(A/N: merry christmas! <3)
"do you know this boy you went to isolation with?" the father asked.
he was beginning to worry. he knows the name well--too well. it's impossible for them to not have figured things out from spending too much time while their faces are literally alike. if they had the chance to know each other in that isolation cabin, it's also not impossible for them to switch places.
the weird acts? weird questions? change of appearance? the shock was mixing with his exhaustion so well that he's starting to get dizzy.
out of all the camps he could've sent mark to, destiny had to play and put them in the exact same place.
if this is all true, he's glad--overwhelmingly glad that he saw his other son, finally. but his ex husband's reaction is what he's dreading for.
"dad..." the boy started. "i am the boy mark went to isolation with."
the father could only let out an almost quiet gasp in absolute surprise. both his hands found its way to his mouth completely dropping the paper down the counter. his eyes pierced through his son. "that means..." he could only whisper without even finishing his sentence.
"dad, i'm minhyung." it wasn't his plan to tell his dad yet. but well, here it is anyway.
all of a sudden, their time as father and son from before the divorce came flashing in his mind as if he could almost see it face to face. it was their only time together. 2 year-old lee minhyung on his daddy's arms, leaving him faint kisses and whispers of how much he loves him was his only last memory before leaving to fly with mark going to new york.
9 years later, he's all grown up, just like mark. he's matured, like mark. they are so alike that jaehyun didn't even notice the differences if it weren't pointed to him besides the obvious things.
he couldn't actually believe it's the one-third of his heart standing in front of him. it was almost too impossible, yet it's not. they made it happen. mark and minhyung did something that made their daddy really happy. happier than he's been in almost a decade.
he walked slowly towards his son before kneeling down his height and staring at him with tears filling his eyes. this is minhyung. and finally, he hugged his son. he's hugging his son for the second time after 9 years. this is not a dream, is it? oh how he wished to the gods that it wasn't. because it felt almost too good to be true.
but when he felt his son hugging him back, his tears fell slowly, one after another. oh this is real, alright.
he didn't think he'd meet his son first before seeing his ex husband in person. somehow, it's much better.
"oh wow, you've grown so much." he said scanning his face one more time.
"why do you keep saying that? johnny hyung said that to me too." jaehyun took a look at the tall man from behind the little boy almost giving him a judging look. he knew this and didn't tell me?
ahh whatever, minhyung is what matters. "i'm literally the clone of mark, dad. it's not that surprising that i grew up just like him." minhyung chuckled and smiled softly at his dad as they all laughed.
"but what are you doing here? how did you get here?" there were a lot of questions in jaehyun's mind at the moment that he didn't even know where to start. but then he remembered it's already far too late in the night that they both need rest.
"you know what? why don't we grab a special breakfast tomorrow before we head to the big house then we'll talk about everything, is that okay? for now, it's already late, you and i should sleep." jaehyun spoke gently waiting for mark's answer.
"can i sleep next to you, dad?" minhyung asked.
"of course, sweetheart."
"dad, why did you and papa get divorced?"
a little too straight to the point for jaehyun to hear his son ask about this. they've been talking about everything that happened to minhyung for all the years that have gone by and they laughed all morning over waffles and pancakes.
minhyung hadn't let jaehyun know about their objective of the plan yet. the only thing he said was finding out that they were twins in camp and switching places to meet each other's parents.
"you're certainly not beating around the bush, huh?" jaehyun chuckled as he ate his waffles. "well, it's a little too complicated. i don't think you're gonna get it."
"dad, seriously," minhyung deadpanned. "i'm turning 12, i do understand a lot of things in the world now."
jaehyun smirked. "sorry young man, your papa and i swore we'd never tell you."
"oh come on dad!" minhyung whined playfully bouncing on his seat. "i flew all the way from across the world for this, and i don't get a single clue? can i guess instead?"
"hmm, your choice." another smirk was plastered across his lips.
"is it because you wanted to live in different parts of the world? or because people were against the two of you? or you had a huge fight that never got fixed? see dad, i told you i know a lot of things for mature people." minhyung gave a proud smile.
then jaehyun lost his smile. his son is too smart for his age, too smart for his own good. they both are, mark and him. if this is the only time he's going to have minhyung by his side, he doesn't want it to end. at the same time, he wants mark there with him too.
he wants both of his son with him but he can't rob taeyong of a son. they both agreed to take one each and leave for the better of their lives. they didn't think their children would know and ask about the past of their family. but they were too dumb to realize they both raised such intelligent young men.
they had a great life for two years but what happened?
he can't have both of his son at once because taeyong would want one with him too. and technically, they have to abide to their own agreement that they have to stick with who they chose. which means they're gonna have to fly back to seoul and switch them back.
if they fly and switch them back, they're gonna have to start switching places from then on. mark for thanksgiving, minhyung for christmas. back and forth, their sons won't get to spend time with each other because it's their parents wishes they want to grant? is that how their lives gonna be now?
"was i correct in any of them? are you sad, daddy?" minhyung looked worried of his dad. jaehyun took a look at him and replaced his frown with a smile.
