Oh my God,
PLEASE DO YOUR FUCKIN RESEARCH ON YOUR OCS MENTAL ILLNESSES
My first thing that needs to be pushed in that mental illness isn't a personality trait. It needs to be handled with thought.
And I'm going to say it in caps so that you'll hear me well enough:
IF YOU PLAY MENTAL ILLNESS INCORRECTLY YOU ARE DISRESPECTING EVERY PERSON WHO HAS TO LIVE WITH IT.
Why does mental illness need to played so seriously?
Well.. It's because if mental health continues to be stigmatized, we as a society will continue to find it taboo to talk about. A lack of open, respectful conversation leads to these stereotypes being believed by the public and this paints people with mental illness as dangerous when they're also just people trying to live their life.
You may ask, how do I play mental illness, Mrs.Tasia?
Well, you've come to the wrong place. I'd you don't know how to play mental illness then don't.
Anyways here are some tropes that especially annoy me:
- The "sexy" psycho girl.
First of all, being psychotic isn't sexy, fetishizing mental illness is not and never will be okay. Not to mention these kinds of characters are just annoying
- The ones who have PTSD... Sometimes..
You know them, their PSTD only acts up when they need attention or when it's convenient for them.
- The ones with "the voices that make them do it!!"
It's extremely dangerous for anyone to even think that mentally ill people have voices that control them. You can't just make up a mental illness. It's disrespectful.
- The ones who you can clearly tell haven't been researched
It's easy to tell when you haven't done research on your ocs illness. Google exists, Youtube exists.
- The depressed one who's just gloomy all the time
And I mean as in their just fucking pessimistic, no depressive episodes. Just them being sad all the time. Go do some fucking research.
