WHY AM I SO UGLY?
{You guys can reply with encouraging comments to Hazelkit}
"Momma? Why is that kit so ugly?" a kit mewed. I sighed as the kit's mother told him to hush. I was used to these comments, my parents said this and more then half of WindClan thought of me as ugly or disfigured.
I walked away and sat next to my sister Poppykit. Our mother, Sunpoppy, glanced at us from where she was grooming my brothers and growled. "Get away from Poppykit, you disgusting she-kit!" I flinched as Sunpoppy's familiar angry amber eyes glared at me.
"Sunpoppy," Poppykit mewed angerily. "Stop being mean to my sister."
"That ugly thing has no right of calling you her sister!" Sunpoppy sneered. Poppykit fluffed up her dark ginger fur and slowly stood in front of me. Our brothers, Crowkit and Cloudkit, got up to and stood beside Poppykit. Cloudkit hissed loudly and made his light gray pelt cover me by puffing his chest out. Crowkit turned pawed the ground, his black paws leaving marks in the sand.
"If you want to hurt Hazelkit, you'll have to hurt us too!" Crowkit growled. Cloudkit and Poppykit nodded angrily. I pushed myself between Crowkit and Cloudkit and layed my sideways ears against my head.
"Get that thing away from me!" Sunpoppy reared back and struck a golden tabby paw out to my face. I squealed as her claws scratched my nose and scrambled back to a tiny hole that Sunpoppy made me sleep in. "She is ugly!"
Poppykit raced over to me and curled her russet colored pelt around my gray one. "Don't worry Hazelkit," Poppykit purred. "Your beautiful."
Crowkit walked to us and rubbed his black face against mine. "Yeah Hazelkit, I'm proud to call you my sister." Crowkit sat next to my head and gently groomed it like a mother would.
"Besides, Sunpoppy doesn't see you the way she should see you." Cloudkit turned his head to Sunpoppy as he walked over to us. I purred thanks to him and layed my paw on his as he touched my bobbed tail.
"Get away from her!" Sunpoppy screeched and threw herself to us. She grabbed my scruff and ran outside the nursery. I cried out as she handed me to my father Hawkclaw. Hawkclaw hissed loudly as he saw my face. I squealed again, this time kicking out my skinny legs.
"What are you doing with Hazelkit?" Sunpoppy's sister Honeyfern meowed. "She looks terrified."
We were outside of the camp, the three of us plus Honeyfern who had been hunting. Sunpoppy looked at Hawkclaw and nodded her sleek head. Hawkclaw put me down on the cold forest floor and swiftly walked towards Honeyfern. "We're just playing a game," Hawkclaw purred smoothly. "So, did you catch any thing good?"
Honeyfern stared at the bigger cat in surprise and mewed quietly. "Well, I caught a couple mice and a pigeon." Honeyfern pawed the ground nervously and looked at her sister. "I caught the pigeon for you, Sunpoppy."
"Thanks Honeyfern, now, where is the prey that you caught?" Sunpoppy growled. She walked to Honeyfern in a serious matter. "You know, in case something happens and we all need to get to it."
"I hid it behind the old mossy stump," Honeyfern said cautiously. "But wh-" Her next word ended in a screech of pain.
Sunpoppy had leaped onto her sister and sunk her teeth into Honeyfern's golden neck. I watched in horror as Honeyfern fell to the ground, the life draining from her beautiful blue eyes. Sunpoppy shook her head, sending blood flying from her muzzle. She pawed Honeyfern's limp body and mumbled. "If only she didn't stick her nose where it shouldn't have been."
Why am I so ugly? I thought as Hawkclaw and Sunpoppy brought me back to the camp while carrying Honeyfern's prey. I ran into the nursery and curled up in my hole as Poppykit curled next to me and huffed with sadness for me.
