TWENTY

"Let her know I like her? What are you, insane?"
----------
"I can't believe you would actually say that." Chandler closed the refrigerator door. "I would much rather be Mr. Peanut than Mr. Salty."
"No way! Mr. Salty is a sailor, alright?" Joey finished spreading the cream cheese on his bagel so he put down the knife. "He's got to be, like, the toughest snack there is." He argued.
"I don't know. You don't want to mess with cornnuts. They're crazy." Ross chuckled.
"Guys, you got to come see this." We turned around to see Monica by the window. "There's some creep out there with a telescope." Everyone gasped in shock as we ran to see for ourselves.
"He's looking right at us. That is so sick." I scrunched up my nose in disgust.
"I feel so violated...and not in a good way." Chandler added.
"Why do people do that?" Phoebe exclaimed. We all groaned and turned around. "Oh, look! Ugly naked guy got gravity boots!" She called us back over. We went back to the window to see. Later, we were at Central Perk.
"I am telling you, years from now, children will study it as one of the greatest first dates of all time." He looked at each one of us. "It was unbelievable. We could totally be ourselves. We didn't play any games."
"So have you called her yet?" Monica questioned him.
"Let her know I like her? What are you. insane?" He quickly shot back. "It's the next day. How needy do I want to seem?" He replied. "Am I right? Am I right?" He glanced between the guys.
"Let her dangle for a little bit." Joey pat Chandler's leg.
"Yeah, totally." Ross nodded his head and took a sip of his coffee. Phoebe, Monica, and I scoffed.
"I can't believe my parents are actually pressuring me to find one of you guys." Monica crossed her arms over her chest.
"Come on. Just do it." Phoebe stood up and grabbed the phone from the counter. "Stop being so testosteroney." She handed it to him.
"Which, by the way, is the real San Francisco treat." Chandler glanced back at the guys before dialing the number. He put the phone against his ear for a second before turning it off. "I got her machine." He held his hands up.
"Her answering machine?" Joey looked at him.
"No, her leaf blower picked up." Chandler replied sarcastically.
"So, um...why didn't you say anything?" Phoebe played with the end of the antenna.
"Oh, no, no, no." Chandler shook his finger. "Last time I left a spontaneous message, I ended up using the phrase 'yes indeedy–o'." We laughed in response.
"Look, look, it's Rachel and Barry." Monica exclaimed. "Don't everybody look at once." We all watched them from our peripheral vision.
"Okay, okay, what's going on?" Ross asked.
"They're just talking." Phoebe answered with a nod.
"Does he look upset? Do he look like he was just told to shove anything?" Ross scratched his temple area on his forehead.
"No, no. Actually, he's smiling, and...oh my God! Don't do that!" Phoebe exclaimed.
"What? What? What?" Ross repeated in question.
"That man across the street just kicked a pigeon." She replied, making all of us sigh. Just then, Rachel walked in.
"Basically, that's how a bill becomes a law." Chandler pretended to be talking.
"Oh." We all held out the word and nodded our heads to make it seem like we were actually discussing something rather than spying on Rach and Barry. Then we greeted Rachel.
"How'd it go?" I rubbed her arm.
"It was...it was actually really great." She smiled. "He took me to lunch at the tea room. I ordered that chicken where you poke it and all the butter squirts out."
"Not a good day for birds." Phoebe said, referring to the pigeon.
"Then we took a walk to Bendel's. I told him not to, but he got me a bottle of Chanel." She pulled out the perfume bottle from the bag.
"Oh, that's nice. Was that before or after you told him to stop calling you, stop sending you flowers, and to generally leave you alone?" Ross came over to us.
"Right." Rachel nodded her head slowly. "Well, we never actually got to that. It was just so nice to see him again, you know? It was comfortable, and it was familiar. It was just really nice." She shrugged her shoulders.
"That's, that's nice twice." Ross stuffed his hands into his pockets.
"W–What's going on, Rachel? Isn't this the same Barry you left at the altar?" Monica reminded.
"Duh. Where have you been?" Joey leaned back against the armrest.
"Yeah, but it was different with him today. He wasn't like...'orthodontist guy', you know? I mean, we–we had fun. Is there anything wrong with that?" She cringed a little.
"Yes!" Chandler exclaimed when Ross hit his back suddenly. Rachel gave him a questioning look as to ask 'why?'. "I have my reasons."
"How about the fact that he's engaged to another woman who just happens to be your ex–best friend?" Monica suggested.
"Alright, alright, alright! I know it's stupid. I'll go see him this afternoon and end it with him." She finally gave in. Later that night, Chandler was busy waiting for a call back while the rest of us were playing boardgames.
"Can I use your phone?" Chandler walked into Monica's apartment with the phone from his apartment in his hands.
"Sure. But for future reference, that thing in your hand can also be used as a phone." Monica handed her phone to him.
"Alright." He dialed a number and held Monica's phone up to his ear. Then, the other phone started to ring. "Yes, it's working." He put her phone down on the dining table. "Why isn't she calling me back?" He asked rhetorically.
"Maybe she never got your message." Joey shrugged his shoulders.
"Call her machine. If she has a lot of beeps, that means she didn't get her messages yet." Phoebe advised my brother.
"You don't think that makes me seem a little..." He trailed off.
"Desperate? Needy? Pathetic?" Ross tried finishing for him.
"Ah, you obviously saw my personal ad." Chandler replied sarcastically before calling her number again. Then, he quickly hung up the phone.
"How many beeps?" Phoebe inquired.
"She answered." He was still in a state of slightly shock and surprise.
