❝ ᴛ-ᴛᴀᴇʏᴏɴɢ? ❞
Mark was annoyed. He was so annoyed at the fact that Donghyuck was with him one day, and then the other he was gone. It was weird, feeling someone's absence even if it was just for 24 hours, but it had an impact on Mark. He would look around the house, unable to find Donghyuck, mostly because the building was too big for Mark to search alone, and because the third floor was completely shut off and he wasn't allowed there. He suspected that's where Donghyuck lived.
When Mark asked the other kids, they all gave vague answers, saying something along the lines of,
"Ask Donghyuck, we can't tell you."
Or,
"Has he not told you yet? Surprising."
And everytime Mark would gather up the confidence to question Donghyuck himself, he would get shut down by a ,'nowhere'.
Mark uncontrollably tapped his foot on the ground as he got more and more annoyed. Why were the group always keeping a secret from him. They sat away from him at lunch, whispered things to each other whenever they thought Mark wasn't looking, and didn't even tell him why Donghyuck was missing. The teacher groaned and then turned around to snap at Mark, who was now creating a loud and annoying noise by his tapping.
"Mark, can you please stop?" His teacher said, putting his hand on the table and raising his eyebrow at Mark, who licked his lips and then nodded, but continued tapping his foot. "I said can you-"
Before the teacher could say anything else, a loud thunder sound was heard outside, and everyone in the classroom gasped. The sound was then followed by more roars and the entire class went quiet. The windows suddenly shattered and glass shards flew out towards students. A few people cried out in pain as their arms got pierced, whilst the others rushed to help those hurt. Mark shakily glanced around the room and then told everyone to leave. The students wasted no time to rush out of the doors, trailing behind the other students in the hallways down the corridor.
Mark ran over to the window and looked up, eyes widening as he saw a large grey cloud covering the sky above their school. He bit his lip as he realised it must've been him, and he must've caused the storm by his thoughts.
"My stupid stupid emotions!" Mark whispered to himself, face palming.
"Mark!" Renjun yelled, hurrying over to Mark's side after searching for him the second the storm started. "Stop the storm!"
"I don't know how to!" Mark replied, closing his eyes and taking deep breaths, but nothing happened. The storm only worsened and the building started to shake. Rain started pouring down and bright flashes of light blinded everyone. "Renjun, how do I stop the storm?!"
"Calm down!" Renjun answered, not exactly knowing how to help Mark. That was normally Donghyuck's job. He was the one who calmed Jeno down and managed to help Jisung discover a way to stop using his power all the time. "Let's get out of here first."
The two speedily got out of the building, which was on the verge of collapsing, and then scanned the crowd, trying to find the other kids. A hand pressed onto Mark's shoulder and he was jerked backwards.
"Stop the storm Mark." Donghyuck said in a soft voice, holding Mark in place.
"I don't know how to." Mark said, frowning as Donghyuck's expression remained the same. "I didn't start this storm on purpose! How am I supposed to stop it? How did you stop it last time?"
"I knocked you out." Donghyuck replied, remembering how he hit Mark's face in order to stop the storm. Seeing how Mark grimaced before opening his mouth to perhaps tell him to do that again, Donghyuck quickly spoke up. "But I want you to learn how to control your emotions instead of me just making you fall unconscious every time."
"But-" Before Mark could saying anything else, screams echoed the place and it was suddenly getting darker and darker. Mark looked up and his jaw dropped at what he saw. Large pieces of debris and were falling from the sky and they were heading straight for them. "Run!"
Mark pushed people, trying to get them out of the way, and the others tried to help them. Donghyuck paused and looked back up, then down at the others. He knew they wouldn't be able to save everyone at this rate. He stopped walking and glanced around, seeing how everyone was too scared to even look his way. Donghyuck put his hands on the ground and took a deep breath, gathering his power into them.
Mark turned to Donghyuck, who was now kneeling down on the floor, waiting for the last couple of people to run past him, and quickly sprinted over to him.
