning to Redbark to see if it was okay. She nodded.
They left leaving only Redbark and Softheather.
"I'm sorry. I spotted a squirrel. I caught it, if it makes you any happier." She whispered.
Redbark chuckled. "You are the type of cat to get it trouble, but also succeed doing so."
"But, I did really good. I chased that squirrel through tons of trees, without losing my balance once!" Softheather smiled.
Redbark's eyes sparkled with laughter.
"You take after your father. He soared through trees after trees. Cats wanted to be like him. So who taught you? I know I sure didnt." She laughed.
My father was good at it?
Softheather smiled. "I'm not even sure. It was an in-the-moment thing." Redbark laughed.
They sat in silence for awhile before a patrol returned. Squirrelstar was in the lead, followed by Lakeshadow and Gingerfleck.
"Palesky is giving birth. Flowerleap is showing Cypresspaw how to do it. I brought Gingerfleck here because he knows a few things. Me and Lakeshadow are going to go to Thicketclan to warn them about the fox." Squirrelstar then smiled at Redbark. "Your in charge while I'm gone." Then he licked her head and him and Lakeshadow stepped over the border.
Redbark was smiling now, as Gingerfleck examined Softheather.
"How do you feel?" He asked.
"Just tired. I didnt get hurt, it's just that I ran across half the territory chasing the fox out. It backfired when it crossed the border, though." Gingerfleck nodded.
"Can you stand?" He asked. Softheather stood up. Her legs ached, but she felt way better now.
"I feel much better now. Before we go, I'm going to pick up my squirrel in that tree. It'll be a good meal for the clan." Gingerfleck shook his head.
"Your in no condition to climb. Your going straight back to camp." He said sternly.
"I'll get the squirrel, Softheather. And I'll make sure everyone knows you caught it." Redbark winked.
