FIVE

"...date night, Saturday night, Sa–tur–day night!"

----------

"Will you let it go? It's not that big a deal." Monica chuckled slightly at her brother.

"Not that big a deal? It's amazing, okay? You just reach in there, there's one little maneuver, and bam! A bra right out the sleeve." Ross replied. "As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing a guy can do that even comes close."

"Okay, can we move on from this topic if I showed it?" I asked, debating whether or not I should bang my head on my crutches.

"Yes." Ross and Joey looked up at me while Chandler scoffed in disgust.

"Come on! You guys can pee standing up." Rachel pointed out.

"We can? Okay, I'm trying that." Chandler looked over at Joey.

"You know what blows my mind? Women can see breasts anytime they want." Joey said. "You just look down, and there they are." He pretended to look down. "How you get work done is beyond me." He shrugged his shoulders.

"Okay, you know what I don't get? The way guys do so many mean things and then not even care." Phoebe added, making the four girls look at the guys angrily. They stayed quiet for a couple of moments.

"Multiple orgasms." Ross pointed at us.

"There you go." The three guys agreed with each other.

"I am this close to paying someone to run me over." I groaned tiredly.

A little later, we were still at Central Perk, just hanging around with each other.

"So, Saturday night, the big night, date night, Saturday night, Sa–tur–day night!" Chandler cheered and danced quite awkwardly.

"No plans, huh?" Joey asked him.

"Not a one." Chandler replied with sarcastic cheeriness before sitting down.

"What about, say, breaking up with Janice?" Ross inquired.

"Oh, right, right. Shut up." Chandler pointed his finger at his best friend.

"Chandler, nobody likes breaking up with someone. You just go to do it." She replied.

"I know, but it's just so hard, you know? I mean, you're sitting there with her. She has no idea what's happening. And then you finally get up the courage to do it, and there's that horribly awkward moment when you've handed her the note..." We were following along but lost it when he added the last part.

"Why do you have to break up with her?" Joey asked. "Be a man. Just stop calling her." I hit Joey's shoulder for the horrible advice.

"You better do something, Chandler. I really don't want her as a sister–in–law." I got chills from the mere thought of it. Joey rubbed my back.

"If you want, I'll do it with you." Phoebe suggested kindly.

"Thanks, but I think she'd feel like we're ganging up on her." Chandler leaned back in his chair.

"No, I mean, you break up with Janice, and I'll break up with Tony." Phoebe clarified.

"You're breaking up with Tony?" Monica looked at her sadly.

"Yeah, I know. He's sweet, but it's just not fun anymore. I don't know if it's me or his hunger strike, or...I don't know." She shook her head.

"Does anybody want anything else?" Rachel asked us tiredly.

"Oh, yeah. Last week, you had a wonderful nutty, chocolaty kind of a cakey pie–thing..." He stopped when he saw the look on Rachel's face while she tapped on the notebook. "Nothing. Just, just...I'm fine." He replied.

"What's the matter, Rach?" Phoebe glanced at her. "Why so scrunchy?"

"It's my father." She sat down on the arm of the couch. "He wants to give me Mercedes Convertible." She groaned.

"That guy...he burns me up." Ross shook his head.

"I can dye my hair blonde and pretend to be you." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Yeah, well, it's a Mercedes if I move back home. Ugh, it's horrible. He called me 'young lady'." She scoffed angrily.

"Ooh, I hate when my father calls me that." Chandler responded sarcastically.

"Did he give you that whole 'you're not up for this' thing again?" Monica let out a sigh.

"I actually got the extended disco version with three choruses of 'you'll never make it on your own'." She nodded her head.

"Hi, Joey." We looked back to see a blonde bimbo walk behind the couch but not before giving him a smirk.

"Oh my God, Angela." He sat up straight.

"Being dumped by you obviously agrees with her." Monica said, giving me a sad look.

"Are you going to go over there?" I leaned back on the couch.

"No. Yeah. No." He couldn't make up his mind. "Okay, but not yet. I don't want to seem too eager." He leaned back. "One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi...that seems pretty cool." He nodded his head before heading towards her. Rachel continued working while Ross tried to ask her out.

"Got a date tonight, Suparna?" Monica nudged my shoulder.

"I cancelled on three guys. Joey and I were supposed to go to my apartment for movies and food." I crossed my arms over my chest. I was upstairs at my place folding laundry when Joey walked in. I should never have given him a key.

"Suparna, I'm sorry. I forgot that we had plans for tonight." He handed me clothes from the pile.

"Don't worry about it. I can always stay home alone." I shrugged my shoulders.

"Let me make it up to you. I made us a double date with Angela." We sat at my dining table while he tried to convince me. "This guy is great for you."

"Forget it, Joey. Not after your cousin who could belch the alphabet." I shuddered in disgust.

"Come on." He chuckled a little. "This guy's amazing. His name's Bob. He's Angela's...brother. He's smart, he's sophisticated, and he has a real job." He explained. "Me, I go on three auditions a month and call myself an actor, but Bob is—"

"Oh, God, help us." I limped over to look out my window.

"What?" He came over to me, wrapping an arm around my waist for support.