"What are you doing?" Mark asked, worryingly stealing glances at the building pieces that were getting closer and closer by the second. Donghyuck chose to ignore him and then raised his head to check if everyone was gone.
"This whole thing is happening by someone with powers." Donghyuck said, ice slowly leaking through his hands and over the ground. It started to build up, going across the side of the crowd of students and then it jumped up, creating a large arch over them. "It can't be only one person."
"What do you mean?" Mark snapped his head at Donghyuck, who was focusing on producing more layer of ice to protect them all. "More than one person? Why would you think that?"
"Weather."
The blocks hit against the ice Donghyuck had made and it broke up bits of it. The students, who had no idea what was happening, continued to run and try to find a way out of the school building. Half of them managed to escape, whilst the others were stuck between the gates with a bunch of others.
"Weather?" Mark questioned, putting his hand on Donghyuck's back. Donghyuck nodded, breathing heavily as more rocks fell onto the ice and threatened to break it.
"This storm couldn't have been made by you." Donghyuck answered, clenching his fists and then trying to stand up, realising that the rock attack had stopped. "Meaning someone with weather powers was doing this. And by more than one person, I mean that it's clear someone with the ability to either create objects from thin air was helping them, or someone who can make objects levitate."
"Uh..." Mark simply nodded, not understanding what he meant by this. "Shit, let's check on the others."
Mark and Donghyuck walked quickly down the path towards the gates and looked around. The school building was completely destroyed, and the clouds blocking the sunlight had dispersed. Broken building parts were spread over the floor, and small fires had started. Mark narrowed his eyes at the mess and wondered how they had managed to even survive through that, and then thought about how strong Donghyuck must've been to be able to handle that.
"Wait." Donghyuck paused, holding a hand up to stop Mark. Footsteps could be heard from their sides and Mark immediately froze. The sound of the footsteps got closer, before they stopped and Mark caught something on his right move. He abruptly turned his head towards the sound, quietly groaning at the pain he felt in his neck, and his eyes widened at the sight.
"T-Taeyong?" Mark coughed, walking forwards to follow the purple haired male into the smokey area, but Donghyuck quickly pinched him.
"Don't go there." Donghyuck warned, eyeing the dark figure disappear further into the smoke. "It's not safe."
"But that was Taeyong!" Mark exclaimed, trying to push away the arm Donghyuck had managed to snake around his waist, but failed to do so. "I'm so sure it was my brother! Donghyuck I need to see my brother!"
"Mark!" Donghyuck slapped his hand over Mark's mouth and advised him to take a deep breath and calm down. "Listen, even if it was your brother, you can't go there, it's not safe. We'll try to find your brother later, okay, but right now we need to get somewhere safe.
At first, Mark hesitated. The brother that ran away from his house when he was only ten had finally reappeared, strangely enough in the midst of a large attack from unknown people. Mark wanted to find his brother, ask him where he was this whole time, and why he had decided to leave Mark and their family behind. But he couldn't. He knew Donghyuck was telling him to do the right thing and return to home, make sure that everyone else is safe before heading on his selfish journey to find the brother who probably doesn't even care about him.
And so, Mark lowered his head and stopped resisting. Donghyuck quickly took action and lead Mark through the dust, covering his eyes to stop the particles from getting into their eyes.
The second they got out of the area, the students who were hurt from whatever had happened were being helped into ambulances, and people with cameras were taking multiple pictures of the place. Mark stayed quiet as Renjun and the others gathered around them and asked questions about where they were. Donghyuck answered some, and then signalled for them to stop talking, since Mark seemed pretty down by the incident.
When they reached home, after managing to escape the clutches of the policemen and trainee doctors that had accompanied them to the school, Mark and the kids separated and went to their own rooms, too tired and exhausted to speak about the attack.
Mark bit down on his lip as he thought back to his brother. Why was the there? And where was he for the past few years? The questions continued to build up inside of Mark as he thought more and more about his brother.
He wondered if the attack was somehow linked to his brothers random reappearance.
