. o n e .
sunday morning, children were running around. 11-year-old mark lee stepped down his car wearing his complete uniform of his desire topped with a long coat. it's getting pretty hot where he is right now and so he decided to take it off and let his bodyguard take it. he looked around with a huge grin. he was beyond excited.
this is incredible. he thought. it was his first camp out without his dad, and he's actually meeting a lot of children his age here.
being in an all-boys camp for the very first time gave him adrenaline rush. he never got the chance to go somewhere without his dad or bodyguard perhaps. and now, he has the chance to make a lot of friends for the first time.
being the son of a famous actor sure gave him privilege on a lot of things except for the fact that his father gets strict with friends. his dad didn't want fake friends who use his son for money.
"now mark," his bodyguard spoke from behind. "there's not gonna be any bodyguards here. you're gonna be on your own, you're gonna make friends but i'm not gonna be here for you. you sure you can handle that?"
"johnny, i told you i'm going to be okay. you and dad don't need to worry about me, i'm a big boy now." he sent a smile to his lovable bodyguard.
"alright, if you say so. now you remember, if you ever change your mind and you want me to come here to get you, i'm only a phone call away." the boy nodded. mark wasn't sure if he saw it right but his bodyguard's eyes were starting to water. the boy sighed and tugged on the man's hand. "don't cry, johnny. i know you want to hug me, come on."
mark slightly pulled his bodyguard down and gave the biggest embrace. he hugged on him so tight as if it was going to be the last. "send my hugs to dad, okay?" he says with the cutest smile.
"mark lee?"
his name spoken by a microphone suddenly interrupted his time with his bodyguard. he looked over to where the sound came from and it was the counselor who spoke his name. "that's me!" he raised his hand.
"petunia!" his cabin name was mentioned and he already knew where he should be going.
his bags were unloaded from the car and the helpers already carried them going into his cabin. he took a look at johnny one more time before the man gave him a kiss on the forehead. "have fun, little prince." his bodyguard said.
"i will, johnny. see you in 3 weeks." the boy said as he waved at his bodyguard.
johnny soon entered the car and the car drove off, leaving the little boy mark. he turned around to see the rest of the place and he sighed in so much happiness. i can't wait to make friends. he says inside his head.
a lot of kids were running around, some were walking with staff people trying to find their cabins. it seemed like some boys already made friends on their first day. he's going to be here for the next 3 weeks, that equaled to around 20 days of camp. he's not gonna be seeing his trusted bodyguard and especially his dad for that long. he was a bit sad but at the same time excited.
i hope they like me. he sighed once more before grabbing the last bag left. he followed where the staff were leading him to and was more than excited to make friends with his cabinmates.
when he entered the room, there were 6 kids setting up their own things. "hi." he said and the rest of the kids inside the room turned to look at him.
"hi!" they all said in unison. they looked excited to meet him as well. "you're mark lee? you can set up here. this is going to be your bed, we hope that's okay with you." one friend said.
"i'm haechan, by the way." the boy introduced himself, and the rest followed. "half of us are chinese and half are korean." he explained.
"i'm xiao dejun, this is my friend renjun and chenle. we're the chinese ones." said the good-looking boy. from mark's perspective, his face is looking sharp but he was handsome. "these two is jaemin and jisung."
mark started setting up his stuff after the introductions. he started with his clothes and putting them in the closet. the beds weren't deck beds so he didn't have to worry about being up in the middle of the night and making movements on the bed that might wake up the one on the bottom bed or top bed. since mark tends to wake up at night to use to bathroom, it wasn't going to be a hustle for him.
"i'm surprised no one in this place have crowded you." haechan said from the bed beside him.
mark stopped unpacking and turned to look at the small boy. "what do you mean?"
"you're the son of jeffrey right? the famous actor?" renjun says from the other bed beside his. suddenly, mark completely stops and frown a little. "how did you know that?"