"Ugly naked guy's laying kitchen tiles." We tilted our heads a little and groaned in disgust. "Joey, could you get me my crutches?" He grabbed them and positioned them under my arms. Now I was able to walk away from him quickly.

"Look, I'm asking a favor here." I grabbed my purse. "You know, I'm thinking that if I do this thing for her brother, maybe Angela will come back to me." He looked down at me. But I'm here for you right now, I thought.

"What's going on here? You go out with tons of girls." I cleared my throat and looked at my boot.

"I know, but...Look, I made a huge mistake." He sat down on my coffee, so I sat down next to him. "I never should have broken up with her. Will you help me? Please?" He asked. I sighed but nodded my head. Later that evening, Joey and I headed over to Florello's to wait for Angela and Bob. The bartender handed me a red wine and Joey a beer.

"What does this Bob guy look like? Is he tall? Short?" I took a sip of the wine.

"Yup." Joey nodded his head and put down the beer bottle.

"Which?" I raised an eyebrow, slightly suspicious of this whole double date.

"Which what?" He asked me.

"You've never met Bob, have you?" I put down my glass and crossed my arms over my chest.

"No, but he's—" He tried to explain.

"Oh my God, Joey! This guy could be—" I exclaimed.

"Hey, Joey!" The two of us looked over to see Angela and her...brother.

"Horrible attractive. I'll be shutting up now." Tonight was the first night I decided not to use the crutches so I could walk freely. Kind of. Joey still helped just in case, and I was grateful. The four of us were at the bar. "So where di you two grow up?" I asked.

"Brooklyn Heights." Angela answered.

"Cleveland." Bob nodded his head. I kept the smile on my face and furrowed my brows.

"How did that happen?" I chuckled a little.

"Oh my God!" Joey exclaimed, making the three of us look at him.

"What?" I asked him.

"I, uh...suddenly had the feeling I was...falling." He stuttered out. "But I'm not." He chuckled and nodded his head. Angela and I were in the bathroom while Bob and Joey were sitting and talking at the bar.

"I've got to tell you. Bob is terrific." I reapplied some lipstick.

"Yeah, isn't he?" She glanced at me while brushing her hair.

"It is so great to meet a guy who's smart and funny and has an emotional age beyond, like, eight." I closed up my lipstick.

"You know what else? He's unbelievable in bed." She turned to me while I fixed my hair.

"Wow. My brother never even told me when he lost his virginity." I chuckled.

"Huh. That's nice." She smiled at me. We finally got a table and ordered dinner.

"Something went wrong with Underdog, and they couldn't get him head to inflate." Angela wrapped her arms around Bob's shoulders, sliding her hand under his shirt. I looked over at Joey and chuckled a little. "So, anyway, um...his head is, like, flopping down Broadway, right?" We chuckled. "And I'm just thinking...how inappropriate this is. Uh...I've got something in my eye. Joey, could we check it in the light?" I smiled at him sarcastically. We came over to the side.

"Okay, open your eye wide." He tried to put his hands on my face, but I stopped him.

"Were we at the same table?" I asked him. "It's like cocktails in Appalachia."

"Come on. They're close." He shrugged his shoulders.

"Close? She's got her tongue in his ear." I groaned in disgust.

"Like you've never gotten a little rambunctious with Chandler before?" He asked.

"This is sick, Joey. It's disgusting. It's...It's..." I saw the look on his face. "...not really true, is it?"

"Who's to say what's true? I mean—" He tried to explain.

"Joey, what were you thinking?" I asked him.

"Alright, look, I'm not proud of this, okay? Well, maybe I am just a little." I let out a sound of disgust and smacked his shoulder.

"I cancelled three dates tonight so you and I could watch movies and get a bunch of snacks and takeout. I'm out of here." I used my crutches and walked away from him.

"Wait. Wait. Wait." He got in front of me. "You like him. I want her." He whispered into my ear.

"No. I don't like him. I like someone else. Here's...$40 for my drink and meal. Keep the change." I pushed the bills into his hands before walking away. I was at my place with boxes of Chinese food lying around the coffee table while I rewatched Dirty Dancing.

"Can I come in?" Someone asked as they came into my apartment. I didn't need to look back to know that it was Joey.

"Sure." I wrapped the blanket closer around me. He came over and sat down next to me.

"Watching your favorite movie again?" He glanced over at me. It kind of made me happy and sad at the same time that he knew my favorite movie.

"We could watch Die Hard if you want to. I always keep a copy on hand." I was about to stand up.

"No, no, that's okay. I like Dirty Dancing because you like it." He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me into him.

"I'm sorry about tonight. I shouldn't have gotten so mad at you." It was like he had me under a spell where I would just fall for him and forgive him instantly.

"You had every right and reason to be mad. I should have at least told you the truth." He kissed the side of my head.

"Joey, you really cared for her." I tilted my head back to look up at him.

"But some things and people are just far more important. Like you." He smiled down at me. "So what did you get?" He nodded towards the food.

"All of our favorites." I handed him a random box and pair of chopsticks. Our night ended just the way we had planned. With each other, movies, and takeout.