"no baby, what made you think so?"
"your smile faded. were you thinking of sending me back to seoul now?" minhyung was weary. he didn't want to cut the time of spending time with his dad. it's his first time seeing his dad again and he doesn't know what could happen next.
"honey, you know i can't keep you from your papa. he has to know what his sons are doing, he's going to be awfully worried." jaehyun spoke gently.
"so i'm gonna have to fly back to seoul and mark will have to go back here." the smile did nothing to conceal the pain from his eyes and his dad saw right through him.
he held the little boy's hand and gave him a smile. "we'll go together." his dad smile genuinely. "when he finds out what happened, we're gonna figure out a way so we can still see both of you, okay? so don't worry too much sweetheart."
he softly patted little minhyung's nose and they both smiled.
inside his room, jaehyun was panicking. his suitcase was barely packed, clothes were scattered and he looked like he hasn't showered. minhyung hasn't seen him yet so he has about a few good minutes to fix everything which he doubts he can even do.
seeing his ex husband would probably be the most terrifying since it's almost a decade since they last saw each other face to face. he doesn't get why he's going hysterical over flying back to seoul when he's the one who offered the break up in the first place.
it's been a week and a half since minhyung was caught. they've decided to fly back to seoul so they can sort things out and jaehyun tried with all his might to finish each and every schedule he has so he could fly back with minhyung.
he was exhausted for about a week, was scolded by different directors, photographers, even his manager. but now he's completely free from upcoming schedules and he's already decided to go back to seoul for his ex husband.
he sat down on the bed trying to breathe normally slowly. he stared at nowhere and started thinking of what could possibly happen when he finally sees him.
he's probably not seeing anyone else? he really doesn't know though. he only gets updates from online tabloids, articles from twitter and such. so much for being the ex husband who broke off the marriage huh?
it was times like these that he often gets back to his precious drawer to fish out his precious box of very precious memories. it's where he thinks he can somehow calm down by looking at those photos, priceless items and everything else he had before getting divorced. he's not the person to throw away little things that holds so much memories. he's the type of guy to even keep an old cinema receipt from his first date.
he looks at them whenever he needs to relieve stress but he ends up crying as soon as he pictures the memories inside his head. even so, he likes looking at them before.
he thought if he should open it again. maybe not?
but oh who was he kidding, of course he'll open it. it's been a while, after all. he stood up and went to his bottom night stand drawer to open it. it was there, a wooden box with a broken lock. broken lock? what?
he hasn't opened the drawer in a long long time and so he wondered how did the lock break? he opened the box but his husband's photo wasn't there anymore. where did it go?
he took out everything to search for that one specific and very large photo. from old receipts, to hand-written letters, to very small frames and old jewelry, he took it all out. it's usually the first thing he sees but now that he searched the entire box, he knows it's gone.
crap. he thought. it was his husband's photo. the only portrait he has of him. and it's gone?
"dad?" he heard his son from the doorway. he brought everything back in the box to quickly shove it inside the drawer and face his son. "yeah?"
"are you okay? your clothes are everywhere, dad. and you stink." minhyung playfully pinched his nose and laughed with his dad.
"i haven't showered, okay? are your things ready?" the dad asked and went back to packing.
"dad, the only thing i have that is mine is my set of underwear. i literally took mark's bag with me from camp, remember?" minhyung chuckled and sat on the bed as his dad packed. "oh right," jaehyun chuckled back. "then what did you pack?"
"the new toys you bought me and my wallet." the little boy smiled.
jaehyun smiled unconsciously as continued with whatever he did. suddenly, he felt the atmosphere change, it was getting sentimental. then minhyung spoke, "i'm gonna miss you dad."
jaehyun stopped moving to look at minhyung. "i know once i get back to seoul, i'm not gonna be seeing you again for a long time. and i won't be seeing mark again for a long time."
jaehyun moved his bag and sat with minhyung. "cheer up, bud. you'll see me again soon, hm? we'll be spending some holidays together."
"it just sucks, dad. why is your set up with papa like this? i won't get to spend time with you and him at the same time, in the same place. even my twin is going to be far away from me. i wish you talk it out with papa." minhyung had a few tears escaping his eyes and he hugged his dad.
"i'm sorry, kiddo. i'm really sorry." jaehyun whispered and kissed his son's head. once minhyung's tears had dried, he pulled out and smiled at his father.
"it's okay, dad. i love you still. let me help you pack your things, dad." minhyung offered and pulled jaehyun's hand to get him out of bed.
"alright, alright. did you call your papa already?" jaehyun asked. minhyung smiled playfully and turned his head to his dad in a slow manner.
"minhyung..." jaehyun said with a warning tone.
"i just planned to surprise them. please, dad? mark would be so happy to see us but we need to see his legit, and i mean legit, reaction." jaehyun looked around trying to think. maybe it wouldn't be so bad?
"alright. go ask john if he's ready. i'm gonna finish packing and shower. you go eat the breakfast i made you. then we'll go, okay?"
"aye aye, dad!"
jaehyun chucked at his son and went back to packing.