"well duh, it's not really a secret, is it? my mom talks about him a lot, you're dad is gorgeous you know." xiaojun says from the bed across to him. "why do you look so worried? do you not want anyone knowing you're the son of jeffrey?" asks renjun.
"kinda. i mean, dad has been so protective over me, he's kinda strict when it comes to my friends." he answered.
somehow, mark's words made the rest of them look sympathetic. he must not have a lot of friends. haechan thought. "it's okay. we'll be your friends from now on! we're going to have so much fun here!"
the bell rings. it's time for their meal. they decided to halt their unpacking and all went for the dining hall. he hoped, no one would crowd him like what haechan said. but it surprised him to see there was also someone being crowded from another side of the hall.
at least it's not me being crowded. thank god. he thought.
the next day, they were tasked to go trekking over the hills with the rest of his batch--that means kids around his age. he put on his waterproof hiking shoes and got ready with the rets of his new found friends. suddenly, a staff entered their cabin. "are you boys ready?"
the rest of the boys yelled yes and he stood up along with them. "okay, roll call then we'll go." he put out his clipboard with their names on it and started calling them one by one.
"haechan?"
"here!" haechan grinned adorably with a matching raise of hand. "oh haechan, your twin told me to tell you that your hike jacket is with him. you go get it later in his cabin, okay?" and the boy nodded cutely.
"you have a twin?" they asked shocked. and haechan only replied with "hehe." and a cute smile.
"and lastly, mark lee?"
"i'm here!" mark says with a smile. the staff took a look at him briefly and immediately furrowed his eyebrows. mark tilted his head. "is there a problem, sir?" he asks politely.
"d-didn't i just... see you from the other cabin? ahh, i must be seeing things. okay you are ready to go, fall in line behind the firethorn boys." mark shrugged his shoulders and grabbed his jacket before following the rest of the boys outside.
once they made it to the line, mark started looking around. a few other kids started recognizing him and some already started talking to him bit by bit.
some even said weird things like, "hey did you change clothes?"
"what happened to your hair?"
"where's your brother?"
alright, first and foremost, he doesn't have a brother so the kids were really weird to him. but he didn't get to answer every kid that came up to him because they started marching with the counselor going further into the woods.
he stuck close to his new cabinmates or what he call his friends. he looked behind him and he saw haechan talking to some other kid who looked exactly like him.
"is that haechan's twin?" he asked jaemin beside him. "oh yeah. they asked to be in separate cabins because their mom said they needed to learn how to not be dependent in each other."
he wondered how jaemin knew all that but then he remembered they grew up together in korea. hmm, how's it like to grow up with someone beside me? like a friend? or a brother? he thought out of the blue. and then he was partly sad again.
he just clung his arm to jaemin as they stroll up the hills.
suddenly, he heard a voice not far from him. he was yelling and it was getting closer to him. they all spread out already as their trekking stopped in an area with a nice view of the lake.
and then he heard that voice again. he tried not to mind it but he was shocked when a boy pulled his arm to make him look and it was a boy he's never seen before.
"why are you ignoring me? i've been calling you." the boy said. mark only furrowed his eyebrows and tilted his head to the side to try and remember who the kid was. "where's my hat, hyung? i told you to hold it for a while."
"uhh what?" only mark could say.
but then the kid was weirded out of him as well. he looked at him up and down before saying, "where did you have time to change your clothes? and what happened to your hair?"
and mark heard it again. it was the second time kids have been telling him that. but then he took another scan of the boys face and it resembled a person he can't quite put his finger on.
"mark, who's he?" his cabinmates started walking up to him as xiaojun asked.
"mark?" the boy asked with a baffled face. he remembered that wasn't the name of his brother.
"sungchan-ah!"
all of a sudden, a boy's yell made them look from behind. sungchan? mark thought confused. but when he looked at the boy who called sungchan, he was bewildered. because that boy looks exactly like him.