"This where you would use that 'hello' word we talked about." Monica glanced back at him.
"I'm not going to talk to her. She obviously got my message and is choosing not to call me." He sat down next to Monica on the couch. "Now I'm needy and snubbed. God, I miss being just needy." He crossed his arms over his chest. Rachel walked into the apartment.
"Hey." We all said at the same time. "How did it go?" Monica asked her.
"Pretty well, actually." She took off her coat. Monica and I walked over to her while she took something to eat out of the cupboard
"Rach, why is there dental floss in your hair?" I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Oh, do I?" She ran her hands through the back of her hair to find.
"Uh–huh." The two of us gave her a look.
"We ended up having sex in his chair." Rachel whispered to me and Monica.
"You had sex in his chair?" Monic exclaimed, making the others turn around to look at us.
"Say it louder, Mon. I don't think Africa heard you." I shook my head at my best friend.
"I said that a little too loudly, didn't I?" Monica chuckled nervously. Rachel and I nodded our heads at her.
"You...you had what?" Ross spoke up.
"Sex in his chair." Phoebe repeated for him, although I'm sure that's not what he was asking.
"What, uh, what were you thinking?" Ross stood up from his chair.
"I don't know." Rachel shrugged his shoulders. "We still care about each other. There's a history there." She tried to explain. "It's like you and Carol."
"No. No, no. This is nothing like me and Carol." Ross quickly shook his head.
"Please." She scoffed. "If she said to you, 'Ross, I want you on this couch, right here, right now', what would you say?" She questioned.
"If it helps, I could slide over." Chandler suggested jokingly.
"It–It–It's a totally different situation. It's apples and oranges. It's orthodontists and lesb...I got to go." Ross stopped trying. Then, the phone started to ring.
"Hello? Hello?" Chandler picked up his phone, but another phone kept ringing. Rachel picked it up and leaned next to my brother.
"Hello?" She answered the call. It ended up being Mindy who was calling her. She paced around the coffee table, so we all had to move our legs. "Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God." Phoebe quickly stood up when Rachel started to sit down.
"How's Mindy?" Chandler asked her, making me throw a pillow at him.
"She wants to see me tomorrow. She sounded really weird. I got to call Barry." She shook her head and started dialing his number. Mindy ended up picking his call, making the rest of us look at each other. The next day, I was making some breakfast when Joey ran into my apartment.
"The peeper's back. Get down." He grabbed me by my waist and pushed me to the ground. I let out a yelp because of the sudden movement. At this point, I was on my back on the ground with Joey laying on top of me.
"Do you think he's gone?" I whispered, knowing very well no one other than him could hear me.
"I don't know. Maybe we should stay like this for a while." He winked at me suggestively.
"Joseph Tribbiani, Jr.! I am not going to have sex with you, especially not when there's some guy watching us." I squinted my eyes at him. "Come on, I'm making waffles, and they're going to burn if you don't let me stand." I tried to push him off, but he was way bigger than me. Finally, he rolled off of me. Once I took the waffles out of the waffle maker, I put them into two plates.
"Have any stories of you and the girls?" He asked me while pouring syrup on his waffles. I put some berries onto his plate, much to his displeasure. Whenever the two of were alone, we'd talk about fun events that happened in our lives.
"Well, have any of us told you about camp during the 6th grade?" I asked him.
"No." He shook his head.
"Okay, the three of us were at some random camp over the summer, and I learned how to kiss." I giggled at the memory. "God, this is way too embarrassing."
"No, no, go on." Joey reached over and held my hand.
"See, it was midnight, and we happened to be bunked together with some other girl, and I came up with the idea to practice kissing since none of us had our first kiss yet." I covered my mouth to hold back my laughter.
"Were you guys wearing like a little uniform?" He questioned me, making me roll my eyes and smack his arm.
"Joey!" I exclaimed. "I didn't wear a uniform to camp. I did have to wear one when I went to bible camp." I whispered into his ear before taking the empty dishes.
"D–D–Do you have this u–u–uniform?" He stuttered out.
"Maybe." I chuckled and started washing the dishes. Later that night, Rachel came back from getting rejected by Barry once again.
"You okay?" Monica asked her as I handed them each a glass of white wine.
"Yeah." Rachel took a small sip. "You know, ever since I ran out on Barry at the wedding, I have wondered whether I made the right choice. And now I know." She smiled at us.
"Oh." The three of us pulled each other into a group hug.
"Big day." We looked behind us to see Joey smirking and nodding his head.
"Did you tell him about camp?" Rachel and Monica looked at me in shock.
"He dug it out of me." I tried to defend myself. We headed over to Central Perk when the rest of the gang met up with us.
"Alright, I'll give you this. Mr. Peanut is a better dresser." Joey said to Chandler. "I mean, he's got the monocle, the top hat." Joey listed out.
"Did you know he's gay?" Phoebe took a sip of my coffee and handed me the newspaper.
"I just want to clarify this. Are you outing Mr. Peanut?" Ross asked her monotonously.
"Chandler?" We heard someone call his name.
"Danielle. Hi." He greeted her while the rest of us turned around to look at her. "Uh, everybody, this is Danielle. Danielle, everybody." He introduced us.
"Hi." We waved at her. They had a short conversation before she left again.
"Second date. Woo–hoo! There you go." We cheered for him
"I don't know." He put his hands into his pockets and shrugged his shoulders.
"You don't know?" I raised an eyebrow at him.
"She seems very nice and everything, but that whole thing about her coming down here just to see if I was okay? I mean...how needy is that?" He explained. We all groaned.
