Chapter 33 ྿ 1970

Steve jumped over the rest of the stairway after reaching halfway. You did the same and followed behind. "Are you okay?" He asked you once you landed and you nodded to him. A police car could be heard in the background as Tony spoke up. "Cap! Y/n!" That's when you both turned to look over at him. Him and Scott were sitting in a car that was dusted with pieces of cement as Scott's face didn't look that happy.

"Sorry, Buddy, we got a problem." Tony started to say. Scott scoffed and turned his head slightly. "Yeah, we do." He replied. After they told the both of you what had happened, Steve sighed after you did and started to speak up. "Well, what are we gonna do now?" He asked. "You know what? Give me a break, Steve. I just got hit in the head with the Hulk." Tony said.

Scott scoffed again. "You said that we had one shot." He started to tell you all and you crossed your arms. "This, this was our shot. We shot it. It's shot. Six Stones or nothing. It was six stones or nothing." Scott added. "You're repeating yourself. You know that? You're repeating yourself." Tony told the man. "You're repeating yourself. You're repeating yourself." Scott repeated making you roll your eyes and face palm yourself. "Dude. Come on!" Tony replied.

Steve sighed and looked around to see if there were anyone coming but wondering why they were acting like kids fighting over something being full aware of the situation. "No. You never wanted a time heist. You weren't on board with the time heist." Scott said.

"I dropped the ball." Tony replied.

"You ruined the time heist." Scott added.

"Is that what I did?"

"Yeah."

"Guys.." you started to say as your left arm was over the front part of your body as your right elbow laid on your left hand and your right hand was where your head leaned against. "Are there any other options with the Tesseract?" Steve asked as he stood beside you. "No, no, no, there's no other options." Scott spoke out. "There's no do-overs." He added and you told him to relax but just got snippy and Steve butted it by telling him to stop. "We're not going anywhere else. We have one particle left. Each. That's it. All right. We use that, bye-bye, you're not going home." Scott mentioned.

"Yeah, well, if we don't try...." Steve started to say, getting tired of Scott's outburst. "Then no one else is going home, either." He added in a bit of a lower voice; his normal talking tone instead of a loud one he was using a minute ago. Tony placed the helmet he had in his hands down as he stepped out of the car saying I got it. He looked at both you and Steve. "There's another way to retake the Tesseract and acquire new particles. Little stroll down memory lane. Military installation, Garden State." Tony finished saying and you had a feeling you knew what they were talking about after seeing the reaction Steve had from the response. You knew the Garden State was New Jersey.

"When were they both there?" He asked Tony after sharing a look with you. "They were there at a time... I have a vaguely exact idea." Tony said and Steve made a face. "How vague?" He asked the man. "What are you talking about?" Scott asked and you glanced over at him. "Where are we going?" Scott stammered out after. "I know for a fact they were there." Tony said and you looked back over at him. "Who's they? What are we doing?" Scott asked two more questions, still confused.

"And I know how I know." Tony finished off. Steve took a breath as he looked behind him just in case. "Guys, what is it?" Scott asked again. "Looks like we're improvising." Steve stated and Tony glanced at you. "Great." Tony said. "What are we improvising?" Scott asked once more. Steve went over to the confused man and handed over the scepter. "Scott, get this back to the compound." Steve told him. "You're coming with us." Tony told you and you nodded. "Suit up." Tony told both you and Steve. "What's in New Jersey?" Scott asked them but they didn't listen.

"0-4." Tony told you both.

"0-4." You and Steve said as you both entered the digits into the device.

"Uh, 0-7." Tony added.

"0-7."

"Excuse me." Scott tried to get their attention again.

"-1-9-7-0." Tony finished. "Are you sure?" Steve asked, wanting to know if it was correct. You looked up at Tony in case too. "Cap? Captain? Steve? Sorry." Scott called out and Tony looked at him as well as you. He sighed and looked at Steve as Steve looked up at Scott. "America. Rogers. Look, if you do this and it doesn't work, you're not coming back." Scott finished saying. "Thanks for the pep talk, pissant." Tony said, referring to how Scott was pissed earlier. "You trust me?" He asked Steve and Steve looked at him. "I do." Steve told him. "Your call." Tony replied and you both looked at Steve. "Here we go." Steve said and you all teleported.

70s Rock song starts to play as a car is driving down a road heading towards the destination. A white car was speeding down the road as a woman stuck out her hand making the peace sign. "Hey, man! Make love, not war." The man who was driving said as they passed by an army base that read 'Camp Lehigh Army Base. Birthplace of Captain America.' Tony, you and Steve were disguised as you all walked down the side of the building.

"Clearly you weren't actually born here, right?" Tony asked Steve as you glanced around. "The idea of me was." Steve replied as you were slightly behind both of them as you walked. Steve tried to hide his identity the best he could. "Right, well, imagine you're S.H.I.E.L.D running a quasi-fascistic intelligence organization. Where do you hide it?" Tony stated as he looked around and you followed to where Steve was looking as he said in plain sight.

There was a bunker that two men went in and Tony took a step forward as he tapped on his glasses. It was able to track them down an elevator. Seemed as if there were another or a few levels below the bunker no one knew much about. Steve lightly touched your arm as you all started to head towards the bunker. Once you three were in the elevator, you stood in between Steve and Tony.

There was a woman in the elevator with you guys and as she was looking up at the three of you, Tony shifted forward a little to block Steve's familiar face from her sights. Your view was also blocked from her. You were told to stay by Steve since Steve won the little 'argument' they had before dressing in disguise. The woman lifted her eyebrows slightly before looking down at the papers she had in her hands.

Right as the bell rang, Tony turned around and looked at Steve before you. "Good luck on your mission, Captain. Ma'am." He said before starting to head out. "Good luck on your project, Doctor." Steve replied and you nodded at Tony as he left. Tony tapped his glasses as Steve made a little face which you caught. "You new here?" The woman asked Steve. "Not exactly." He replied before stating that you were and you raised your hand slightly as if saying hello in a way.

Tony jogged down a room that held machinery in each side; both left and right. "Come on, you bastard." He muttered softly to himself as he looked around. His glasses scanned each and every piece that he passed by. It wasn't till he found it when he stopped. "Gotcha." He muttered. He quickly grabbed a suitcase nearby and let out a breath. "Phew." He then looked over the container and placed part of his armor on to cut it open.

Once opened he sighed seeing it. "Back in the game." He said as he grabbed it and placed it in the case. As he closed it, there was a voice that called out. "Arnim, you in there?" Tony looked up to see his father. Turning the other way to leave, he stopped when the man called out to him. "The door is this way, pal." He told Tony as he held up a can of beer. "Oh, yeah." Tony said as he made his way towards the man.

"Looking for Doctor Zola, have you seen him?" Howard asked. "Yeah, Doctor Zola. No, I haven't seen a soul." Tony replied. The case then hit the chair as he was making his way down and he grabbed it quickly. "Pardon me." He added as Howard stopped near him. "Do I know you?" Howard asked. "No, sir. Uh... I'm a visitor from MIT." Tony mentioned as he showed a badge. "Oh. MIT." Howard said with a small nod. "Got a name?" He added and Tony spoke up. "Howard."

That's when Howard nodded his head. "That'll be easy to remember." He told Tony. "Howard... Potts." Tony added afterwards. "Well, I'm Howard Stark." The man told him as he lent out a hand to shake. "Hi." Tony said and just when he was about to shake the man's hand, Howard made his hand into a fist as Tony was only able to grab on Howard's index finger. "Shake that don't pull it." He told Tony as he tried to joke.

"Yeah." Tony said until he let go and slide his hand into his pants pocket. "You look a little green around the gills, there, Potts." Howard told him and Tony just brushed it off as if it was nothing. "I'm fine. Just long hours." He said. "You wanna get some air?" Howard suggested. Tony looked away slightly. "Hello, Potts." Howard said again. "Yeah." Tony replied. "That'd be swell." He added. "That way." Howard instructed. "Okay." Tony stated as he lead the way out.

"Need your briefcase?" Howard said when he saw the case Tony left behind. He handed it to him and Tony took it as he chuckled softly for forgetting it. That's when they started to walk. "You're not one of those beatniks, are you, Potts?" Howard questioned.

An ant farm was shown as a telephone could be heard ringing in the distance. "Hello?" A man answered. "Doctor Pym?" Steve said on the phone. "That would be the number that you called, yes." Pym replied. "This is Captain Stevens from shipping." Steve states. "We have a package for you." He added and you stood near Steve as you listened to the convo as you watched your surroundings as well. "Oh, bring it up." Pym told him. "That's the thing, sir, we can't." Steve mentioned. "I'm confused. I thought that was your job." Pym states.

"Well, it's just.... Sir, the box is glowing... and to be honest, some of our mail guys aren't feeling that great." Steve announced. "They didn't open it, did they?" Hank asked. "Uh, yeah, they did. You better get down here." Steve told him and Hank hanged up; running out of the office as he said "Excuse me! Out of my way!" As he ran past a room, Steve and You exited a room you both were in to make the call. Steve grabbed your hand and lead you both to the office before letting go and closing the door. "Search that way." He told you.

You both searched all over the office. Looking around he tried to hurry because of the time you both had was limited. It wasn't till he stopped when he turned and saw it. "Found it." Steve told you and you quickly came over. Reaching in, he grabbed four before safely placing them away.

Both Howard and Tony we're heading out when Tony spoke up. "So, flowers and sauerkraut. You got a big date tonight?" He asked. "Uh, my wife's expecting." Howard told him as they entered the elevator. "And, uh, too much time at the office." He added. "Congratulations" Tony told him as he was surprised for the answer he had received. "Thanks. Hold this, will ya?" Howard told Tony.

"Yeah, sure." Tony replied as he took the flowers. "How far along is she?" Tony questioned. "Uh, I don't know. She's at the point where she can't stand the sound of my chewing." Howard stated and Tony chuckled. "I guess I'll be eating dinner in the pantry again." He added. "I have a little girl." Tony said. "A girl would be nice." Howard started to say. "Less of a chance she'd turn out exactly like me." He added. "What'd be so awful about that?" Tony asked. "Let's just say that the greater good has rarely outweighed my own self-interest." Howard replied as he lightly tapped the side of Tony's arm before exiting.

You and Steve were walking down the hallway when you heard something. Touching the side of Steve's arm, he looked up. "And you've never seen these two men and woman before?" A guard could be heard saying. "No, I've got an eye for this. The three of them looked fishy." The woman that was in the elevator told him. "Can you describe them?" The guard asked her and Steve grabbed your arm, stopping a bit. "Well one of them had a hippie beard." She replied and you both looked at her; knowing she was speaking of Tony.

"Hippie. Like Bee Gees or Mungo Jerry?" The guard questioned. "Mungo Jerry?" You muttered. "Definitely Mungo Jerry." The woman replied and Steve pulled you into another room so you both wouldn't get caught. The guard picked up his radio and started to dispatch. "Yeah, this is Chesler. I need every available MP to sublevel six. We have a potential breach." He called out to see if there was a response.

While Steve waited for the men and woman to pass by, you looked around. It wasn't till you spotted a picture frame on a desk when you whispered Steve's name. He looked over and saw what you were looking at. Picking up the picture frame, he looked at it closer; wondering what his picture was doing there. He glanced back at the door when you looked at the window that was nearby. Tapping Steve's arm, he looked over to hear Peggy's voice.

"I said bring them in." Peggy spoke. "They're trying ma'am, but Braddock's unit has been stopped by lightening strikes." A man answered her and she brushed it off. "Oh, for the love of... I'll look at the weather projections." She said and the talking was indistinct. You couldn't hear much of what she was saying afterwards. Seeing the look on Steve's face, you knew that she was the woman he loved in the past before everything happened. He walked closer to the glass until the only thing that was separating them was in fact the glass window in between them.

Peggy noticed something on the files she was looking at and turned around to where the man was as she spoke. "It's not lightening strikes we're looking at." She said as she could be seen hurrying out. "Steve...." you said softly to try and get his attention. He looked over at you and even though you didn't want to break the moment he was having, you reminded him of the mission. He took a deep breath before looking down, nodding his head lightly as he tapped your arm lightly and the both of you made it out of there.

"So, where you at with names?" Tony asked Howard as they walked. "Well, if it's a boy, my wife likes the name Elmonzo." Howard replied. "Huh. Might wanna let that stew awhile. You got time." Tony mentioned and Howard agreed. "Let me ask you a question." Howard started to say as they stopped. "When your kid was born, were you nervous?" He asked his question. "Wildly." Tony quickly answers and Howard sighs.

"Yeah." Tony added. "Did you feel qualified?" Howard then asked. "Like you had any idea how to successfully operate that thing?" He added after. Tony made a little face before replying. "I literally piece it together as I went along. I thought about what my dad did." Tony said and both you and Steve were nearby a vehicle. The two of you were in his sights when Steve gave him a thumbs up. Howard sighs.

"My old man, you know he never met a problem he couldn't solve with a belt." He told Tony.

"I thought my dad was tough on me. And now, looking back on it, I just remember the good stuff." Tony mentioned. "You know? He did drop the odd pearl." Tony added.

"Yeah? Like what?" Howard asked.

"No amount of money ever bought a second of time." Tony replied.

"Smart guy."

"He did his best." Tony nodded and Howard gave a small nod in return. "I'll tell you, that kid's not even here yet and there's nothing I wouldn't do for him." Howard told Tony which made Tony think as the man walked away. That's when Steve titles his head up slightly, gesturing about the flowers in his hands and that's when Tony nearly forgot but pointed to the case he had with him and that the stone was in it.

"Good to meet you, Potts." Howard started to say as he walked back and took his flowers back. "Yeah." Tony replied. "Howard..." Tony started to say. "Everything's gonna be all right." He added with a smile before giving the man a hug and saying thank you for everything. Howard was slightly confused as to why Tony would give him a hug but didn't question it. "You've done for this country." Tony tried to clarify.

Walking to his car, Howard handed his flowers to a man named Jarvis. Tony smiled and walked away.  Howard was about to step into his vehicle when he pointed towards Tony who walked away. "Have we ever met that guy?" He asked Jarvis. "You meet a lot of people, sir." Jarvis replied and got in. "Seems very familiar. Weird beard." Howard only said and got in.
